Aim: Mortality and complication rates after surgery for colon cancer are high, especially after emergency procedures. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the importance of the formal competence of surgeons for survival and morbidity.

Method: The Swedish Colorectal Cancer Registry prospectively records data on patients diagnosed with cancer within the colon and rectum.

Adherence to Swedish national pregnancy dating guidelines and management of discrepancies between pregnancy dating methods: a survey study.

Background: Swedish national guidelines for pregnancy dating were published in 2010. Follow-up is needed to assess adherence and to identify whether any clinical topics are not covered in the guidelines.

Methods: All units in Sweden that performed ultrasound-based pregnancy dating were asked to complete a web-based questionnaire comprising multiple-response questions and commentary fields.

Radial versus femoral access in patients with acute coronary syndrome undergoing invasive management: A prespecified subgroup analysis from VALIDATE-SWEDEHEART.

Aims: In the Bivalirudin versus Heparin in ST-Segment and Non-ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction in Patients on Modern Antiplatelet Therapy in the Swedish Web System for Enhancement and Development of Evidence-based Care in Heart Disease Evaluated according to Recommended Therapies Registry Trial (VALIDATE-SWEDEHEART), bivalirudin was not superior to unfractionated heparin in patients with acute coronary syndrome undergoing invasive management. We assessed whether the access site had an impact on the primary endpoint of death, myocardial infarction or major bleeding at 180 days and whether it interacted with bivalirudin/unfractionated heparin.

Methods And Results: A total of 6006 patients with acute coronary syndrome planned for percutaneous coronary intervention were randomised to either bivalirudin or unfractionated heparin.

Postoperative complications in relation to overall treatment time in patients with rectal cancer receiving neoadjuvant radiotherapy.

Background: The optimal timing of surgery for rectal cancer after radiotherapy (RT) is disputed. The Stockholm III trial concluded that it was oncologically safe to delay surgery for 4-8 weeks after short-course RT (SRT), with fewer postoperative complications compared with SRT with surgery within a week. Other studies have indicated that an even shorter interval between RT and surgery (0-3 days) might be beneficial.

Background: Knowledge about the relationship between PSA, age and ISUP grade group (ISUP) 1 prostate cancer can improve clinical and biological understanding of prostate cancer. We aimed to investigate the associations between PSA and age and the risk of ISUP 1 and ISUP ≥ 2 prostate cancer, respectively.

Methods: We included 6 083 men aged 50-69 biopsied with a total of 72 996 individual biopsy cores from the prospective and population based Stockholm3 diagnostic study.

Insulin and its analogues have so far and for almost 100 years been the only officially approved treatment for type 1 diabetes in Europe. However, in clinical practice, various drugs against type 2 diabetes have sometimes been used off label as adjuvants to insulin for type 1 diabetes. Recently, the EMA approved the SGLT2 inhibitor dapagliflozin as an adjuvant treatment for type 1 diabetes in adults.

[Hemichorea/hemiballism a rare complication of hyperglycemia].

We present a case of hemichorea/hemiballism, a rare complication of hyperglycemia. Diagnosis is made clinically by signs of unilateral involuntary movements of the extremities combined with typical neuroradiological findings in the basal ganglia. Guidelines for treatment of the condition are lacking but in many cases correction for hyperglycemia is sufficient for full symptom relief.

Patient-reported outcomes after surgical and non-surgical treatment of proximal hamstring avulsions in middle-aged patients.

Objectives: In the literature on proximal hamstring avulsions, only two studies report the outcomes of non-surgically treated patients. Our objective was to compare subjective recovery after surgical and non-surgical treatment of proximal hamstring avulsions in a middle-aged cohort.

Methods: We included 47 patients (33 surgically and 14 non-surgically treated) with a mean (SD) age of 51 (±9) years in a retrospective cohort study.

Objectives: To identify all patients tested positive for herpes viruses in intraocular samples between 2007 and 2016 in South-Western Sweden and evaluate which of these met the criteria of acute retinal necrosis (ARN). A Nationwide, Population Based Analysis of Patients with Organ Confined, Muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer Not Receiving Curative Intent Therapy in Sweden from 1997 to 2014.

Purpose: While radical cystectomy remains the standard treatment of muscle invasive bladder cancer, the natural history of patients unable or unwilling to receive therapy with curative intent is not well understood. The study objective was to identify these patients in a population based cohort, investigate the clinical profile and describe time to mortality.

Materials And Methods: We analyzed the Bladder Cancer Data Base Sweden, a database collected from 1997 to 2014, and identified 9,811 patients with stage T2-T4 disease.

The short-term survival of total stemless shoulder arthroplasty for osteoarthritis is comparable to that of total stemmed shoulder arthroplasty: a Nordic Arthroplasty Register Association study.

Background: The purpose of this study was to compare the short-term survival rate of total stemless, metaphyseal fixated, shoulder arthroplasty with that of total stemmed shoulder arthroplasty in the treatment of osteoarthritis.

Methods: Data were collected by the national arthroplasty registries in Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden and merged into 1 dataset under the umbrella of the Nordic Arthroplasty Register Association. For the present study, we included all patients with osteoarthritis treated with either stemless (n = 761) or stemmed (n = 4398) shoulder arthroplasty from 2011 to 2016.

Secondary prevention after stroke/transient ischemic attack: A randomized audit and feedback trial.

Objectives: The clinical benefits of use of secondary preventive pharmacotherapy in ischemic stroke/TIA have been previously demonstrated. A potential target for facilitating the use of recommended medications is primary care physicians. Therefore, we carried out an audit and feedback intervention aimed at primary care centers.

Tumour regression after radiotherapy for rectal cancer - Results from the randomised Stockholm III trial.

Background And Purpose: Neoadjuvant radiotherapy (RT) in rectal cancer induces tumour regression with a possible complete response (pCR). The optimal fractionation and timing to surgery is not established. Purpose Intelligibility is a core concept of speech-language pathology, central both to the assessment of speech disorders and to intervention in such disorders. Cost analysis in a randomized trial of early closure of a temporary ileostomy after rectal resection for cancer (EASY trial).

Background: Hospital costs associated with the treatment of rectal cancer are considerable and the formation of a temporary stoma accounts for additional costs. Results from the EASY trial showed that early closure of a temporary ileostomy was associated with significantly fewer postoperative complications but no difference in health-related quality of life up to 12 months after rectal resection. The aim of the present study was to perform a cost analysis within the framework of the EASY trial.
