Department of Psychiatry, Affiliated Mental Health Center & Hangzhou Seventh People's Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, 310013 Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China.

Background: Significant individual differences exist in the insight of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and the clinical characteristics of OCD patients with varying levels of insight are not entirely uniform. This study aims to investigate disparities in disease severity, anxiety, and depression status among OCD patients with differing levels of insight, with the goal of generating novel treatment strategies for OCD.

Methods: A total of 114 patients diagnosed with OCD were recruited from the Department of Psychology at Affiliated Mental Health Center & Hangzhou Seventh People's Hospital to participate in this research.

Background: Over the past several decades, more research focuses have been made on the inflammation/immune hypothesis of schizophrenia. Building upon synaptic plasticity hypothesis, inflammation may contribute the underlying pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Yet, pinpointing the specific inflammatory agents responsible for schizophrenia remains a complex challenge, mainly due to medication and metabolic status.

How well do neural signatures of resting-state EEG detect consciousness? A large-scale clinical study.

Hum Brain Mapp

March 2024

Department of Neurobiology and Department of Neurology, First Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China.

The assessment of consciousness states, especially distinguishing minimally conscious states (MCS) from unresponsive wakefulness states (UWS), constitutes a pivotal role in clinical therapies. Despite that numerous neural signatures of consciousness have been proposed, the effectiveness and reliability of such signatures for clinical consciousness assessment still remains an intense debate. Through a comprehensive review of the literature, inconsistent findings are observed about the effectiveness of diverse neural signatures.

Efficacy and safety of non-invasive brain stimulation in combination with antidepressants in adolescents with depression: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Front Psychiatry

February 2024

Department of Psychiatry, Affiliated Mental Health Center & Hangzhou Seventh People's Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China.

Objective: Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) is beneficial to adult patients with depression, but its safety and efficacy in combination with antidepressants in children and adolescents with depression are not clear. We conducted a preliminary meta-analysis to objectively evaluate its clinical effect and provide information for future research and clinical practice.

Methods: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Web of Science were searched systematically to find clinical trials published in English before April 11, 2023.

Gestational diabetes and risk of perinatal depression in low- and middle-income countries: a meta-analysis.

Front Psychiatry

February 2024

Affiliated Mental Health Center & Hangzhou Seventh People's Hospital and School of Brain Science and Brain Medicine, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Hangzhou, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study looks at how gestational diabetes (GDM) can lead to depression in women who are pregnant, especially in low- and middle-income countries.
  • Researchers found that women with GDM are almost twice as likely to experience depression during pregnancy compared to those without GDM.
  • The study shows that understanding GDM's effects on mental health can help create better ways to prevent depression in pregnant women.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the combined effects of alcohol dependence and obesity on the brain's white matter microstructure, using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI).
  • It included 60 alcohol-dependent inpatients and 65 control subjects to compare their white matter measurements.
  • Findings indicate that while obesity alone didn't show significant differences in DTI measures between groups, alcohol-dependent individuals who were overweight/obese exhibited notable reductions in fractional anisotropy (FA) and increases in radial diffusivity (RD), suggesting these factors interact to affect brain structure.

Fear-related disorders (for example, phobias and anxiety) cause a substantial public health problem. To date, studies of the neural basis of fear have mostly focused on the amygdala. Here we identify a molecularly defined amygdala-independent tetra-synaptic pathway for olfaction-evoked innate fear and anxiety in male mice.

Mobile cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia: analysis of factors affecting treatment prognosis.

Sci Rep

February 2024

Affiliated Mental Health Center & Hangzhou Seventh People's Hospital, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China.

This study aims to explore the factors that affect the prognosis of patients with insomnia who are treated with mobile cognitive behavioral therapy. Patients with insomnia who visited the sleep disorders clinic were selected and completed mobile Cognitive behavioral therapy. Patients completed at least three evaluations (including baseline, monthly evaluations thereafter, and a final evaluation at the end of one year) and responded well to treatment within one year of follow-up.

Prefrontal cortical dopamine deficit may cause impaired glucose metabolism in schizophrenia.

Transl Psychiatry

February 2024

National Clinical Research Center for Mental Disorders, and Department of Psychiatry, The Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, Changsha, 410011, Hunan, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Dopamine plays a significant role in glucose regulation, and high fasting blood glucose levels are positively linked to negative symptoms in first-episode schizophrenia patients.
  • Intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) targeting the prefrontal cortex can improve both glucose metabolism and negative symptoms in these patients.
  • In animal studies, inhibiting dopamine projections in specific brain areas resulted in glucose intolerance, corroborating the hypothesis that dopamine deficits may contribute to glucose metabolism issues in schizophrenia.

Aim: Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are among the most important antidepressants. However, there is limited research on predicting the occurrence of treatment-resistant depression (TRD) after 5 years. Examining the predictive effect of TRD occurrence using resting-state fMRI in patients initiating SSRIs treatment at the onset of major depressive disorder (MDD) could potentially enhance TRD management.

Background: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental illness that has multiple biological, psychological, and sociological factors. The aim of this study was to investigate childhood traumatic experiences, parenting style, and family adaptive behaviors in patients with OCD, to explore the psychosocial factors that affect its occurrence, and to analyze the correlation between these psychosocial factors and OCD symptoms to better understand its etiology.

Methods: We recruited 109 patients diagnosed with OCD (patient group) and 144 healthy controls (control group) into this study.
