The Healthy Meal Program: A food insecurity screening and referral program for urban dwelling older adults.

Objective: To describe the Healthy Meal Program (HMP), a community-academic partnership that aims to address the food insecurity and social isolation in older adults living in an urban setting.

Program Implementation: Low-income older adults were screened for food insecurity and social isolation. A partnership with the food bank and a farm-based organization helped provide a weekly congregate or home-delivered meal, pilot a cooking class, and offer a mobile market selling fresh vegetables at discounted prices.

The Lived Experience of African-American Informal Caregivers of Family Members with Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias.

The purpose of this qualitative study was to describe the lived experience of African-American informal caregivers of family members with Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) in a home environment. Using a qualitative, phenomenological approach, a purposive sample of 16 African-American informal caregivers completed an in-depth interview that lasted from 30 to 60 minutes. Four themes emerged: (a) a sense of obligation, (b) an arduous journey, (c) sentinel events, and (d) faith in God.

Exploring Racial Differences in Patient Centeredness of Care (PCC) During Breast Cancer (BC) Chemotherapy Clinical Visits.

Objectives: The communication patterns between clinician and patient, described as the patient centeredness of care (PCC), may be a critically important etiology of breast cancer (BC) racial disparity. The purpose of this prospective, comparative pilot study was to qualitatively explore and code for PCC during the clinical visit of women undergoing BC chemotherapy and compare by race.

Methods: Age-matched Black and White women were recruited.

Correlation of the experience of peer relational aggression victimization and depression among African American adolescent females.

Problem: This study aimed to examine if the experience of peer relational aggression victimization (PRAV) can be linked to feelings of depression in the African American adolescent female population.

Methods: The sample included 241 college-age African American adolescent females assessed for PRAV and depression. Statistical analysis was carried out to determine the relationship between the variables.

From idea to graduation: the evolution of the first PhD program in a HBCU.

Hampton University has the distinction of being the first Historically Black College or University (HBCU) to fully implement a PhD in Nursing program. This was history making for our campus as the charter was changed to accommodate doctoral education. The PhD in Physics was the first doctoral program on campus, and Nursing was one of three doctoral programs that followed.

Nursing accreditation: what's a librarian got to do with it?

Nursing education accreditation visits are similar to JCAHO accreditation visits. Both types of accreditation are offered to ensure quality programs and services. The author, a librarian, describes the role of the nursing library in helping the Hampton University School of Nursing to achieve full accreditation from the two national nursing accreditation bodies.
