Enhanced classification and severity prediction of major depressive disorder using acoustic features and machine learning.

Front Psychiatry

September 2024

Early Intervention Unit, Department of Psychiatry, Affiliated Nanjing Brain Hospital, Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to improve classification accuracy of major depression (MDD) and healthy controls (HC) using deep learning methods based on vocal acoustic features from participants aged 16-25.
  • It involved 120 participants, with vocal data processed using the Covarep algorithm, and models built using Python to distinguish between MDD and HC and to predict depression severity.
  • Results indicated a high classification accuracy (84.16%) and strong correlation with the Hamilton Depression Scale, suggesting that vocal features can effectively differentiate between depression severity and healthy states.

Objective: Stathmin 1 (Stmn1) is a neuronal growth-associated protein which was found to be involved in fear processing both in animals and humans. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that 2 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the gene (rs182455 and rs213641) significantly impacted individual fear and anxiety responses in German. However, there have been no reports on the correlation between SNPs and anxiety in Chinese.

Background: Blonanserin (BNS) had been undergoing post-market surveillance (PMS) since September 2018. Using the surveillance data, we did this analysis to assess the safety and effectiveness of different doses of BNS to explore a sufficient dose range of BNS in Chinese patients with schizophrenia (SZ).

Methods: A 12-week, prospective, observational, single-arm, multicenter, open-label PMS was conducted.

Aims: The dopamine- and cAMP-regulated phosphoprotein (DARPP-32), which is encoded by the gene, plays a converging regulatory role in the central nervous system by mediating the actions of dopamine, serotonin, and glutamate. Previous studies have demonstrated that variations in genes related to the dopamine system influence working memory. The present study thus investigated whether polymorphisms in gene were associated with working memory.

Integrated untargeted fecal metabolomics and gut microbiota strategy for screening potential biomarkers associated with schizophrenia.

J Psychiatr Res

December 2022

Key Laboratory of Tropical Biological Resources of Ministry of Education, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Hainan University, Haikou, 570228, China. Electronic address:

Schizophrenia (SZ) is a serious neurodevelopmental disorder. As the etiology of SZ is complex and the pathogenesis is not thoroughly understood, the diagnosis of different subtypes still depends on the subjective judgment of doctors. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop early objective laboratory diagnostic biomarkers to screen different subtypes of patients as early as possible, and to implement targeted prevention and precision medicine to reduce the risk of SZ and improve patients' quality of life.

Article Synopsis
  • Schizophrenia is a complex mental illness, and blonanserin (BNS) is a new antipsychotic drug used to treat it, although large studies in China had been lacking.
  • A 12-week study on 1,060 patients examined the safety and effectiveness of BNS, with 1,018 patients included in the final analysis.
  • The results indicated a 20.1% incidence of adverse drug reactions, mainly extrapyramidal symptoms, and a significant percentage showed improvement in psychiatric symptoms, with over half of the patients responding positively to the treatment by week 12.

Background: Stress plays an important role in the pathogenesis of depression through functional changes to the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, a key output of which is the stress hormone cortisol. But the precise relationship between HPA axis activity and depression remains unclear, in part because mostly cortisol measurement only provides reflect acute or short-term fluctuations. In this study, hair cortisol and its metabolite cortisone were measured in a prospective, pre and post follow-up study of working stress and depressive symptoms in Chinese fishermen.

Background: Whether music therapy improves coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients' anxiety, depression, and life quality are still controversial. Therefore, to provide evidence-based medical evidence for clinical non-pharmacological interventions, we performed a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials of music therapy for COVID-19 patients' anxiety, depression, and life quality.

Methods: Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials Repositories, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Chinese Science Citation Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, Chinese Scientific Journal Database, and Wan-Fang database were searched to identify studies on the evaluation of the effectiveness of the music-based intervention on COVID-19 patients' anxiety, depression, and life quality from inception to May 2021.

Perceived social support (PSS) has been shown to be positively related to self-reported quality of life (QoL) as well as to emotion regulation strategy. In the present study, we compared a QoL index between Chinese fishermen ( = 507) and local villagers ( = 192) and examined whether PSS moderates the relationship between emotion regulation and QoL in our sample of Chinese ocean-going fishermen. Fishermen's QoL was found to be poorer than that of local villagers.

Key Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Hainan Medical College, Haikou 571199, Hainan Province, P. R. China.

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) dysfunction is associated with the pathophysiology of depression. Tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH), the rate-limiting enzyme in 5-HT biosynthesis, is believed to have essential role in many mental disorders, including depression. In the present study, we generated a rat model of depression by exposing the animals to stress, and the rats were then treated with paroxetine.
