Type 2 Diabetes and Hypertension as Risk Factors for Advanced Fibrosis in Biopsy Proven Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease.

Objectives: To identify the diagnostic criteria for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) related to liver fibrosis and to characterize patients with cryptogenic steatotic liver disease (SLD) (non-MASLD) among those previously diagnosed with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

Methods: This multicenter retrospective study included 511 patients diagnosed with NAFLD via liver biopsy, and the prevalence of MASLD was assessed based on the diagnostic criteria. Patients were divided into those who met the MASLD criteria and those who did not, and the characteristics of advanced fibrosis and associated cardiometabolic factors were evaluated.

Association of Pretreatment Albumin-bilirubin Grade With Hepatotoxicity and Efficacy in EGFR-TKIs Therapy for NSCLC.

Background/aim: The albumin-bilirubin (ALBI) grade is an assessment tool for hepatic function and prognosis in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, its significance in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with an epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor (EGFR-TKI) remains unclear. We retrospectively investigated the relationship between pre-treatment ALBI grade and hepatotoxicity and treatment efficacy in patients with NSCLC receiving EGFR-TKIs.

Japanese clinical practice guidelines for oral cancer, 2023.

The Japanese Society of Oral Oncology and Japanese Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons have jointly developed clinical practice guidelines for oral cancer (oral squamous cell carcinoma) to improve and standardize the quality of oral cancer treatment in Japan. The first, second, and third editions were published in 2009, 2013, and 2019, respectively, and the 2023 edition was recently developed. In the development of the 2023 edition, 60 clinical questions (CQs) were listed.

Severe Varicella-Zoster Virus Pneumonia in an Unvaccinated Patient With Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Case Report and Literature Review.

The global prevalence of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is increasing, resulting in an increased use of Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors. Several cases of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) pneumonia in patients with RA have been reported. However, to our knowledge, no reports have demonstrated conclusive evidence of VZV reinfection in this patient population.

[Questionnaire Survey on the Response to the Reduction of the Equivalent Dose Limit of the Crystalline Lens in the Tokai Region].

Purpose: We conducted a questionnaire survey on the measures to be taken after the reduction of the equivalent dose limit for lenses to clarify the current situation at each institution and to discuss future dose control and exposure protection for lenses.

Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted among medical institutions in the Tokai area. A total of 65 items, including personal dosimeters, protective eyewear, imaging conditions, and protective equipment, were included in the survey.

Clinical effectiveness of baricitinib and abatacept in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Aim: The objective of this study was to compare the clinical effectiveness of baricitinib and abatacept in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Methods: This study included 274 patients treated with abatacept and 241 treated with baricitinib who were followed for >52 weeks. Potential treatment selection bias was addressed by using inverse probability of treatment weighting.

A Case of COVID-19 and Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) Coinfection Resulting in MRSA Empyema.

Bacterial coinfections in patients with COVID-19 are rare; however, coinfection with  is relatively common. No detailed report of patients with COVID-19 and methicillin-resistant  (MRSA) coinfection has been documented. Herein, we present a case of a patient with COVID-19 and MRSA coinfection who developed MRSA empyema after pneumonia and bacteremia.

A Case of Recurrence of Benign Convexity Primary Intraosseous Meningioma.

Meningiomas originating within the bones of the skull are rare and have been reported as primary intraosseous meningiomas (PIOM). Moreover, PIOMs with a skull base location or malignant pathology are predisposed to recurrence; however, recurrence is quite rare among PIOMs characterized by a convexity location and benign pathology. Here, we present a case of extensive recurrence of a convex intraosseous meningioma with benign pathology.

Efficacy of intraoperative irrigation with artificial cerebrospinal fluid in chronic subdural hematoma surgery: study protocol for a multicenter randomized controlled trial.

Background: The surgical techniques for treatment of chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH), a common neurosurgical condition, have been discussed in a lot of clinical literature. However, the recurrence proportion after CSDH surgery remains high, ranging from 10 to 20%. The standard surgical procedure for CSDH involves a craniostomy to evacuate the hematoma, but irrigating the hematoma cavity during the procedure is debatable.

A questionnaire survey was conducted at each facility in the Tokai region to confirm the status of medical radiation dose control in the region.

Genetic factors alone cannot explain the pathophysiology of moyamoya disease (MMD), and environmental factors such as an immune response are thought to be involved. Oral and gut microbiomes have attracted attention as environmental factors in the pathophysiology of some vascular and autoimmune diseases. However, the relationship between MMD and these microbiomes is yet to be thoroughly investigated.

Development of machine learning models for predicting unfavorable functional outcomes from preoperative data in patients with chronic subdural hematomas.

Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) often causes neurological deterioration and is treated with hematoma evacuation. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of various machine learning models to preoperatively predict the functional outcome of patients with CSDH. Data were retrospectively collected from patients who underwent CSDH surgery at two institutions: one for internal validation and the other for external validation.

[Autoimmune hemolytic anemia following the third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine].

The development and exacerbation of autoimmune diseases following coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination have been reported; however, there are few reports of autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA). A 75-year-old woman was admitted to the emergency department 46 days after receiving her third dose of the mRNA-1273 COVID-19 vaccine because of fatigue and general weakness. Initial laboratory analyses revealed severe hemolytic anemia with positive direct and indirect Coombs test and elevation of serum indirect bilirubin and lactate dehydrogenase.

Real-world data of clazosentan in combination therapy for aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage: a multicenter retrospective cohort study.

Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) may lead to cerebral vasospasm, significantly associated with morbidity and mortality. In double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 3 studies, clazosentan reduces cerebral vasospasm-related morbidity and all-cause mortality in patients with aSAH. There are no reports about the clinical efficacy of clazosentan combination therapy with some other drugs.

A rare spontaneous breast abscess due to Mycobacterium chelonae: a case report.

Background: Mycobacterium chelonae, a nontuberculous mycobacterium, commonly causes skin, soft tissue, eye, pulmonary, catheter-related, and post-surgical infections in patients with immunosuppression or trauma. M. chelonae breast infections are rare, and most cases occur following cosmetic surgery.

Peritoneal Expression of Membrane Complement Regulators Is Decreased in Peritoneal Dialysis Patients with Infected Peritonitis.

In peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients, fungi and are considered important causative microorganisms for peritonitis with poor prognosis. Our objective was to explore expressions of membrane complement (C) regulators (CRegs) and tissue injuries in the peritoneum of patients with PD-related peritonitis, including fungal and peritonitis. In peritoneal biopsy tissues obtained at PD catheter removal, we investigated the severity of peritonitis-associated peritoneal injuries and the expression of CRegs, CD46, CD55, and CD59 against peritoneal tissues without any episode of peritonitis.

Objective: Various guidelines recommend that patients with early rheumatoid arthritis (RA) try to achieve clinical remission within 6 months, and early therapeutic intervention is important to this end.
