Background: Data on the impact of valve position on clinical outcomes in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and bioprosthetic valves (BPVs) are limited.
Methods And Results: The BPV-AF Registry was a multicenter, prospective, observational study involving 894 patients with BPVs and AF. In this post-hoc substudy, patients were classified according to BPV position: aortic (n=588; 65.

Incomplete differentiation of the mitral valve structures during fetal life results in the papillary muscles and tendon cords becoming hypoplastic, a condition termed undifferentiated papillary muscles (UDPM). This fetal abnormality causes a group of diseases that cause mitral valve dysfunction in adult life. Here, we report a case of UDPM centered on the medial posterior apex in which detailed morphological abnormalities were diagnosed preoperatively using echocardiography and three-dimensional computed tomography (3DCT) analysis, contributing to plastic surgery.

Aims: Reproductive factors (reproductive period, age at menarche, and age at menopause) are associated with a risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and death in individuals without focusing on comorbid diabetes. However, it remains unclear whether this association also applies to individuals with diabetes. This study investigated the relationship between reproductive factors and the risk of CVD and death in postmenopausal Japanese women with type 2 diabetes.

Background And Purpose: Anticoagulant therapy with vitamin K antagonists is recommended within 3 to 6 months after bioprosthetic valve replacement to prevent thromboembolic events. However, data regarding whether direct oral anticoagulants can be an alternative to warfarin in such patients are limited. The purpose of this study is to compare the efficacy and safety of edoxaban versus warfarin within 3 months after bioprosthetic valve replacement.

Aims: Shorter and longer sleep durations are associated with adverse health consequences. However, available evidence on the association of sleep duration with constipation is limited, especially in patients with diabetes, who are at a high risk of both conditions. This study aimed to examine the association between sleep duration and constipation in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Left ventricular diastolic dysfunction exists in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction and causes activity restriction and a poor prognosis, but there have been few reports about exercise tolerance in patients with diastolic dysfunction, regardless of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). In this study, 294 cardiovascular disease patients who performed a cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPX) with an adequate examination by echocardiography at Fukuoka University Hospital from 2011 to 2020 were investigated. Patients were divided into groups with grade I and grade II or III diastolic dysfunction according to diagnostic criteria, regardless of LVEF, by echocardiography.

Introduction Low back pain (LBP) is a major contributor to decreases in the ability to perform activities of daily living (ADL) in older adults. Paralumbar spine disease (PLSD) is a common cause of LBP. We aimed to investigate the causes of LBP, including PLSD, among older adults.

Aim: Tongue strength plays an important role in the process of food intake, and low tongue pressure has been associated with aspiration pneumonia, cognitive decline, and mortality. However, special equipment for tongue pressure measurement is uncommon in general practice. Recently, the serum creatinine-to-cystatin C (Cr/CysC) ratio has been validated as a marker of muscle volume mass.

Aims: We prospectively investigated the incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD) and heart failure (HF), risk factors and prognosis in Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes.
Methods: A total of 4,874 outpatients with type 2 diabetes (mean age 65 years, male 57%, previous CHD 14%) were registered at multicenter diabetes clinics of a prefecture in 2008-2010 and followed for the development of CHD and HF requiring hospitalization for a median of 5.3 years (follow-up rate 98%).

Background: The excess risk of cardiovascular diseases associated with diabetes is greater in women than in men. The present study aimed to examine sex differences in the control of cardiovascular risk factors, as well as lifestyle and psychological factors, in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Methods: A total of 4923 Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes were included in this cross-sectional study.

Background: Pooled blood volume (PBV), measured in real-time in the angiography room using an angiography system, correlates with cerebral blood volume (CBV). We examined the usefulness of PBV in endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) for acute ischemic stroke (AIS).
Methods: EVT for AIS in the anterior circulation (internal carotid artery (ICA) and middle cerebral artery (MCA)) was performed in 31 cases (13 males, 18 females, average age 75.

Background: Little is known about the association between poststroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) and functional outcome in the acute care phase of ischemic stroke and the influence of the clinical condition of acute stroke on this association. We examined this issue, taking into account stroke-related factors, in a hospital-based prospective study of patients with acute ischemic stroke. The same analysis was also performed after subsequent rehabilitation to investigate whether the association observed in the acute care phase persisted after that.

A 71-year-old man was admitted to our institution complaining of abdominal pain and constipation. Barium enema examination revealed narrowing, cobble stoning, and longitudinal ulcerations in the sigmoid colon and upper rectum. Conventional colonoscopy, magnifying narrow-band imaging endoscopy, and magnifying chromoendoscopy revealed edematous mucosa, longitudinal ulcerations with luminal narrowing, and multiple pseudopolyps.

Aims: We prospectively investigated the association of urinary tubule injury markers with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) decline in Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes.
Methods: Urinary kidney injury molecule 1 (KIM-1), neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), liver-type fatty-acid-binding protein (L-FABP), and urinary albumin-to creatinine ratio (UACR) were measured in 2,685 participants with type 2 diabetes. Renal outcomes were ≥ 30% decline in eGFR from the baseline and annual eGFR decline for 5 years.

Aim: Secular trends in the risk of recurrent stroke have been reported in several epidemiological studies worldwide, but this issue has not been investigated in general Japanese populations. We examined the trends in the 5-year risk of recurrent stroke over a half century using community-based prospective data in Japan.
Methods: We established 4 cohort studies in 1961, 1974, 1988, and 2002.

We aimed to prospectively investigate the relationship between coffee consumption and the decline in estimated glomerular function rate (eGFR) in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Materials And Methods: A total of 3,805 patients (2,112 men, 1,693 women) with type 2 diabetes (mean age 64.

NADPH oxidase (Nox) 4 produces HO by forming a heterodimer with p22 and is involved in hemangioendothelioma development through monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) upregulation. Here, we show that Nox4 protein levels were maintained by p22 in hemangioendothelioma cells and Nox4 protein stability was dependent on p22 coexpression. Conversely, the degradation of Nox4 monomer was enhanced by p22 knockdown.

Several vaccines have been approved worldwide for the prevention of morbidity and mortality against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). However, the development of these vaccines has raised concerns regarding their adverse effects. Herein, we report the first case of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) due to vasculitis after the first dose of mRNA vaccine (BNT162b2, Pfizer/BioN-Tech).
