This study aims to develop a prediction model to categorize the risk of early death among breast cancer patients with bone metastases using machine learning models. This study examined 16,189 bone metastatic breast cancer patients between 2010 and 2019 from a large oncological database in the United States. The patients were divided into two groups at random in a 90:10 ratio.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to create a predictive model and web-based calculator for estimating three-month mortality in patients with bone metastases from cancer of unknown primary (CUP) using machine learning techniques.
  • A total of 1,010 patients were analyzed using data from the SEER database and split into two groups for training and validation of the models, evaluating their prediction accuracy through various metrics.
  • Results indicated a high mortality rate of 72.38%, with factors like older age and organ-specific metastases increasing risk, while treatment methods such as radiation and chemotherapy provided protective benefits, with the random forest model proving most effective in predictions.

Purpose: Bone is one of the most common sites for the spread of malignant tumors. Patients with bone metastases whose prognosis was shorter than 3 months (early death) were considered as surgical contraindications. However, the information currently available in the literature limits our capacity to assess the risk likelihood of 3 month mortality.

Purpose: Although skin cutaneous melanoma (SKCM) is a relatively immunotherapy-sensitive tumor type, there is still a certain fraction that benefits less from treatment. Ferroptosis has been demonstrated to modulate tumor progression in many cancer types. This study focused on ferroptosis-related genes to construct a prognostic model for SKCM patients.

Article Synopsis
  • A clinical trial named CHANGE examined how nicorandil, a drug that may enhance blood flow and reduce heart damage, affects infarct size in heart attack patients undergoing a procedure called primary percutaneous coronary intervention.
  • The study included 238 patients who were randomly assigned to receive either nicorandil or a placebo prior to their treatment, with a focus on measuring infarct size using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging at 5 to 7 days and 6 months later.
  • Results showed that the nicorandil group had significantly smaller infarct sizes, less incidence of complications during the procedure, and better overall heart function compared to the placebo group.

Objective: To further understand the influence of regional and ethnic factors on blood routine indicators.

Methods: The routine blood test (RBT) results of 617 healthy men aged 18-45 years old of the Li, Tibet, and Han nationalities living in the city of Sanya, Hainan Province (200 m), the city of Xining, Qinghai Province (2,300 m), and Maduo County of Qinghai Province (4,300 m) for a long time were studied. Eight indexes, such as the red blood cell (RBC), hemoglobin (Hb), and platelet (PLT) counts, were compared and analyzed.

Introduction: The response is poorly understood to the third dose in patients with cancer who failed the standard dose of inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccines (CoronaVac). We aim to assess the immune response to the third dose and identify whether vitamin D deficiency is associated with serial serologic failure in patients with cancer.

Methods: Solid cancer patients (SCP-N) and healthy controls (HCs) who were seronegative after the standard-dose vaccines in our previous study were prospectively recruited, from October 2021 to February 2022, to receive the third dose vaccines and anti-SARS-CoV-2S antibodies were measured.

Cancer vaccines are viewed as a promising immunotherapy to eradicate malignant tumors and aim to elicit the patients' own tumor-specific immune response against tumor cells. However, few cancer vaccines have been applied due to the low immunogenicity of antigen and invalidation of adjuvant. Herein, we designed a tumor microenvironment (TME) responsive MnO-melittin nanoparticles (M-M NPs).

Coronary atherosclerotic heart disease poses a significant threat to human health. The pathological basis is atherosclerosis and foam-cell formation is the key factor in the initiation of atherosclerosis. In the present study, foam cell models were established using 50 ng/ml oxidized low-density lipoprotein to stimulate cultures of THP-1 cells for 72 h.

Renal ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury (RIRI) is the leading cause of acute kidney injury (AKI), a common disease with high morbidity and mortality. However, due to the lack of effective diagnostic and therapeutic tools, patients have to resort to conservative treatment. To address this issue, we have developed a novel prophylactic strategy that involves the pre-treatment use of ceria nanoparticles (CNPs) before surgery.

Health Inequality in the Global Burden of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: Findings from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019.

Int J Chron Obstruct Pulmon Dis

August 2022

Department of Thoracic Surgery, The Seventh Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, Shenzhen, People's Republic of China.

Background: This study assessed health inequality in the global burden of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) between 1990 and 2019 using data extracted from the Global Burden of Diseases (GBD 2019) study.

Methods: Data were extracted from the GBD 2019 study. A series of comparative and descriptive analyses of the disease burden between women and men in countries with different socioeconomic development (SDI) status were performed.

Previous studies have shown that ovarian estrogens are involved in the occurrence and pathology of Alzheimer's disease (AD) through regulation on hippocampal synaptic plasticity and spatial memory; however, the underlying mechanisms have not yet been elucidated at the genomic scale. In this study, we established the postmenopausal estrogen-deficient model by ovariectomy (OVX). Then, we used high-throughput Affymetrix Clariom transcriptomics and found 143 differentially expressed genes in the hippocampus of OVX mice with the absolute fold change ≥ 1.

This research was to investigate the value of indocyanine green angiography (ICGA) based on maximum interclass variance (Otsu) method in the nursing plan of intracranial aneurysm clipping (ICAC) for intracranial aneurysm patients. An Otsu algorithm was selected to optimize the original images with the optimal threshold. In addition, the algorithm was applied to ICGA images of 86 patients with intracranial aneurysms, who were randomly divided into an experimental group (using ICGA + ICAC+ perioperative nursing) and a control group (ICAC + conventional nursing), to observe the clinical indicators, treatment, complications, nursing satisfaction, and quality of life of patients in two groups.

EEG Evidence Reveals Zolpidem-Related Alterations and Prognostic Value in Disorders of Consciousness.

Front Neurosci

April 2022

Department of Electronic Engineering, Beijing National Research Center for Information Science and Technology (BNRist), Tsinghua University, Beijing, China.

Effective treatment and accurate long-term prognostication of patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC) remain pivotal clinical issues and challenges in neuroscience. Previous studies have shown that zolpidem produces paradoxical recovery and induces similar change patterns in specific electrophysiological features in some DOC (∼6%). However, whether these specific features are neural markers of responders, and how neural features evolve over time remain unclear.
