Nephrol Dial Transplant

November 2024

Kidney Institution of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, Chang Zheng Hospital, the Navy Military Medical University, Shanghai, China.

Article Synopsis
  • C5b-9 levels are higher in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), and its role in cyst growth is not fully understood.
  • Experimental methods involved treating different groups of chronic-onset Pkd1-/- mice with C5b-9, anti-C9 antibodies, or control substances and analyzing the effects on macrophages and cyst development.
  • Results indicated that C5b-9 induces the death of specific immune cells (Ly6C+ monocytes/macrophages), which promotes kidney cell growth and contributes to the worsening of cysts in the disease.

Impaired stemness in aging periodontal ligament stem cells is mediated by the progerin/endoplasmic reticulum stress/p53 axis.

J Adv Res

October 2024

State Key Laboratory of Oral & Maxillofacial Reconstruction and Regeneration, National Clinical Research Center for Oral Diseases, Shaanxi Key Laboratory of Stomatology, Department of Periodontology, School of Stomatology, The Fourth Military Medical University. Electronic address:

Introduction: Decreased periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) stemness is a key factor in age-related alveolar bone loss. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is closely related to age-related diseases and the mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) stemness. However, the role of ER stress in regulating the stemness of senescent PDLSCs and its potential mechanism remain unclear.

  • WTAP (Wilms' tumor 1-associating protein) is linked to the progression of colorectal cancer (CRC) and its role in influencing NLRP3-related inflammasomes is still under investigation.
  • The study confirmed that WTAP is highly expressed in CRC tissues and cells, and contributes to the proliferation, invasion, and migration of CRC cells while reducing apoptosis.
  • Mechanistically, WTAP modifies NLRP3 through m6A modifications, leading to repression of NLRP3 and inhibition of the NLRP3/Caspase-1/GSDMD axis, which promotes the malignant progression of CRC.

Pancreas Center, Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute and Hospital, National Clinical Research Center for Cancer, State Key Laboratory of Druggability Evaluation and Systematic Translational Medicine, Tianjin Key Laboratory of Digestive Cancer, Tianjin's Clinical Research Center for Cancer, Tianjin, People's Republic of China.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the preoperative fibrinogen to pre-albumin ratio (FPR) as a potential prognostic marker for patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) who undergo surgery.
  • A total of 563 PDAC patients were analyzed, showing that those with a high FPR (>14.77) had significantly worse recurrence-free and overall survival rates compared to those with a low FPR.
  • The findings suggest that FPR is a strong independent predictor of patient outcomes, indicating it could be beneficial for improving current prognostic models and guiding treatment decisions for PDAC patients.
