January 2025

Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Seoul National University Boramae Hospital, Seoul National University College of Medicine, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Scalp reconstruction, particularly with complex defects and infection risks, often favors microvascular free flaps. However, this method can result in unavoidable alopecia and undesirable aesthetics. This report describes a novel case where hair transplantation via follicular unit extraction (FUE) was applied to a free myocutaneous flap.

Dermatologists have been interested in recent advancements in regenerative therapy. Current research is actively investigating the possibility of placental tissue derivatives to decelerate the skin aging process, enhance skin regeneration, reduce scarring, and prevent hair loss. Amniotic membranes (AM) play a crucial role in regenerative medicine as they serve as a suitable means of transporting stem cells, growth hormones, cytokines, and other essential compounds.

The hair follicle is a complex of mesenchymal and epithelial cells acquiring different properties and characteristics responsible for fulfilling its inductive and regenerative role. The epidermal and dermal crosstalk induces morphogenesis and maintains hair follicle cycling properties. The hair follicle is enriched with pluripotent stem cells, where dermal papilla (DP) cells and dermal sheath (DS) cells constitute the dermal compartment and the epithelial stem cells existing in the bulge region exert their regenerative role by mediating the epithelial-mesenchymal interaction (EMI).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effectiveness of combining Endolift laser treatment with nanofat injections for reducing horizontal neck wrinkles in patients, recognizing the complexities of addressing this cosmetic concern.
  • Twenty patients were divided into two groups: one received both treatments, while the other got only nanofat injections, with monitoring for 6 months to evaluate changes in skin metrics and patient satisfaction.
  • Results showed that the combination treatment led to significantly better improvements in wrinkle depth, skin elasticity, and dermal thickness compared to nanofat alone, with a high patient satisfaction rate (90%) in the combination group.

Background: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of stromal vascular fraction (SVF), platelet rich plasma (PRP), and 1064-nm Q-switched Nd:YAG laser in reducing nanofat treated dark circles and wrinkles under the eyes.

Method: This study was a single-blinded randomized clinical trial conducted on patients with suborbital darkening under the eyes that randomly divided into control and case groups. In the control group, 15 patients were treated with one session of nanofat injection only, and five patients of each intervention groups received one session of nanofat+SVF injection, nanofat+PRP injection, and nanofat injection+Nd:YAG laser, respectively.

To date, the widespread implementation of therapeutic strategies for the treatment of chronic wounds, including debridement, infection control, and the use of grafts and various dressings, has been time-consuming and accompanied by many challenges, with definite success not yet achieved. Extensive studies on mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have led to suggestions for their use in treating various diseases. Given the existing barriers to utilizing such cells and numerous pieces of evidence indicating the crucial role of the paracrine signaling system in treatments involving MSCs, extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from these cells have garnered significant attention in treating chronic wounds in recent years.

The role of dexamethasone in mediating the contradictory effects of Wnt antagonists SFRP2 and SFRP3 on human hair follicle growth.

Sci Rep

October 2023

Department of Immunology, School of Medicine, Kyungpook National University, 680 Gukchaebosang-Ro, Jung-Gu, Daegu, 41944, Republic of Korea.

Stress can be one of the leading causes of hair loss. Stress related hormones, glucocorticoids (GCs), secretion by hair follicle have been mentioned in literature and proven to exert an inhibitory effect on hair follicle cells growth by modulating the expression of target genes related to cell proliferation and cycling. The gene modulating effect of the synthetic GC, dexamethasone (DEX), in human dermal papilla (DP) cells has been outlined in this study by mediating a contradictory effect on the expression of secreted frizzled related protein 2 (SFRP2) and SFRP3.

Background: Burns are caused by a variety of mechanisms, including flames, hot liquids, metallurgy, chemicals, electric current, and ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. The most significant burn wound management involves complete repair and regeneration as soon as possible while minimizing infection, contraction, and scarring in the damaged tissue area. Some factors such as delivery of nutrients, growth factors, and oxygen are essential to promote and stimulate the wound healing progress in the burns area.
