Azaleas (Rhododendron simsii) are popular ornamental woody plants known for their bright colors; however, very limited studies have been reported on the process of flower petal pigmentation. In this study, we found significant differences in the anthocyanin contents of petals from different colored azaleas, and the results of quantitative real-time PCR indicated that the R2R3 MYB genes, RsMYB12, RsMYB90, and RsMYB123, showed significant expression changes during the petal coloration in azalea petals; therefore, we hypothesized that RsMYB12, RsMYB90, and RsMYB123 might involve in the coloring process of azalea petals by regulating anthocyanin synthesis. This work provides insights into the underlying mechanisms of petal pigmentation in R.

December 2024

Laboratory of Occupational Protection and Ergonomics, National Institute of Occupational Health and Poison Control, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Beijing 100050, China.

To explore the occupational contact characteristics of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) among key occupational groups in China, assess the impact of occupational factors on the occurrence of WMSDs, and propose corresponding preventive strategies. Between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2023, a cross-sectional epidemiological survey method was employed to retrospectively investigate the occurrence of WMSDs and related occupational factors. Valid questionnaire data from 88609 on-the-job workers in 441 enterprises across 29 industries or job types in seven regions of China were collected, and the relationship between WMSDs and various occupational factors was discussed using multifactorial logistic regression analysis.

The adhesion of marine organisms to marine facilities negatively impacts human productivity. This phenomenon, known as marine fouling, constitutes a serious issue in the marine equipment industry. It increases resistance for ships and their structures, which, in turn, raises fuel consumption and reduces ship speed.

Introduction: The theoretical model of smartphone addiction highlights the role of emotional factors in fostering addictive behaviors. However, most research has focused on long-term emotional states and pathologies, often overlooking the immediate effects of daily emotional fluctuations on smartphone usage and their mechanisms.

Methods: Our study employed an online survey and a moderated parallel mediation model to explore how daily emotional experiences influence smartphone addiction among college students.

In this work, a switchable synthesis of β-ketosulfone and α-chloroketone through a radical difunctionalization of alkenes is reported. The transformation works well under iron peroxo species/photoredox dual catalysis and an open-flask atmosphere, and the reaction is highlighted with good yields and a broad reaction scope. Mechanism studies show that the reaction is initiated by a formal [4 + 2] cyclization of the sulfonyl radical in a regioselective manner.

This paper describes a ferric nitrene/photoredox dual-catalyzed anti-Markovnikov ring-opening of epoxides under neutral conditions for providing α-substituted acetophenones. A DFT-based calculation supported the reaction regioselectivity. The catalytic system could also be applied to the formation of C-O and C-N bonds nucleophilic functionalization of benzylic C-H bonds.

Land reclamation from the sea is a common practice to create territorial space and accommodate urbanisation in coastal cities. However, previous studies did not adequately examine the changes in ecosystem service values, the spatial transformation of the ecological network and the ecological resilience at an urban scale in the context of land reclamation. This study uses Macao SAR, a fully urbanised city with two-thirds of its land reclaimed from the sea, as a case study.

Constructing Dynamic Macropores in Thermo-Responsive Hydrogel Actuator for Large-Deformable Gripper.

December 2024

Eye Center, Affiliated Second Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, 310027, China.

Poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAm)-based smart hydrogels are widely employed in emerging applications such as drug delivery and tissue engineering, because their lower critical solution temperature (LCST) is close to physiological conditions. However, the dense chain collapse during the thermo-responsive phase transition restricts water diffusion, resulting in limited volumetric change. Here, a pure PNIPAm hydrogel that achieves a large-scale volume transition by incorporating PNIPAm microgels, is presented.

December 2024

Key Laboratory for Green Pharmaceutical Technologies and Related Equipment of Ministry of Education, College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Zhejiang University of Technology, Hangzhou 310014, P. R. China.

A method was found to construct sulfur-containing five- and six-membered heterocyclic alkyl sulfonyl compounds by using visible light and free radicals activated and/or generated by EDA complexes/homolytic cleavage as initiators to stimulate the relay reaction of alkynes/alkynones. This method puts forward a new strategy to initiate alkyl sulfonation of alkynes/alkynones with only a catalytic amount of the initiator. This strategy of generating the initiator by EDA complex activation/homolytic cleavage provides a new idea for the following substances that must be excited.

Type VI secretion system 2 (T6SS2) of Vibrio parahaemolyticus is required for cell adhesion and autophagy in macrophages; however, other phenotypes conferred by this T6SS have not been thoroughly investigated. We deleted TssL2, a key component of T6SS2 assembly, to explore the role of the T6SS2 in environmental adaptation and virulence. TssL2 deletion reduced Hcp2 secretion, suggesting that TssL2 played an important role in activity of functional T6SS2.

Introduction: The global burden of cancer is escalating, with Asia accounting for over half of cancer-related deaths worldwide. As cancer often diminishes patients' quality of life and sense of dignity, dignity-related interventions have gained prominence in palliative care for patients with cancer. However, a more in-depth exploration of the involvement of families, as the fundamental social units in Confucian Asian cultures, and cultural considerations is currently lacking.

Electronic address:

Autophagy, metabolism, and associated signaling pathways play critical roles in bacterial survival within mammalian cells and influence the immunopathogenesis of infections. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are important host cells during Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection, yet how autophagy, metabolism, and related pathways are modulated in MSCs infected with the virulent H37Rv or the attenuated H37Ra strain of Mtb remains poorly understood. In this study, we utilized RNA-Seq screening, qRT-PCR, and Western Blotting to investigate the differences in these processes between H37Rv and H37Ra infections.
