Early pioneering studies by Autrum on terrestrial arthropods first revealed that the visual systems of arthropods reflected their lifestyles and habitats. Subsequent studies have examined and confirmed Autrum's hypothesis that visual adaptions are driven by predator-prey interactions and activity cycles, with rapidly moving predatory diurnal species generally possessing better temporal resolution than slower moving nocturnal species. However, few studies have compared the vision between diurnal herbivores and nocturnal predators.

Population structure and hybridisation in a population of Hawaiian feral chickens.

Chickens are believed to have inhabited the Hawaiian island of Kauai since the first human migrations around 1200AD, but numbers have peaked since the tropical storms Iniki and Iwa in the 1980s and 1990s that destroyed almost all the chicken coops on the island and released large numbers of domestic chickens into the wild. Previous studies have shown these now feral chickens are an admixed population between Red Junglefowl (RJF) and domestic chickens. Here, using genetic haplotypic data, we estimate the time of the admixture event between the feral population on the island and the RJF to 1981 (1976-1995), coinciding with the timings of storm Iwa and Iniki.

We review the current knowledge of the biodiversity of the ocean as well as the levels of decline and threat for species and habitats. The lack of understanding of the distribution of life in the ocean is identified as a significant barrier to restoring its biodiversity and health. We explore why the science of taxonomy has failed to deliver knowledge of what species are present in the ocean, how they are distributed and how they are responding to global and regional to local anthropogenic pressures.

The California Current System experiences seasonal ocean acidification and hypoxia (OAH) owing to wind-driven upwelling, but little is known about the intensity, frequency, and depth distribution of OAH in the shallow nearshore environment. Here we present observations of OAH and dissolved inorganic carbon and nutrient parameters based on monthly transects from March 2017 to September 2018 extending from the surf zone to the ~ 40 m depth contour in La Jolla, California. Biologically concerning OAH conditions were observed at depths as shallow as 10 m and as close as 700 m to the shoreline.

The recent development of small, single-amplicon-based benchtop systems for pyrosequencing has opened up a host of novel procedures for applications in forensic science. Benthic incubation chambers facilitate metabolism studies in shallow water environments. They are used to isolate the water surrounding a study organism or community so that changes in water chemistry can be quantified to characterise physiological processes such as photosynthesis, respiration, and calcification. Such field measurements capture the biological processes taking place within the benthic community while incorporating the influence of environmental variables that are often difficult to recreate in settings.

The potential impacts of sub-surface hydrocarbon plumes to deep-water column micronekton are an important consideration in a more complete understanding of ecosystem effects resulting from deep-sea oil spills. However, evaluating toxicity in these organisms presents multiple challenges, and the use of a shallow-water proxy species allows comparison and validation of experimental results. This study thus examined the suitability of the peppermint shrimp, , as an experimental proxy for ecologically important deep-sea zooplankton/micronekton in hydrocarbon toxicity assays.

The field of extracellular vesicles has been rapidly developing after it became evident that a defined subset of vesicles, called exosomes, can modulate several biological functions in distant cells and tissues. Exosomes range in a size from 40 to 160 nm in diameter, are released by majority of cells in our body, and carry molecules which reflect the cell of origin. The types of biomolecules packed, their respective purpose, and their impact on the physiological state of distinct cells and tissues should be understood to advance the using of exosomes as biomarkers of health and disease.

Quantifying recruitment of corals is important for evaluating their capacity to recover after disturbances through natural processes, yet measuring recruitment rates is challenging due to the minute size of the study organism and the complexity of benthic communities. Settlement tiles are widely used in studies of coral recruitment because they can be viewed under a microscope to enhance accuracy, but methodological choices such as the rugosity of tiles used and when and how to scan tiles for recruits post-collection may cause inconsistencies in measured recruitment rates. We deployed 2,880 tiles with matching rugosity on top and bottom surfaces to 30 sites along the Florida Reef Tract for year-long saturations during a three year study.

With respect to the tremendous deficit in surgical care plaguing developing nations, it is critical that medical outreach models be organized in such a fashion that sustainable advancements can be durably imparted beyond the duration of targeted missions. Using a didactic framework focused on empowering host neurosurgeons with an enhanced surgical skillset, a mission was launched in Managua, Nicaragua, after previous success in Kiev, Ukraine, and Lima, Peru. For thousands of years, anatomical models have served as essential tools in medical instruction. While human dissections have been the regular source of information for medical students for the last few centuries, the scarcity of bodies and the religious and social taboos of previous times made the process of acquiring human cadavers a challenge. The dissection process was dependent on the availability of fresh cadavers and thus was met with a major time constraint; with poor preservation techniques, decomposition turned the process of employing bodies for instruction into a race against time.

Aims: There is an inadequate portfolio of treatments for Gulf War Illness (GWI), a complex disease involving multiple organ systems, and early-phase clinical trials are hampered by many logistical problems. To address these challenges, the Gulf War Illness Clinical Trials and Interventions Consortium (GWICTIC) was formed with the aims of (i) creating a collaborative consortium of clinical and scientific researchers that will rapidly implement rigorous and innovative phase I and II clinical trials for GWI, (ii) perform at least four phase I or II clinical trials, (iii) provide a foundation of scalable infrastructure and management in support of the efficient and successful operation of the GWICTIC, and (iv) partner with the Boston Biorepository, Recruitment & Integrated Network for GWI and other GWI investigators to develop a common data element platform for core assessments and outcomes.

Main Methods: The GWICTIC brings together a multidisciplinary team of researchers at several institutions to provide scientific innovation, statistical and computational rigor, and logistical efficiency in the development and implementation of early-phase low-risk clinical trials for GWI.

Unfortunately, most of these data remain unpublished which limits our understanding of regional and global reproductive patterns.
