Background: Although respiratory tract infection is one of the most important factors triggering acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AE-COPD), limited data are available to suggest an epidemiologic pattern of microbiology in South Korea.
Methods: A multicenter observational study was conducted between January 2015 and December 2018 across 28 hospitals in South Korea. Adult patients with moderate-to-severe acute exacerbations of COPD were eligible to participate in the present study.

Background: despite of the beneficial effects of fibroblast growth factor (FGF) 21 in several metabolic diseases, the association of plasma FGF21 with muscle mass and muscle strength is still unclear.
Methods: a total of 386 community-dwelling older adults aged 70-84 years were analysed. Appendicular skeletal muscle mass was measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and normalised to the square of height (ASM/ht2).

In patients with intraoperative massive bleeding, the effects of fluid and blood volume on postoperative pulmonary edema are uncertain. Patients with intraoperative massive bleeding who had undergone a non-cardiac surgery in five hospitals were enrolled in this study. We evaluated the association of postoperative pulmonary edema risk and intra- and post-operatively administered fluid and blood volumes in patients with intraoperative massive bleeding.

There are insufficient data in managing patients at high risk of deterioration. We aimed to investigate that national early warning score (NEWS) could predict severe outcomes in patients identified by a rapid response system (RRS), focusing on the patient's age. We conducted a retrospective cohort study from June 2019 to December 2020.

The evidence for the association between diurnal temperature range (DTR) and diabetic foot amputations is limited. We aimed to investigate the region-specific association between DTR and the amputation rate of diabetic foot in Korean national-wide data. Daily data on DTR and the rate of diabetic foot amputations from 16 provincial capital cities in Korea were obtained (2011-2018).

Besides obesity, there are limited studies regarding the relationship between the individual components of metabolic syndrome and wheezing. It is largely unknown whether the co-existence of other metabolic syndrome components has additive effects on wheezing in the adult population. The association between the individual components of metabolic syndrome and current wheezing was evaluated in adults using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2008 to 2012.

Recently, several emerging variants of SARS-CoV-2 have originated from the Wuhan strain and spread throughout the globe within one and a half years. One mutation, D614G, is very prominent in all VOI and VOC in SARS-CoV-2. This mutation might help to increase the viral fitness in all emerging variants where the mutation is present.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has reduced the ability to prevent or control chronic disease due to the concerns about safety in accessing health care. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic condition requiring long- term sustained treatment, which is difficult in the current panedemic situation. The Korean Association for the Study of Intestinal Diseases (KASID) has developed an expert consensus statement on the clinical practice management of adult inflammatory bowel disease during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background/aims: The appropriate number of band ligations during the first endoscopic session for acute variceal bleeding is debatable. We aimed to compare the technical aspects of endoscopic variceal ligation (EVL) in patients with variceal bleeding according to the number of bands placed per session.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed multicenter data from patients who underwent EVL for acute variceal bleeding.
Background/aims: Hypoxemia in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) leads to reduced ability to exercise, decreased quality of life, and, eventually, increased mortality. Home oxygen therapy in patients with severe COPD reduces distress symptoms and mortality rates. However, there have been few studies on physicians' prescription behavior toward home oxygen therapy.

Tuberculosis (TB) survivors experience post-TB lung damage and ventilatory function disorders. However, the proportions of obstructive and restrictive ventilatory disorders as well as normal ventilation among subjects with prior TB are unknown. In addition, the impacts of ventilatory disorder and its severity on respiratory symptoms, physical activity limitations, and the quality of life in subjects with prior TB remain unclear.
