Article Synopsis
  • * Skin biopsies from patients with PPP (40) and pompholyx (22) were analyzed, revealing that K5 expression was significantly higher in PPP and K9 was more present near pompholyx vesicles.
  • * The findings indicate that PPP and pompholyx show different expression profiles for certain proteins, which could assist in differentiating between the two conditions in clinical practice.

With increasing interest in the inflammation-pathogen infection hypothesis and its potential links to Alzheimer's disease (AD) development, there is growing consideration of using upper respiratory infection (URI) treatments as interventions for AD. This nested case-control study explored the potential association between prior URI histories and AD development in a Korean adult population using the national health screening cohort data (2002-2019). The study included 26,920 AD patients and 107,680 matched control individuals, focusing on those seeking respiratory treatment.

Mediating effect of vascular calcification in galectin-3-related mortality in hemodialysis patients.

Sci Rep

January 2024

Department of Internal Medicine and Kidney Research Institute, Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital, Pyungan-dong, Dongan-gu, Anyang, 431-070, Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • Galectin-3 levels may serve as a biomarker for predicting cardiovascular risk and mortality in hemodialysis patients, particularly linked to vascular calcification.
  • A study involving 477 hemodialysis patients found a significant correlation between elevated galectin-3 levels, higher aortic arch calcification scores, and increased mortality risk.
  • Mediation analysis indicated that both direct effects of galectin-3 on mortality and indirect effects through vascular calcification and inflammation contribute to this association.

Effect of sugammadex on postoperative complications in patients with severe burn who underwent surgery: a retrospective study.

Sci Rep

January 2024

Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, College of Medicine, Chuncheon Sacred Heart Hospital, Hallym University, 77 Sakju-ro, Chuncheon, 24253, South Korea.

This retrospective study investigated the association of sugammadex with postoperative pulmonary complication risk between 2013 and 2021 in patients with severe burn of five hospitals. Postoperative pulmonary complications included atelectasis, pulmonary edema, pulmonary effusion, pneumothorax, pneumonia, pulmonary thromboembolism, respiratory failure and acute respiratory distress. To identify whether sugammadex reduced the risk of postoperative pulmonary complication in patients with severe burn who underwent surgery, Kaplan-Meier curve were used to check the difference of incidence according to surgical cases and time-varying Cox hazard regression were used to calculate the hazard ratio.

Background And Purpose: The influence of imaging features of brain frailty on outcomes were investigated in acute ischemic stroke patients with minor symptoms and large-vessel occlusion (LVO).

Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of a prospective, multicenter, nationwide registry of consecutive patients with acute (within 24 h) minor (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score=0-5) ischemic stroke with anterior circulation LVO (acute minor LVO). Brain frailty was stratified according to the presence of an advanced white-matter hyperintensity (WMH) (Fazekas grade 2 or 3), silent/old brain infarct, or cerebral microbleeds.

Objective: Although adult spinal deformity (ASD) surgery aims to restore and maintain alignment, proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK) may occur. While existing scoring systems predict PJK, they predominantly offer a generalized 3-tier risk classification, limiting their utility for nuanced treatment decisions. This study seeks to establish a personalized risk calculator for PJK, aiming to enhance treatment planning precision.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compared the effectiveness and safety of two treatments for metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (mHSPC): androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT) combined with abiraterone/prednisone versus ADT combined with docetaxel.
  • It analyzed data from 928 patients in South Korea, specifically focusing on 122 patients who received either treatment, assessing various factors like demographic characteristics, cancer status, and treatment outcomes.
  • Results showed that the ADT+abiraterone/prednisone group had a significantly lower rate of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) progression and a lower rate of treatment discontinuation compared to the ADT+docetaxel group, indicating it may be more effective, although further research is

Article Synopsis
  • This study explored how typical atrial flutter affects long-term outcomes in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) undergoing cavotricuspid isthmus (CTI) ablation for rhythm control.
  • Out of 1,907 patients analyzed, 493 (25.9%) had typical atrial flutter, which was associated with a lower recurrence rate of overall atrial arrhythmias (19.7%) compared to those without it (29.9%).
  • The results suggest that having atrial flutter may be beneficial for patients with AF, as it leads to less frequent AF recurrence, indicating that routine screening and ablation for atrial flutter could enhance treatment outcomes for AF patients.

Objective: The purpose of this article was to introduce a method for the digital application of three-dimensional (3D) diagnosis and treatment with a virtual articulator and 3D data.

Clinical Consideration: With the use of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and intraoral and facial scans, we can create a virtual articulator and evaluate the mandibular position in maximum intercuspation and centric-related occlusion for the patient with an unstable occlusion and temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Based on this, we treated a case using a digital mandibular position indicator (MPI) and fabricated a stabilization splint using a 3D printer.
