Background: The incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE; pulmonary embolism [PE] and/or deep vein thrombosis [DVT]) in Japan is increasing, but relatively small numbers of patients from Japan have been included in studies investigating rivaroxaban (a direct factor Xa inhibitor) for the treatment of VTE and preventing its recurrence.
Methods and results: An open-label, prospective, observational study (XASSENT [NCT02558465]) investigated the safety profile and effectiveness of rivaroxaban for ≤2 years in the treatment of VTE and prevention of its recurrence in Japanese clinical practice. Primary outcomes were major bleeding and symptomatic recurrent VTE.

Background: The guideline-recommended low-density lipoprotein cholesterol target level of <70 mg/dL may not be achieved with statin administration in some patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Therefore, the proprotein convertase subtilisin-kexin type 9 (PCSK9) antibody can be added to high-risk patients with ACS. Nevertheless, the optimal duration of PCSK9 antibody administration remains unclear.

Background: Several stent expansion criteria derived from the intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) evaluation have been proposed to predict future clinical outcomes, but optimal stent expansion criteria as a guide during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) are still controversial. There are no studies evaluating the utility of stent expansion criteria along with the clinical and procedural factors in predicting target lesion revascularization (TLR) after contemporary IVUS-guided PCI.
Methods: OPTIVUS-Complex PCI study (Optimal Intravascular Ultrasound Guided Complex Percutaneous Coronary Intervention) multivessel cohort was a prospective multicenter study enrolling 961 patients undergoing multivessel PCI including left anterior descending coronary artery using IVUS with an intention to meet the prespecified criteria for optimal stent expansion.

Context: We have previously reported that a specific "AGATC" haplotype in a >34 kb tight linkage disequilibrium (LD) block within ESR1 is strongly associated with cryptorchidism and hypospadias in Japanese boys.
Objective: We aimed to determine the true susceptibility factor for cryptorchidism and hypospadias linked to the "AGATC" haplotype.
Methods: We performed various molecular studies in hitherto unreported 230 Italian boys (80 with cryptorchidism and 150 with normal genitalia) and previously reported and newly recruited 415 Japanese boys (149 with cryptorchidism, 141 with hypospadias, and 125 with normal genitalia).
The relationship between the thrombotic event and prognosis in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has not yet been fully investigated in Japan. Our study aimed to investigate the clinical outcomes and risk factors for thrombosis in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 in Japan. We compared the patient characteristics and clinical outcomes among patients with thrombosis (N=55) and those without thrombosis (N=2839) by using a large-scale data of CLOT-COVID study (thrombosis and antiCoaguLatiOn Therapy in patients with COVID-19 in Japan Study: UMIN000045800).

Emergency surgery was performed to treat acute lower limb ischemia caused by heart thromboembolism and concomitant popliteal artery aneurysm. Using a near-infrared spectroscopy oximeter, regional tissue oxygen saturation (rSO) was monitored to assess the tissue perfusion pre-, intra-, and postoperatively. rSO values did not increase sufficiently following thromboembolectomy of the superficial femoral artery, but they dramatically recovered after additional popliteal-anterior tibial bypass surgery.

Aims: Although the delivery catheter system for pacemaker-lead implantation is a new alternative to the stylet system, no randomized controlled trial has addressed the difference in right ventricular (RV) lead placement accuracy to the septum between the stylet and the delivery catheter systems. This multicentre prospective randomized controlled trial aimed to prove the efficacy of the delivery catheter system for accurate delivery of RV lead to the septum.
Methods And Results: In this trial, 70 patients (mean age 78 ± 11 years; 30 men) with pacemaker indications of atrioventricular block were randomized to the delivery catheter or the stylet groups.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become a major health problem worldwide since 2020. Although the main pathophysiology of COVID-19 is a respiratory infectious disease, it could also cause cardiovascular complications, including thrombosis. Thus, anticoagulation therapy has been thought to help prevent thrombosis, leading to improved survival.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a multisystem disorder with increased mortality predominantly due to obesity-associated complications; therefore, the management of obesity has been centric to therapeutic strategies for PWS. Although a multidisciplinary team approach has been successful for this purpose during childhood, it is generally difficult to implement during adulthood because of the lack of a structured transitional care program. A more detailed understanding of the current medical conditions of adults with PWS is needed to establish this program; however, limited information is currently available on this issue in Japan.

Objective The treatment background, as well as the frequency and type of complications, in autologous (auto-) and allogeneic (allo-) hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) survivors influence the appearance of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) or sedentary behavior. We therefore assessed differences in the MVPA and sedentary behavior between auto- and allo-HSCT survivors. Methods This prospective observational study included 13 auto- and 36 allo-HSCT survivors (approximately 4 years after HSCT).

Purpose: Chemotherapy-induced neutropenia (CIN) is a dose-limiting factor for cytotoxic chemotherapy, but recently, it was suggested that CIN contributes to prolonged survival. In this study, we examined the association between severe CIN and survival and determined whether CIN affected survival in patients with extensive-stage small cell lung cancer (ES-SCLC).
Methods: The medical records from 214 patients with ES-SCLC treated with etoposide or irinotecan in combination with cisplatin (EP/IP) between 2012 and 2016 were collected and retrospectively analyzed.
