Hepatitis B Virus DNA-Level Change is Associated With Tumor Recurrence in Patients With Resected Hepatitis B Virus Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

Introduction: To investigate the significance of perioperative hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA changes for predicting recurrence in patients with HBV-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) undergoing liver resection (LR).

Methods: From 2013 to 2020, 241 patients with HBV-related HCC who underwent LR in five Hallym university-affiliated hospitals were enrolled. The serum HBV DNA level, together with other clinicopathological variables, was analyzed for association with HCC recurrence.

Risk factors for early-onset lung cancer in Korea: analysis of a nationally representative population-based cohort.

Objectives: We examined the associations of socioeconomic factors, health behaviors, and comorbidities with early-onset lung cancer.

Methods: The study included 6,794,287 individuals aged 20-39 years who participated in a Korean national health check-up program from 2009 to 2012. During the follow-up period, 4,684 participants developed lung cancer.

Importance: As patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are more likely to have complex coronary lesions, intravascular imaging guidance in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for this population could be potentially beneficial.

Objectives: To investigate whether the outcomes of intravascular imaging-guided procedural optimization would be different according to the presence of CKD.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This was a prespecified substudy of RENOVATE-COMPLEX-PCI, a recently published multicenter randomized clinical trial in Korea studying the benefits of intravascular imaging for complex coronary lesions.

Clinical Benefit of Intravascular Imaging Compared With Conventional Angiography in Left Main Coronary Artery Intervention.

Background: The RENOVATE-COMPLEX-PCI (Randomized Controlled Trial of Intravascular Imaging Guidance Versus Angiography-Guidance on Clinical Outcomes After Complex Percutaneous Coronary Intervention) demonstrated that intravascular imaging-guided percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) improved clinical outcome compared with angiography-guided PCI for patients with complex coronary artery lesions. This study aims to assess whether the prognostic benefit of intravascular imaging-guided procedural optimization persists in patients undergoing PCI for left main coronary artery disease.

Methods: Of 1639 patients enrolled in the RENOVATE-COMPLEX-PCI, 192 patients with left main coronary artery disease were selected for the current prespecified substudy.

Risk for Esophageal Cancer Based on Lifestyle Factors-Smoking, Alcohol Consumption, and Body Mass Index: Insight from a South Korean Population Study in a Low-Incidence Area.

Esophageal cancer constitutes a global public health challenge. However, South Korean population-specific information on the association of lifestyle (smoking, alcohol consumption, and obesity status) with esophageal cancer risk is sparse. This nested case-control study analyzed the Korean national health screening cohort data (2002-2019) of 1114 patients with esophageal cancer and 4456 controls (1:4 propensity-score matched for sex, age, income, and residential region).

Assessment of deep learning-based auto-contouring on interobserver consistency in target volume and organs-at-risk delineation for breast cancer: Implications for RTQA program in a multi-institutional study.

Purpose: To quantify interobserver variation (IOV) in target volume and organs-at-risk (OAR) contouring across 31 institutions in breast cancer cases and to explore the clinical utility of deep learning (DL)-based auto-contouring in reducing potential IOV.

Methods And Materials: In phase 1, two breast cancer cases were randomly selected and distributed to multiple institutions for contouring six clinical target volumes (CTVs) and eight OAR. In Phase 2, auto-contour sets were generated using a previously published DL Breast segmentation model and were made available for all participants.

Factors for predicting recurrence after burr hole drainage for chronic subdural hematoma: a retrospective study.

Chronic subdural hematoma (SDH) is a common disease in the neurosurgical field, and hematoma drainage through burr hole trephination has been widely considered the optimal treatment for SDH. Despite numerous investigations aimed at predicting recurrence rates and associated factors, studies have demonstrated inconsistent results. In this study, we aimed to comprehensively determine the predictive factors of chronic SDH recurrence in surgically treated patients.

Outcome of Multiple Myeloma Patients With Hepatitis B Surface Antigen: Korean Multiple Myeloma Working Party 2103 Study.

Background: Hepatitis B virus reactivation (HBVr) is a well-known complication of systemic chemotherapy for particularly hematologic malignancies in HBV carriers. We performed a multicenter retrospective study to investigate the incidence and risk factors of HBVr in patients with hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive multiple myeloma (MM).

Methods: We included 123 patients with HBsAg-positive MM who had received systemic therapy.

Nighttime administration of antihypertensive medication: a review of chronotherapy in hypertension.

Hypertension remains a global health concern because of suboptimal blood pressure control despite advancements in antihypertensive treatments. Chronotherapy, defined as evening or bedtime administration of medication based on biological rhythms, is emerging as a potential strategy to improve blood pressure control and treatment outcomes. Clinical trials have investigated the potential effects of nighttime administration of antihypertensive medication in the improvement of 24 hours blood pressure control and reduction of cardiovascular risk.

Open-labeled, multicenter phase II study of prophylactic administration of pegylated granulocyte colony-stimulating factor in relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma who received pomalidomide-based regimens (KMM170).

Introduction: Pegylated granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) has been widely used for preventing febrile neutropenia in various types of cancer treatment. In the present study, we prospectively evaluated the safety and efficacy of pegfilgrastim as a primary prophylaxis of febrile neutropenia and infection among patients with relapsed refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM) treated with pomalidomide-based regimens.

Methods: Thirty-three patients with RRMM who received pomalidomide and dexamethasone (Pd) with or without cyclophosphamide (PCd) were enrolled in this study.

Background: We aimed to investigate the association between the ApoB/ApoA-I ratio and post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) in patients with acute stroke of large artery atherosclerosis etiology.

Methods: Prospective stroke registry data were used to consecutively enroll patients with acute ischemic stroke due to large artery atherosclerosis. Cognitive function assessments were conducted 3 to 6 months after stroke.

The Relationship between Breakfast and Sleep and Cardiovascular Risk Factors.

Despite extensive research on the individual effects of breakfast and sleep on health outcomes, there has been limited investigation into their combined effects. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between breakfast-eating behavior and sleep timing on cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. A total of 16,121 participants (6744 men and 9377 women) aged 19 years or older were selected from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (2016-2018, 2021).

Relationship between heated tobacco product use and allergic rhinitis in Korean adults.

Introduction: Combustible cigarette (CC) smoking is a risk factor for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma, and some studies reported that tobacco smoking might affect the development or symptom control of allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, and atopic dermatitis. However, evidence on the health risks of heated tobacco products (HTPs) is lacking. We investigated the prevalence of respiratory and allergic diseases according to tobacco use types in Korean adults.

Improvement in Delivery of Ischemic Stroke Treatments but Stagnation of Clinical Outcomes in Young Adults in South Korea.

Background: There is limited information on the delivery of acute stroke therapies and secondary preventive measures and clinical outcomes over time in young adults with acute ischemic stroke. This study investigated whether advances in these treatments improved outcomes in this population.

Methods: Using a prospective multicenter stroke registry in Korea, young adults (aged 18-50 years) with acute ischemic stroke hospitalized between 2008 and 2019 were identified.

Improving mammography interpretation for both novice and experienced readers: a comparative study of two commercial artificial intelligence software.

Objectives: To evaluate the improvement of mammography interpretation for novice and experienced radiologists assisted by two commercial AI software.

Methods: We compared the performance of two AI software (AI-1 and AI-2) in two experienced and two novice readers for 200 mammographic examinations (80 cancer cases). Two reading sessions were conducted within 4 weeks.

Marrow stimulation procedures for high-grade cartilage lesions during surgical repair of medial meniscus root tear yielded suboptimal outcomes, whilst small lesions showed surgical eligibility.

Purpose: To investigate the surgical outcomes of arthroscopic pull-out repair for medial meniscus root tear (MMRT) combined with the marrow stimulation procedures (MSP) for accompanying high-grade cartilage lesions.

Methods: Patients who underwent arthroscopic pull-out repair for MMRT between 2010 and 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients who had at least 3 years of follow-up were included and classified into two groups according to whether MSP (microfracture or microdrilling) were performed on cartilage lesions in the medial tibiofemoral joint (group 1, patients with International Cartilage Repair Society [ICRS] grade 0-3a lesions and did not undergo MSP; group 2, patients with ICRS grade 3b-3d lesions and underwent MSP).

A case series of surgical outcomes for orbital blowout fracture with extraocular muscle entrapment.

Although early surgical intervention to avoid muscle degeneration in patients with blowout fractures (BOFs) and extraocular muscle entrapment is recommended, there is still no gold standard for the surgical timing of extraocular muscle release. This study aimed to present our 10-year experience with surgical outcomes in BOF patients with extraocular muscle entrapment to provide supporting data for determining the surgical timing for better outcomes. We conducted a retrospective study of patients with BOFs with extraocular muscle entrapment who underwent surgery at a tertiary hospital between December 2009 and October 2019.

The impact of early cryoballoon ablation on clinical outcome in patients with atrial fibrillation: From the Korean cryoballoon ablation registry.

Introduction: Influence of early atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation, particularly cryoballoon ablation (CBA), on clinical outcome during long-term follow-up has not been clarified. The objective was to determine whether an early CBA (diagnosis-to-ablation of ≤6 months) strategy could affect freedom from AF recurrence after index CBA.

Methods: The study included 2605 patients from Korean CBA registry data with follow-up >12 months after de novo CBA.

Attitudes of medical students on conflict of interest: A comparative study of Korea and France.

Medical students are potential marketing targets for pharmaceutical companies because established prescribing habits are not easily altered. In 2014, Bruno Etain and several other researchers published a paper which investigated the knowledge of and opinions on potential conflict of interest (COI) with regard to preclinical and clinical students enrolled in medical schools in France and residents working in hospitals. An empirical survey study with Korean medical students concerning their educational experiences and views on conflicts of interest and comparing and contrasting the results with Etain's study of French medical students.
