Introduction: The United States Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommend COVID-19 vaccines for all immunocompromised individuals. Certain disease groups are at increased risk of comorbidity and death for which disease-specific recommendations should be considered. The objective of the Delphi panel of experts was to summarize expert consensus on COVID-19 vaccinations for patients with rheumatologic disease, renal disease, hematologic malignancy and solid organ transplant (SOT) in the US.

Background: In response to the staggering global burden of conditions requiring emergency and essential surgery, the development of international surgical system strengthening (SSS) is fundamental to achieving universal, timely, quality, and affordable surgical care. Opportunity exists in identifying optimal collaborative processes that both promote global surgery research and SSS, and include medical students. This study explores an education model to engage students in academic global surgery and SSS via institutional support for longitudinal research.

Background: Cardiac device procedures require tissue dissection to free existing device lead(s). Common techniques include blunt dissection, standard electrocautery, and low-temperature electrocautery (PlasmaBlade, Medtronic); however, data on the type of electrosurgical tool used and the development of procedure- or lead-related adverse events are limited.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine whether standard or low-temperature electrocautery impacts the development of an adverse event.

Background: The World-wide Randomized Antibiotic Envelope Infection Prevention trial reported a 40% reduction in major cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) infections within 12 months of the procedure with the use of an antibacterial-eluting envelope (TYRX Absorbable Antibacterial Envelope, Medtronic, Mounds View, MN).

Objective: The purpose of this report was to describe the longer-term (>12 months) envelope effects on infection reduction and complications.

Methods: All trial patients who underwent CIED replacement, upgrade, revision, or initial cardiac resynchronization therapy - defibrillator implantation received standard-of-care infection prophylaxis and were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to receive the envelope or not.

Transgender reassignment surgeries have become a major topic of interest within the last decade. Although there are numerous surgical techniques for male-to-female reassignment, a physician must assess each patient's anatomy and past medical history to determine the most suitable technique. Additionally, patient preference is important.

Transgender surgeries are becoming more frequent and visual interpretation of anatomy is essential for both surgeons and patients. Since the forearm free flap phalloplasty was introduced in 1984, it has been known to provide reliable cosmetic and functional results for transitioning men compared with phalloplasty by different flaps. Surgical text descriptions were enhanced by the creation of new anatomic illustrations.

Gender reaffirmation surgery is the final step in an individual's transition to their preferred gender. A clear understanding of the anatomy pertinent to this procedure is essential by the surgeon and patient. In male-to-female transgenders, female genitalia is constructed using the individual's penile skin to form the neovaginal canal and their scrotal skin folds post orchiectomy to create the labia majora.

Ten years after the consensus meeting on disorders of sex development (DSD), genital surgery continues to raise questions and criticisms concerning its indications, its technical aspects, timing and evaluation. This standpoint details each distinct situation and its possible management in 5 main groups of DSD patients with atypical genitalia: the 46,XX DSD group (congenital adrenal hyperplasia); the heterogeneous 46,XY DSD group (gonadal dysgenesis, disorders of steroidogenesis, target tissues impairments …); gonosomic mosaicisms (45,X/46,XY patients); ovo-testicular DSD; and "non-hormonal/non chromosomal" DSD. Questions are summarized for each DSD group with the support of literature and the feed-back of several world experts.

Patient-centering approaches for the surgical oncologist: palliative care, patient navigation, and distress screening.

Surgeons can more effectively meet the public's increased expectation of patient-centered care by directing attention to pain, non-pain symptoms, including depression and anxiety, in addition to the patient's personal preferences, resources, and support needs. Patient navigation and palliative care, both pioneered by surgeons, provide complementary frameworks for the screening, assessment and intervention needed to achieve enhanced patient outcomes including adherence to care, improved quality of life and patient satisfaction.

A 15-year-old female presented to physical therapy 2 months after a traumatic injury with severe low back pain, referred unilateral leg pain below the knee, and a lumbar lateral shift. A classification-based approach, mechanical diagnosis and therapy, was utilized to identify the patient with respect to a particular subgroup, and interventions were applied according to symptomatic response to loading strategies, sustained and repeated movements. Outcome measures included the Modified Oswestry Disability Questionnaire (MODQ) and a visual analog scale (VAS) for pain rating.
