Cancer cells frequently change their metabolism from aerobic glycolysis to lipid metabolism and amino acid metabolism to adapt to the malignant biological behaviours of infinite proliferation and distant metastasis. The significance of metabolic substances and patterns in tumour cell metastasis is becoming increasingly prominent. Tumour metastasis involves a series of significant steps such as the shedding of cancer cells from a primary tumour, resistance to apoptosis, and colonisation of metastatic sites.

This study was designed to investigate the biological functions of LINC00482 in prostate cancer (PCa) with bone metastasis. TCGA dataset of PCa was applied for LINC00482 expression analysis and real time PCR was used to verify the expression level of LINC00482 in PCa tissues as well as PCa bone metastatic tissues. To detect the biological functions of LINC00482 in vitro, various assays were used including CCK-8, EdU, colony formation and transwell assays.

Mitochondrial dysfunction causes the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative damage, and oxidative stress and inflammation are considered key factors causing intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD). Thus, restoring the mitochondrial dysfunction is an attractive strategy for treating IVDD. Platelet-derived extracellular vesicles (PEVs) are nanoparticles that target inflammation.

Article Synopsis
  • Platelets are blood cells generated from megakaryocytes in the bone marrow and play important roles in various bodily processes such as blood clotting, inflammation, and tumor growth.
  • Drug-loaded platelets are being explored for targeted therapies due to their enhanced targeting abilities, biocompatibility, and lower immune response compared to other treatments.
  • Recent studies suggest that platelet extracellular vesicles (PEVs) may offer even greater advantages for drug delivery, leading to better therapeutic outcomes in treating inflammatory and tumor-related diseases.

The risk of osteoporosis in breast cancer patients is higher than that in healthy populations. The fracture and death rates increase after patients are diagnosed with osteoporosis. We aimed to develop machine learning-based models to predict the risk of osteoporosis as well as the relative fracture occurrence and prognosis.

Background: Pancreatic cancer (PC) is one of the most common malignant types of cancer, with the lung being the frequent distant metastatic site. Currently, no population-based studies have been done on the risk and prognosis of pancreatic cancer with lung metastases (PCLM). As a result, we intend to create two novel nomograms to predict the risk and prognosis of PCLM.

Background: The overall survival (OS) of pancreatic cancer (PC) patients with bone metastasis (BM) is extremely low, and it is pretty hard to treat bone metastasis. However, there are currently no effective nomograms to predict the diagnosis and prognosis of pancreatic cancer with bone metastasis (PCBM). Therefore, it is of great significance to establish effective predictive models to guide clinical practice.

Department of Spine Surgery, Beijing JiShuiTan Hospital, 4th Medical College of Peking University, Xicheng District, Xinjiekou No. 31 East Street, Beijing 100035, China.

Excessive bleeding induces a high risk of death and is a leading cause of deaths that result from traffic accidents and military conflict. In this paper, we developed a novel porous chitosan-CaCO (CS-CaCO) composite material and investigated its hemostatic properties and wound healing performance. The CS-CaCO composites material was prepared via a wet-granulation method.

Background: Bladder urothelial carcinoma (BLCA) is one of the most common urinary system malignancies with a high metastasis rate. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) play an important role in the occurrence and progression of BLCA, however, its roles in bone metastasis and the prognostic stemness biomarkers have not been identified in BLCA.

Method: In order to identify the roles of CSC in the tumorigenesis, bone metastasis and prognosis of BLCA, the RNA sequencing data of patients with BLCA were retrieved from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) databases.

Novel bone repairing scaffold consisting of bone morphogenetic Protein-2 and human Beta Defensin-3.

J Biol Eng

February 2021

Department of Spine Surgery, Beijing JiShuiTan Hospital, 4th Medical College of Peking University, No.31 Xinjiekou East Street, Xicheng District, Beijing, 100035, China.

Background: Synthetic biomaterials assist in modulating the vascular response in an injured bone by serving as delivery vehicles of pro-angiogenic molecules to the site of injury or by serving as mimetic platforms which offer support to cell growth and proliferation.

Methods: This study applied natural phospholipid modified protein technologies together with low temperature three-dimensional printing technology to develop a new model of three-dimensional artificial bone scaffold for potential use in repairing body injuries. The focus was to create a porous structure (PS) scaffold of two components, Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2 and Human Beta Defensin-3 (BMP2 and hBD3), which can synchronously realize directional bone induction, angiogenesis and postoperative antibacterial effects.

Rationale: Intraspinal tophaceous gout is relatively rare condition presenting with major clinical manifestations, such as spinal cord or nerve roots compressions (radiculopathy). It is usually difficult to differentiate intraspinal tophaceous gout, lumbar disc herniation, stenosis of spinal canal, ossification of ligamentum flavum, and other degenerative spinal disorders from each other.

Patient Concerns: A 64-year-old man was admitted with a history of progressive low back pain for 11 months.
