J Mov Disord

January 2024

Department of Neurology, Movement Disorder Center, Seoul National University Hospital, Seoul National University College of Medicine, Seoul, Korea.

Objective: Parkinson's disease (PD) patients often find it difficult to visit hospitals because of motor symptoms, distance to the hospital, or the absence of caregivers. Telemedicine is one way to solve this problem.

Methods: We surveyed 554 PD patients from eight university hospitals in Korea.

Background/aims: The overall incidence of pneumococcal pneumonia is declining. However, the change in the pathogenic distribution of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients and the serotype specificity of Streptococcus pneumoniae have not been evaluated in the post-era of pneumococcal vaccination in Korea.

Methods: We conducted a prospective, multi-center, cohort study from seven University-affiliated hospitals.

The cervical spine plays a critical role in supporting the skull, maintaining horizontal gaze, and facilitating walking. Its unique characteristics, including the widest range of motion among spinal segments, have led to extensive research on cervical sagittal alignment. Various parameters have been proposed to evaluate cervical alignment, with studies investigating their clinical significance, correlation with symptoms, and implications for surgical interventions.

Admission LDL-cholesterol, statin pretreatment and early outcomes in acute ischemic stroke.

J Clin Lipidol

December 2023

Department of Neurology (Drs Kim, Kang, Lee, Bae), Cerebrovascular Center, Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, Seongnam, Korea. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the complex relationship between low LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) levels and early vascular outcomes in acute ischemic stroke patients, noting that lower LDL-C levels might lead to worse outcomes at first glance.
  • Researchers analyzed over 32,500 patients and found a U-shaped relationship between LDL-C levels and three-month outcomes, with the highest events occurring in those with low LDL-C, but this trend wasn’t significant after adjustments were made.
  • The findings suggest that statin pretreatment may mitigate the negative effects associated with low LDL-C levels, indicating the need for further research on this paradoxical relationship.

Department of Neurology, Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital, Hallym University, Anyang, Gyeonggi, 14068, South Korea; Hallym Neurological Institute, Hallym University, Anyang, Gyeonggi, 14068, South Korea.

Background: Immunoproteasome, a part of ubiquitin-proteasome system, is involved in immune response as well as protein degradation. However, the relationship between immunoproteasome and Parkinson's disease (PD) was not evaluated clearly. We hypothesized that the shift of immunoproteasome attributes to PD pathogenesis due to its role in inflammation and protein homeostasis.

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital, Anyang 14066, Republic of Korea; Department of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics in Dentistry, Graduate School of Clinical Dentistry, Hallym University, Chuncheon 24252, Republic of Korea; Institute of Clinical Dentistry, Hallym University, Chuncheon 24252, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

Objectives: Surgeons often encounter challenges when treating maxillofacial fractures using conventional methods that involve trimming or bending ready-made titanium plates for open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) since it can be time-consuming, imprecise, and inconvenient. This retrospective case series aimed to introduce a novel bone reduction method that utilizes virtual planning, patient-specific surgical guides, and titanium plates.

Methods: Seven patients with mandibular symphysis or subcondylar fractures resulting from facial trauma underwent cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) or facial CT scans, and their medical histories were documented.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore the efficacy of plasma markers such as neurofilament light chain (NfL), phosphorylated tau (p-Tau), and total tau (t-Tau) in determining the clinical severity of Huntington's disease (HD) among Korean patients.
  • Involving 67 genetically-confirmed HD patients, researchers utilized various assessment tools to evaluate motor and cognitive function and measured plasma concentrations of the biomarkers using advanced assays.
  • Results indicated that NfL was significantly elevated in HD patients, particularly increasing from premanifest to manifest stages, while p-Tau levels correlated with clinical severity but t-Tau did not show notable differences among groups, suggesting NfL and p-Tau as potential biomarkers for HD severity.

Medial meniscus posterior root tears (MMRTs), defined as tears or avulsions that occur within 1 cm of the tibial attachment of the medial meniscus posterior root, lead to biomechanically detrimental knee conditions by creating a functionally meniscal-deficient status. Given their biomechanical significance, MMRTs have recently been gaining increasing interest. Accordingly, numerous studies have been conducted on the anatomy, biomechanics, clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment of MMRTs, and extensive knowledge has been accumulated.

Comparison of Hospital Performance in Acute Ischemic Stroke Based on Mortality and Functional Outcome in South Korea.

Circ Cardiovasc Qual Outcomes

August 2023

Department of Neurology, Seoul National University College of Medicine, Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, Seongnam, Republic of Korea (B.S.K.Y., K.-J.L., B.J.K., M.-K.H., H.-J.B.).

Article Synopsis
  • Recent research indicates a lack of interchangeability between modified Rankin Scale measures of functional outcomes and mortality measures in assessing hospital performance for acute ischemic stroke patients.
  • The study evaluated 8292 hospitalized stroke patients and used various metrics like 1-month and 1-year mortality to assess hospital outcomes.
  • Findings revealed no significant correlation between hospitals’ rankings based on functional outcomes and those based on mortality rates, suggesting that these measures evaluate different aspects of hospital performance.

Article Synopsis
  • - Obesity is prevalent among peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients and is linked to elevated serum ferritin levels, though the impact of these levels on patient prognosis has shown mixed findings.
  • - In a study of 350 well-nourished PD patients, a significant number (18%) had high ferritin levels (≥600 ng/mL), which correlated with greater body fat and lower lean tissue mass.
  • - The research indicated that high ferritin levels are connected to increased all-cause mortality in PD patients, highlighting that greater body fat is a key factor influencing these high ferritin levels.
