We investigated the reference values of liver enzymes based on cardiometabolic risks among children and adolescents using the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. A total of 8091 subjects aged 10-18 years were included from the data from 2007-2017. Overall, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and the AST/ALT ratio varied with sex and age.

Differential influences of LDL cholesterol on functional outcomes after intravenous thrombolysis according to prestroke statin use.

Sci Rep

September 2022

Department of Neurology, Cerebrovascular Center, Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, Seoul National University College of Medicine, 82, Gumi-ro 173 Beon-gil, Bundang-gu, Seongnam-si, 13620, Gyeonggi-do, Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigated how low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels impact recovery after intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) in stroke patients, based on whether they used statins before the stroke.
  • Among the 4711 patients analyzed, those with low to intermediate LDL-C levels did not show improved outcomes compared to those with high LDL-C, indicating that overall LDL-C levels alone are not linked to recovery at 3 months post-treatment.
  • However, for patients who took statins before their stroke, lower LDL-C levels were associated with better recovery outcomes, suggesting that statin use may influence how LDL-C affects recovery after an ischemic stroke.

Recent monkeypox (MPX) outbreaks are major ones in non-endemic countries. The present study analyzed molecular phylogenetics, divergence, epidemiology, the geographical distribution, entropy diversity of genome, mutational landscape, and evolution of the monkeypox virus (MPXV) genome and the current MPXV is entitled "hMPXV1." We used different in-silico and statistical methods to study our objectives.

Perioper Med (Lond)

September 2022

Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Hallym University Chuncheon Sacred Heart Hospital, Hallym University Medical Center, 77 Sakju-ro, Chuncheon, 24253, South Korea.

Background: The American Society of Anesthesiologists Physical Status Classification System is commonly used for preoperative assessment. Patient physical status before surgery can play an important role in postoperative nausea and vomiting. However, the relationship between the physical status classification and postoperative nausea and vomiting has not been well defined.

Background: Previous literatures suggest that the prognosis of Kienböck's disease might be favorable despite no surgery if it is diagnosed in late age, but the evidence is not clear. The aim of this study was to determine the radiographic and clinical progression of Kienböck's disease diagnosed at more than 50 years of age.

Methods: Data of 27 patients diagnosed with Kienböck's disease at more than 50 years of age between 2000 and 2016 were investigated.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the mediation effect of depressive symptoms on the relationship between white matter hyperintensities and the basic activities of daily living (BADL) using an integrated approach to overcome the limitations of previous studies and examine the relationship among the three variables simultaneously.

Methods: We performed structural equation modeling using cross-sectional data from 497 Alzheimer's disease (AD), AD with small vessel disease, and subcortical ischemic vascular dementia patients enrolled in the Clinical Research for Dementia of South Korea registry who were diagnosed with mild-to-moderate dementia. Periventricular white matter hyperintensities (PWMHs) and deep white matter hyperintensities (DWMHs) were visualized separately at baseline using magnetic resonance imaging.

Background: High LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) is an established risk factor for cardiovascular disease and is considered an important therapeutic target. It can be measured directly or calculated from the results of other lipid tests. The Friedewald formula is the most widely used formula for calculating LDL-C.

Effectiveness and safety of EVT in patients with acute LVO and low NIHSS.

Front Neurol

August 2022

Department of Neurology and Cerebrovascular Center, Seoul National University College of Medicine, Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, Seongnam-si, South Korea.

Background And Purpose: There is much uncertainty in endovascular treatment (EVT) decisions in patients with acute large vessel occlusion (LVO) and mild neurological deficits.

Methods: From a prospective, nationwide stroke registry, all patients with LVO and baseline NIHSS <6 presenting within 24 h from the time last known well (LKW) were included. Early neurological deterioration (END) developed before EVT was prospectively collected as an increasing total NIHSS score ≥2 or any worsening of the NIHSS consciousness or motor subscores during hospitalization not related to EVT.

Risk factors for early mortality in patients with carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii bacteraemia.

J Glob Antimicrob Resist

December 2022

Department of Internal Medicine, Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, Seoul National University College of Medicine, Seongnam, Republic of Korea.

Objectives: Although many deaths due to carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) bacteraemia occur within a few days after the onset of bacteraemia, risk factors for early mortality (EM) have not been deeply investigated. We aimed to determine the risk factors for EM and the difference between risk factors associated with EM and late mortality (LM) in CRAB bacteraemia.

Methods: Clinical information on all patients with CRAB bacteraemia in 10 hospitals during a 1-year period was collected.

Socioeconomic burden of pneumonia due to multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Korea.

Sci Rep

August 2022

Department of Internal Medicine, Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, Seoul National University College of Medicine, Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, 82, Gumi-ro 173 Beon-gil, Bundang-gu, Seongnam, Gyeonggi-do, 13620, South Korea.

We aimed to estimate the socioeconomic burden of pneumonia due to multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (MRAB) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MRPA). We prospectively searched for MRAB and MRPA pneumonia cases and matched them with susceptible-organism pneumonia and non-infected patients from 10 hospitals. The matching criteria were: same principal diagnosis, same surgery or intervention during hospitalisation, age, sex, and admission date within 60 days.

  • The study investigates preventive health behaviors regarding the coronavirus pandemic among Korean young adults, focusing on the effects of risk perception variables like optimistic bias, hypochondriasis, and mass psychology.
  • Results indicate that mass psychology positively influences preventive health behavior, with individuals exhibiting higher compliance in practices like mask-wearing and vaccination compared to those with lower mass psychology levels.
  • The study highlights the importance of Korean collectivism and global fear of COVID-19 in shaping health behaviors, suggesting that mass psychology should guide future public health communication strategies.
