Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science, University of San Diego, San Diego, California.

Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute vasculitis that primarily affects young children and, if untreated, is associated with development of coronary artery aneurysms in approximately 25% of those affected. Infants, especially those younger than 6 months, often have atypical (incomplete) presentations of KD and are most at risk for development of aneurysms. Identification of KD requires a careful and thorough history and physical examination because multiple other conditions cause similar findings.

We conducted a process evaluation in the context of a Hybrid Type 1 randomized controlled trial testing two treatments for post-traumatic stress, using a web-based social network survey and semi-structured interviews to illustrate the relationship between providers' influence and likelihood of referring patients to the RCT. Providers with high indegree centrality (designated by other providers as someone they seek information from) were significantly more likely to refer patients to the RCT, and serve as an influence to others' referral behavior. Interviews provided additional data to consider for future studies aimed at increasing the uptake of evidence-based practices.

Objective: Compromised functional abilities in older adults with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) represent a significant burden to families and frequently lead to institutionalization. Contributing factors to this compromise are poorly understood.

Methods: Using data collected at a first study visit, multiple regression modeling was used to examine the associations between Braak staged Alzheimer disease (AD) pathology, Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) status, Parkinsonian gait, cognition, and functional status from a cohort of 102 cases with an autopsy-confirmed diagnosis of dementia stemming from combined Lewy body and AD pathology.

Directors of nursing (DONs) in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) have lower rates of baccalaureate attainment than acute care nurses for unclear reasons. To understand the interest in advancing education, researchers surveyed SNF DONs in Connecticut to examine their beliefs about academic advancement and the impact of DON education on resident outcomes.

Beyond competencies: Practice standards for emergency nurse practitioners-A model for specialty care clinicians, educators, and employers.

J Am Assoc Nurse Pract

October 2018

Clinical-Emory University Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, Emergency Nurse Practitioner, Emory Healthcare, Emory University Hospital, Atlanta, Georgia.

Background/purpose: The growth of advanced practice nursing specialties requires additional expertise for practice that goes beyond entry-level competencies, knowledge, skills, and abilities. A practice standards model for specialty nurse practitioners (PSMSNPs) is introduced that differentiates entry-to-practice population foci competencies from advanced specialty practice standards.

Objectives: (a) Differentiate competencies and practice standards in context to specialty NPs using the emergency specialty as the exemplar, (b) articulate the process to develop the PSMSNP that evolved from an evidence-based practice analysis of NPs working in emergency care, (c) apply the PSMSNP for adaptation to other specialties, and (d) provide implications for the utilization of the PSMSNP by educators, clinicians, and employers.
