Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates the impact of circumferential resection margin (CRM) and circumferential surface (CS) involvement on survival outcomes in pancreatic head cancer patients after surgery.
  • Analysis of 102 pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) specimens revealed that R1 CRM status is linked to significantly poorer overall survival and disease-free survival compared to R0, while R0 CS showed notably better outcomes than R1.
  • The findings indicate that CRM involvement (using the 0 mm rule) is a strong predictor of survival outcomes, whereas CS involvement does not significantly influence prognosis.

Effect of biologic therapies on quality of life in severe asthma: Findings from the PRISM study.

World Allergy Organ J

September 2024

Department of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Asan Medical Center, University of Ulsan College of Medicine, Seoul, South Korea.

Background: Anti-type 2 (T2) biologic therapies (biologics) improve exacerbation rates, lung function, and asthma-related quality of life (QoL) in patients with severe T2 asthma. However, studies comparing different biologics are lacking. We evaluated the QoL in patients with severe asthma comprehensively and compare the efficacy of different T2-directed biologics using QoL questionnaires.

Exploring novel MYH7 gene variants using in silico analyses in Korean patients with cardiomyopathy.

BMC Med Genomics

September 2024

Division of Genome Science, Department of Precision Medicine, National Institute of Health, Cheongju, 28159, Republic of Korea.

Background: Pathogenic variants of MYH7, which encodes the beta-myosin heavy chain protein, are major causes of dilated and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Methods: In this study, we used whole-genome sequencing data to identify MYH7 variants in 397 patients with various cardiomyopathy subtypes who were participating in the National Project of Bio Big Data pilot study in Korea. We also performed in silico analyses to predict the pathogenicity of the novel variants, comparing them to known pathogenic missense variants.

Background: India ink has been a popular choice for a tattooing agent in preoperative endoscopic localization but often results in unfavorable effects. Subsequently, autologous blood tattooing has arisen as an alternative option. Due to the limited availability of comparative studies on the matter, we conducted a study to compare the perioperative outcomes associated with India ink tattooing versus autologous blood tattooing.

Background: Current guidelines recommend the perioperative continuation of aspirin in patients with coronary drug-eluting stents (DES) undergoing noncardiac surgery. However, supporting evidence is limited.

Objectives: This study aimed to compare continuing aspirin monotherapy vs temporarily holding all antiplatelet therapy before noncardiac surgery in patients with previous DES implantation.

The role of FEV/FVC in the prediction of acute exacerbation of COPD.

Respir Med

November 2024

Division of Pulmonary and Allergy, Department of Internal Medicine, Konkuk University Medical Center, Konkuk University School of Medicine, Seoul, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

Background: Whether the ratio of forced expiratory volume in 1 s to forced vital capacity (FEV/FVC) can be used as a biomarker to predict the risk of acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) is unclear.

Methods: To investigate the predictive role of FEV/FVC for AECOPD, we analyzed data from an observational and multicenter cohort study of 2043 patients with COPD in KOREA. Exposures were post-bronchodilator FEV/FVC and/or percentage predicted FEV (FEV%pred).

Article Synopsis
  • This study evaluated the effects of increasing the dosage of brolucizumab in patients with hard-to-treat neovascular AMD, showing promising results over 12 months.
  • A total of 17 patients were transitioned from standard doses to a higher dose, with results indicating maintained visual acuity and reduced central subfield thickness.
  • Notably, there was a significant decrease in fluid accumulation in patients, and no serious side effects were reported, suggesting high-dose treatment could alleviate patient treatment burden.

Article Synopsis
  • This study assesses the accuracy of CT and MRI scans in diagnosing various orbital diseases, involving 126 CT and 65 MRI scans from 144 subjects.
  • Radiologists achieved high accuracy rates (0.87 to 0.90) for conditions like cellulitis and inflammation, with excellent recognition of GPA (0.98 to 0.99) but lower accuracy for sarcoidosis (0.48 to 0.50).
  • While CT and MRI are useful for evaluating orbital diseases, the study suggests a need for further research to compare imaging methods and their effectiveness in gauging disease activity.

  • Hand arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are tricky to treat because they can affect hand function and appearance, so a study looked at how different doctors worked together on this problem.
  • The study tracked 150 patients from 1995 to 2023, finding that many of them received a treatment called sclerotherapy, which helps reduce the AVMs, but it can have side effects.
  • Results showed that while some patients got better, others needed surgery or even amputation, showing that each person's treatment needs to be carefully considered.

Background: Clustering lifestyle risk behaviors is important for predicting cardiovascular disease risk. However, it is unclear which behavior mediates other ones to influence cardiovascular disease risk. We aimed to assess the causal inference of each lifestyle risk behavior for the atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk of the general population.

  • The study addresses the challenges of placing dental implants correctly due to different shapes of the mandible, which can lead to complications like lingual perforations.
  • By analyzing 96 cone-beam CT images, researchers classified mandibular shapes into U, C, and P types, finding that U-shaped mandibles are the most prone to perforations.
  • The results showed U, P, and C shapes appear in 34.6%, 28.9%, and 36.5% of cases respectively, with significant differences in shape related to gender, age, and tooth type, highlighting the importance of understanding these anatomical variations for safer dental procedures.

Opicapone for the treatment of early wearing-off in levodopa-treated Parkinson's disease: pooled analysis of patient level data from two randomized open-label studies.

J Neurol

October 2024

Clinical Investigation Center CIC1436, Departments of Neurosciences and Clinical Pharmacology and NS-Park/FCRIN Network, University of Toulouse 3, University Hospital of Toulouse, INSERM, Toulouse, France.

Background: The wearing-off phenomenon is a key driver of medication change for patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) treated with levodopa. Common first-line options include increasing the levodopa dose or adding a catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) inhibitor, but there are no trials comparing the efficacy of these approaches. We evaluated the effectiveness of adjunct opicapone versus an additional 100 mg levodopa dose in PD patients with early wearing-off using pooled data from 2 randomized studies.

Introduction: The relationship between fat mass and osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and osteosarcopenia is complex. While higher fat mass generally has a negative impact on bone and muscle health in the general population, the impact in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients is less well understood.

Methods: In this study of 359 PD patients, sarcopenia was identified using appendicular skeletal muscle per square meter (ASM/m2), with cut-off values of <7.
