Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the long-term gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms and sleep quality in adolescents after COVID-19 infection.
  • The research involved an online survey conducted in Xiaoshan, China, revealing a 11.86% increase in GI symptoms and a 10.9% decrease in sleep quality among those infected.
  • It found that while GI symptoms and sleep quality started to improve within the first month post-infection, a significant relationship between the severity of GI issues and poor sleep was observed, with factors like gender, age, and education impacting these long-term effects.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between blood metabolites and five common gastrointestinal tumors (liver, colorectal, esophageal, gastric, and pancreatic cancer) using a Mendelian randomization approach.
  • It analyzed data from 137 blood metabolites based on three large genome-wide association studies, involving nearly 148,000 participants of European descent, finding isovalerylcarnitine as a potential causal mediator specifically for liver cancer.
  • The study highlights isovalerylcarnitine as a promising target for drug interventions in liver cancer prevention, while also addressing potential side effects through phenome-wide MR analysis.

Prostate cancer (PCa) affects males of all racial and ethnic groups, and leads to higher rates of mortality in those belonging to a lower socioeconomic status due to the late detection of the disease. PCa affects middle‑aged males between the ages of 45 and 60 years, and is the highest cause of cancer‑associated mortality in Western countries. As the most abundant and common mRNA modification in higher eukaryotes, N‑methyladenosine (mA) is widely distributed in mammalian cells and influences various aspects of mRNA metabolism.

Natural deep eutectic solvents (NaDESs) are environmentally friendly and efficient for the componential extraction of traditional Chinese medicine compared to conventional organic solvents. In this study, NaDES was screened and employed to extract Danshen-Gegen (DG), and the extraction process was optimised by response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural networks (ANN) model. Besides, the security of extracts of DG were evaluated in PC12 cells.

The degeneration of intervertebral discs is strongly associated with the occurrence of pyroptosis in nucleus pulposus (NP) cells. This pyroptosis is characterized by abnormal metabolism of fatty acids in the degenerative pathological state, which is further exacerbated by the inflammatory microenvironment and degradation of the extracellular matrix. In order to address this issue, we have developed a fibrin hydrogel complex (FG@PEV).

Background: There is limited evidence suggesting that osteoporosis might exacerbate depressive symptoms, while more studies demonstrate that depression negatively affects bone density and increases fracture risk.

Aims: To explore the relationship between major depressive disorder (MDD) and fracture risk.

Methods: We conducted a nested case-control analysis (32 670 patients with fracture and 397 017 individuals without fracture) and a matched cohort analysis (16 496 patients with MDD and 435 492 individuals without MDD) in the same prospective UK Biobank data set.

Electronic address:

Plant-derived extracellular vesicles (PDEV) constitute nanoscale entities comprising lipids, proteins, nucleic acids and various components enveloped by the lipid bilayers of plant cells. These vesicles play a crucial role in facilitating substance and information transfer not only between plant cells but also across different species. Owing to its safety, stability, and the abundance of raw materials, this substance has found extensive utilization in recent years within research endeavors aimed at treating various diseases.

Background Although favorable outcomes have been reported with radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT), the long-term efficacy remains insufficiently investigated. Purpose To evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety of US-guided percutaneous RFA in patients with SHPT undergoing dialysis and to identify possible predictors associated with treatment failure. Materials and Methods This retrospective study included consecutive patients with SHPT with at least one enlarged parathyroid gland accessible for RFA who were undergoing dialysis at seven tertiary centers from May 2013 to July 2022.

Background: Obesity and hypertension are major risk factors for cardiovascular diseases that affect millions of people worldwide. Both conditions are associated with chronic low-grade inflammation, which is mediated by adipokines such as adiponectin. Adiponectin is the most abundant adipokine that has a beneficial impact on metabolic and vascular biology, while high serum concentrations are associated with some syndromes.

The 'diabetic bone paradox' suggested that type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients would have higher areal bone mineral density (BMD) but higher fracture risk than individuals without T2D. In this study, we found that the genetically predicted T2D was associated with higher BMD and lower risk of fracture in both weighted genetic risk score (wGRS) and two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses. We also identified ten genomic loci shared between T2D and fracture, with the top signal at SNP rs4580892 in the intron of gene .

Background: Observational studies have hinted at a correlation between the gut microbiota and spinal pain (SP). However, the impact of the gut microbiota on SP remains inconclusive.

Methods: In this study, we employed a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to explore the causal relationship between the gut microbiota and SP, encompassing neck pain (NP), thoracic spine pain (TSP), low back pain (LBP), and back pain (BP).

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease characterized by the breakdown of joint cartilage and underlying bone. Macrophages are a type of white blood cell that plays a critical role in the immune system and can be found in various tissues, including joints. Research on the relationship between OA and macrophages is essential to understand the mechanisms underlying the development and progression of OA.

Quantitative differentiation of non-invasive bladder urothelial carcinoma and inverted papilloma based on CT urography.

BMC Urol

March 2024

Department of Radiology, Zhejiang Cancer Hospital, Hangzhou Institute of Medicine (HIM), Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1# Banshan East Road, Hangzhou, 310022, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the effectiveness of CT urography (CTU) indicators in distinguishing between bladder urothelial carcinoma (BUC) and inverted papilloma of the bladder (IPB).
  • A total of 103 patients' CTU data were analyzed for qualitative and quantitative indicators, leading to the development of a predictive model that helps in diagnosis.
  • Key indicators such as junction smoothness, maximum tumor diameter, tumor-wall interface, and arterial reinforcement rate were found to significantly differentiate BUC from IPB, resulting in a high diagnostic accuracy of the combined model (AUC = 0.934).

  • Motor proteins from the Kinesin superfamily are vital for brain development and have been linked to neurodevelopmental disorders.
  • A case involving a 6-year-old boy with severe epilepsy and intellectual disabilities revealed a novel genetic deletion in the KIF5C gene that affects crucial protein function.
  • The study highlights how this genetic variant disrupts normal cellular processes and reinforces the need for further understanding of KIF5C's role in neurodevelopment to improve diagnosis and treatment options.

Thyroid cancer can be classified into three different types based on the degree of differentiation: well-differentiated, poorly differentiated, and anaplastic thyroid carcinoma. Well-differentiated thyroid cancer refers to cancer cells that closely resemble normal thyroid cells, while poorly differentiated and anaplastic thyroid carcinoma are characterized by cells that have lost their resemblance to normal thyroid cells. Advanced thyroid carcinoma, regardless of its degree of differentiation, is known to have a higher likelihood of disease progression and is generally associated with a poor prognosis.
