Considering the global spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), it is expected that vaccination against its causative agent, the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), will reduce the related morbidity and mortality. However, the safety of the COVID-19 vaccines and their potential and unknown side effects are a matter of concern. With the ongoing development and implementation of COVID-19 vaccination programs around the world, the side effects, safety, and effectiveness of these vaccines are gradually being reported, providing researchers with valuable information that can affect the production and utilization of the COVID-19 vaccines.

Role of SARS-COV-2 and ACE2 in the pathophysiology of peripheral vascular diseases.

Biomed Pharmacother

October 2023

Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Research Center, Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Mashhad, Iran. Electronic address:

The occurrence of a novel coronavirus known as severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), created a serious challenge worldwide. SARS-CoV-2 has high infectivity, the ability to be transmitted even during the asymptomatic phase, and relatively low virulence, which has resulted in rapid transmission. SARS-CoV-2 can invade epithelial cells, hence, many patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 have suffered from vascular diseases (VDs) in addition to pulmonary manifestations.

Front Neurosci

June 2023

Department of Neuroscience, School of Science and Advanced Technologies in Medicine, Hamadan University of Medical Sciences, Hamadan, Iran.

Neurological disorders affect the nervous system. Biochemical, structural, or electrical abnormalities in the spinal cord, brain, or other nerves lead to different symptoms, including muscle weakness, paralysis, poor coordination, seizures, loss of sensation, and pain. There are many recognized neurological diseases, like epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), multiple sclerosis (MS), stroke, autosomal recessive cerebellar ataxia 2 (ARCA2), Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON), and spinocerebellar ataxia autosomal recessive 9 (SCAR9).

Evaluation of Vitamin D Serum Levels in Pregnant Women with COVID-19 Compared with the Control Group in Pregnant Women: A Case-Control Study.

SN Compr Clin Med

May 2023

Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Fellowship of Female pelvic Floor disorders, Clinical Research Development Unit of Fatemieh Hospital, Department of Gynecology, School of Medicine, Hamadan University of Medical Sciences, Hamadan, Iran.

The findings of studies on serum 25-hydroxy-vitamin D [25(OH) D] levels in pregnant women with or without coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) were found to be controversial and inadequate. The present study was thus carried out at to fill the gap felt in this regard. In this case-control study, 63 pregnant women with singleton pregnancy who were infected by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and 62 pregnant women who were matched for gestational age and not infected by COVID-19 were examined.

Eur J Neurol

August 2023

Department of Clinical Neuroscience, Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, Sahlgrenska Academy at University of Gothenburg and Department of Neurology, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Gothenburg, Sweden.

Article Synopsis
  • A new prognostic score, SI NCAL C, was created to estimate the risk of dependency and death in patients after cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT), aiding in future targeted therapies.
  • The study used data from the International CVT Consortium, excluding patients with prior functional dependency, and employed logistic and Cox regression analyses to identify risk factors for poor outcomes.
  • Results showed the score has good predictive accuracy (C-statistics around 0.80-0.84), but further external validation is needed to confirm its effectiveness before widespread use.

Some reports emphasize that zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are detrimental to the reproductive organs of animals. As such, this research aimed at exploring the apoptotic potential of ZnO NPs on testis along with the beneficial role of Vitamins (V) A, C, and E against ZnO NP-induced damage. To this aim, a population of 54 healthy, male Wistar rats were used in this work and then assigned into nine groups of 6 rats as G1: Control 1 (Water); G2: Control 2 (Olive oil); G3: VA (1000 IU/kg), G4: VC (200 mg/kg), G5: VE (100 IU/kg), G6: ZnO NPs exposed animals (200 mg/kg); and G7, 8 and 9: ZnO NPs-exposed animals that were pre-treated with either VA, C, or E.

Article Synopsis
  • This study focused on the expression levels of specific microRNAs (miR-133a, miR-637, and miR-944) in breast cancer patients to understand their relationship with key signaling proteins PI3K and AKT.
  • Researchers examined serum and tumor samples from 40 breast cancer patients and found that miR-133a and miR-637 were generally lower in tumor tissues compared to healthy controls, while miR-944 had a unique pattern of expression.
  • The results indicated that miR-637 may serve as a more reliable diagnostic marker for breast cancer than the other two microRNAs, highlighting its potential importance in understanding and diagnosing the disease.
