In addition to peripheral neuropathy of various manifestations, diabetes is also associated with central neuropathy. This can manifest as premature cognitive decline, although the role of hyperglycemia in this process remains ambiguous. Notwithstanding that the link between diabetes and cognitive decline was discovered 100 years ago, and has important clinical implications, this co-morbidity remains relatively unknown.

Background: People who inject drugs (PWID) represent a population with an increased prevalence of hepatitis C (HCV) infections. HCV treatment among PWID is essential to reach the WHO goal of eliminating HCV as a major public health threat by 2030. Despite better understanding of PWID subgroups and changes in risk behaviors over time, more knowledge about HCV treatment outcomes in different HCV prevalence populations and settings is warranted to enhance the continuum of care.

Allergic rhinitis is the most common chronic disease in Sweden, with impact on quality of life and with a heavy economic burden for the society. More than 20 years have passed since national recommendations were launched, and meanwhile both ARIA (Allergic rhinitis and its impact of asthma) and EUFOREA (The European Forum for Research and Education in Allergy and Airway Diseases) have presented international guidelines which in this article have been adapted to the clinical situation in Sweden. Visual analogue scale (VAS) is recommended for symptom evaluation, and the importance of correct allergen analysis and examination for coexisting asthma is emphasized.

Incidence and mortality are default measures to describe cancer trends. Mortality compounds incidence and survival but not age at death. We calculated years of life lost (YLL) due to 1 of the 10 solid tumors causing most deaths (lung, colorectal, prostate, pancreatic, breast, hepatobiliary, urinary, central nervous system, gastric, melanoma) using Swedish National Cancer and Cause of Death Registers.

Background: Early-onset adenocarcinomas of different sites are increasing in high-income countries, data on esophagogastric adenocarcinoma are sparse.
Methods: We performed a Swedish population-based cohort study over 1993 to 2019 to delineate differences in incidence and survival in early-onset (age 20-54 years) compared with later-onset (55-99 years) esophageal, cardia, and noncardia gastric adenocarcinoma. Temporal incidence trends were quantified as annual percentage changes (APC) and survival differences as excess mortality rate ratios (EMRR) using Poisson regression and including 95% confidence intervals (CI).

This prospective randomized controlled study compared two injection techniques for trigger digit: either dorsal to the tendons in the proximal phalanx (PP group) or anterior to the tendons at the A1 pulley level (A1 group) in 106 patients. The primary outcome was the number of days to total relief of pain, stiffness and triggering, as recorded by the patients on visual analogue scales day-by-day for 6 weeks. The median number of days to complete symptom relief was 9 days in the PP group and 11 days in the A1 group for pain, 11 days and 15 days for stiffness and 21 and 20 days for triggering, respectively.

Tongue necrosis is a rare clinical finding because of its rich vascularisation. Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is the most frequent cause of it, and when present, it is usually one side affected. We describe a patient with several months of constitutional syndrome; during that period, she develops headache followed by tongue necrosis, which lead to clinical suspicion of GCA, later confirmed by a temporal artery biopsy.

Introduction: Female surgeons remain a minority within the field of orthopaedics, particularly in certain specialties such as arthroplasty. There is no scientific evidence on whether the surgeon's sex affects the patient-reported outcome after orthopaedic surgery such as total hip arthroplasty (THA). We therefore aimed to investigate the association between surgeon sex and health-related quality of life after THA.

Painful left bundle branch block syndrome is an uncommon chest pain condition, which is caused by rate-dependent left bundle branch block in the absence of myocardial ischemia. The onset and resolution of the chest pain follows that of the left bundle branch block aberrancy, with an intensity ranging from mild to incapacitating, and it can be treated by pacemaker implantation (preferably with so-called conduction system pacing, since dyssynchronous myocardial contraction is thought to be the culprit). To date, roughly 70 case reports of painful left bundle branch block syndrome have been published in the literature (with none of them originating from Sweden).

Ethical decisions such as "Do-Not-Attempt -Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation" (DNACPR) are much more common than actual resuscitation attempts of an in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA). Currently, no risk profiles for who will suffer an IHCA exit, neither has any published prediction model for survival after IHCA been accurate enough for clinical implementation. Swedish law implies that we should consult patients and/or relatives and a licensed colleague when making these decisions, which currently is fulfilled in a minority of the patients.

There is limited research about how age and ASA-physical status (PS) have changed among women undergoing caesarean sections (CS) and how these characteristics have affected all-cause 30-day mortality in Sweden during recent years. The aim of this study was to determine change in age and ASA-PS and impact on all-cause 30-day mortality among CS in Sweden between 2016 and 2022. Data regarding CS performed from 1 Jan 2016 to 30 Jun 2022 were collected from the Swedish Peri-Operative Register (SPOR).

MOGAD (myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody disease) is a newly defined inflammatory condition of the central nervous system. The presence of MOG antibodies holds a key role in the identification of the disease, as the detection of these anitbodies points to an inflammatory state with a distinct clinical presentation, specific radiological and laboratory findings, different course and prognosis as well as separate treatment considerations. Simultaneously, during the last two years healthcare worldwide has focused a large part of its resources on the management of COVID-19 patients.

Background: Proximal hamstring tendon avulsions (PHAs) may be treated nonoperatively or operatively. Little is known about the result of the injury, and its treatment, on the quality and function of the hamstring muscle after healing and rehabilitation. We hypothesized that the injured leg would have greater fatty infiltration and atrophy than the uninjured leg at follow-up and that these findings would correlate to muscle weakness.

Objectives: Self-monitoring of physical activity (PA) has the potential to contribute to successful behaviour change in PA interventions in different populations, including people with inflammatory joint diseases (IJDs). The objectives of this study were to describe the use and knowledge of self-report-based and device-based PA measures in people with IJDs in four European countries, and to explore if the use of such devices, sociodemographic or disease-related variables were associated with adherence to the recommendations of at least 150 min of moderate to vigorous PA per week.
Setting: Cross-sectional survey, performed in 2015-2016.
