Palatability of the infant formulas lacking cow milk protein formulas is reported by parents to be an important drawback. The purpose of this study is to examine decisions made by mothers of infants having cow milk protein allergy, and physicians concerning the palatability of unflavored extensively hydrolyzed formulas and amino acid-based formulas. We conducted a multi-center, randomized, single-blinded, observational taste study involving 149 pediatricians from gastroenterology and allergy subspecialties at 14 tertiary healthcare units from different regions of Turkey and involving 94 mothers of infants with cow milk protein allergy.

Background: Neonates and infants requiring anaesthesia are at risk of physiological instability and complications, but triggers for peri-anaesthetic interventions and associations with subsequent outcome are unknown.

Methods: This prospective, observational study recruited patients up to 60 weeks' postmenstrual age undergoing anaesthesia for surgical or diagnostic procedures from 165 centres in 31 European countries between March 2016 and January 2017. The primary aim was to identify thresholds of pre-determined physiological variables that triggered a medical intervention.

An Unusual Presentation of Cytomegalovirus Infection: Generalized Edema.

Med Princ Pract

January 2021

Department of Pediatrics, Turkish Republic Health Ministry, Ankara Child Health Diseases, Haematology Oncology Training and Research Hospital, Ankara, Turkey.

Article Synopsis
  • Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection can, though rarely, cause protein-losing gastropathy in otherwise healthy children, leading to symptoms like nausea and abdominal pain, but sometimes manifests only as generalized edema.
  • A 5-year-old boy with no other symptoms presented with generalized edema and was found to have low albumin levels but no signs of protein loss in urine; gastrointestinal examinations revealed hypertrophic gastropathy.
  • Testing confirmed a CMV infection, and the child recovered on his own after about a week, indicating that CMV can cause protein loss symptoms without typical gastrointestinal manifestations.

The Frequency of Lysosomal Acid Lipase Deficiency in Children With Unexplained Liver Disease.

J Pediatr Gastroenterol Nutr

March 2019

Department of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, Atatürk University, Faculty of Medicine, Erzurum, Turkey.

Objectives: Evidence suggests that lysosomal acid lipase deficiency (LAL-D) is often underdiagnosed because symptoms may be nonspecific. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of LAL-D in children with unexplained liver disease and to identify demographic and clinical features with a prospective, multicenter, cross-sectional study.

Methods: Patients (aged 3 months-18 years) who had unexplained transaminase elevation, unexplained hepatomegaly or hepatosplenomegaly, obesity-unrelated liver steatosis, biopsy-proven cryptogenic fibrosis and cirrhosis, or liver transplantation for cryptogenic cirrhosis were enrolled.

Montelukast attenuates radioactive I131-induced pulmonary damage on rats.

Int J Radiat Biol

June 2018

b Department of Nuclear Medicine , University of Health Sciences, Ankara Training and Research Hospital, Ankara , Turkey.

Article Synopsis
  • Radioactive I131 (RAI) therapy is used to treat differentiated thyroid carcinomas but can cause adverse effects, particularly in nonthyroidal tissues like the lungs, due to radiation exposure.
  • The study investigated whether montelukast, an anti-inflammatory agent, could reduce radiation-induced lung damage in rats that received RAI therapy.
  • Results showed that rats given both RAI and montelukast had significantly less inflammation and fibrosis in their lungs compared to those who received RAI alone, indicating montelukast's potential radioprotective effects.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of paracetamol and lidocaine in reducing pain from rocuronium injection in pediatric patients during general anesthesia, as pain occurs in 50%-80% of cases.
  • Ninety children were split into two groups to receive either paracetamol or lidocaine before receiving the rocuronium injection, and their withdrawal responses were measured.
  • Results showed that paracetamol reduced withdrawal movements but was less effective than lidocaine for preventing moderate withdrawal movements, suggesting lidocaine is a better option for this purpose.
