In recent decades, much work has been implemented in heart rate (HR) analysis using electrocardiographic (ECG) signals. We propose that algorithms developed to calculate HR based on detected R-peaks using ECG can be applied to seismocardiographic (SCG) signals, as they utilize common knowledge regarding heart rhythm and its underlying physiology. In this study, phenolic compounds using deep eutectic solvents (DES) were extracted from cork dust, and the biogas production potential of DES-treated cork dust samples was determined. The DES treatment was carried out using choline chloride and formic acid (1:2 M ratio) at various temperatures (90, 110 and 130 °C) and treatment times (20, 40 and 60 min) at a solid-to-solvent ratio of 1:10 g mL. The highest total phenolic content (137 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE) g dry cork dust) was achieved at 110 °C/20 min.

Water-soluble xylans useable for many potential applications can be produced based on the hydrolysis of wheat straw within a fixed bed using saturated steam to provide a xylan-rich hydrolysate low in particles and lignin enabling an effective ultrafiltration and xylan separation. Under defined conditions (180 °C, 10 bar, 35 min), a degree of solubilization of 29.6 % for straw and of 63 % for hemicellulose is achieved.

A novel approach of phenotype analysis of fermentation-based bioprocesses based on unsupervised learning (clustering) is presented. As a prior identification of phenotypes and conditional interrelations is desired to control fermentation performance, an automated learning method to output reference phenotypes (defined as vector of biomass-specific rates) was developed and the necessary computing process and parameters were assessed. For its demonstration, time series data of 90 cultivations were used which feature a broad spectrum of solventogenic and acidogenic phenotypes, while 14 clusters of phenotypic manifestations were identified.

We report on differences in the magnetite (111) surface structure when prepared under oxidizing and reducing conditions. Both preparations were done under UHV conditions at elevated temperatures, but in one case the sample was cooled down while keeping it in an oxygen atmosphere. Scanning tunneling microscopy after each of the preparations showed a different apparent morphology, which is discussed to be an electronic effect and which is reflected in the necessity of using opposite bias tunneling voltages in order to obtain good images.
