The long-term outcomes of dental implants are influenced by a variety of factors, all of which play critical roles in their stability, functionality, and esthetic appeal. This review focuses on several key characteristics of dental implants that impact their success overtime: dimensional, morphologic, material, osseointegrative, and connective/prosthetic characteristics. This article synthesizes current literature to analyze how these factors influence the long-term success of dental implants, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach in implant selection and placement.

Epithelial RANKL Limits Experimental Periodontitis via Langerhans Cells.

J Dent Res

November 2024

Institute of Biomedical and Oral Research, Faculty of Dental Medicine, Hebrew University, Jerusalem, Israel.

Article Synopsis
  • - RANKL is identified as a key player in periodontitis, primarily influencing osteoclast differentiation and acting as a link between bone and the immune system, showcasing a complex role beyond its initial recognition as an activator of dendritic cells (DCs).
  • - In studies using ligature-induced periodontitis (LIP), rapid bone loss was observed, which eventually stopped despite the presence of the ligature, indicating a connection to immunosuppressive conditions in the gingiva associated with T regulatory (Treg) cell expansion.
  • - Experiments with K14-RANKL mice, which overexpress RANKL in gingival cells, revealed that increased RANKL leads to a favorable balance of immune cells

Background: Most western countries provide funded legal representation (LR) for involuntarily admitted psychiatric patients appearing before judicial committees. In 2004, an amendment to the Israeli Mental Health Act granted this right to involuntarily committed psychiatric patients. Psychiatrists then voiced concerns that LR may increase rates of premature discharge and compromise patients' safety and well-being.

Enhancer landscape of lung neuroendocrine tumors reveals regulatory and developmental signatures with potential theranostic implications.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

October 2024

The Lautenberg Center for Immunology and Cancer Research, Institute for Medical Research Israel-Canada, Faculty of Medicine, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Jerusalem 9112102, Israel.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates well-differentiated low-grade lung neuroendocrine tumors (LNETs), focusing on their classification and unique molecular profiles beyond the typical and atypical categories.
  • Researchers used genomic techniques to reveal three distinct regulatory subtypes of LNETs, each characterized by specific transcription factors and differentiation signals: "proneuronal," "luminal-like," and "HNF+."
  • Targeting the FGFR signaling pathway in the HNF+ subtype showed promise for reducing tumor growth, highlighting potential new therapeutic approaches for treating these tumors.

The European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) has developed evidence-based recommendations and expert opinions about end-of-life (EoL) and palliative care for critically ill adults to optimize patient-centered care, improving outcomes of relatives, and supporting intensive care unit (ICU) staff in delivering compassionate and effective EoL and palliative care. An international multi-disciplinary panel of clinical experts, a methodologist, and representatives of patients and families examined key domains, including variability across countries, decision-making, palliative-care integration, communication, family-centered care, and conflict management. Eight evidence-based recommendations (6 of low level of evidence and 2 of high level of evidence) and 19 expert opinions were presented.

Background: Preterm infants suffer from significant respiratory morbidity during the first years of life, but the underlying lung pathophysiology is not fully understood. This study aimed to comprehensively characterize the pulmonary functions of preterm infants using full infant pulmonary function testing (iPFT).

Methods: Between 2008 and 2019, we recruited 150 infants (M 10.

Objectives: Current recommendations do not separate adult and pediatric palliative care (PC) in terms of the personnel needed, or the distribution of care between community and hospital-based services. We evaluated the differences in the utilization of pediatric and adult hospital PC services for non-oncological patients.

Methods: Retrospective study.

IL-7-dependent and -independent lineages of IL-7R-dependent human T cells.

J Clin Invest

October 2024

Laboratory of Human Genetics of Infectious Diseases, Necker Branch, INSERM U1163, Necker Hospital for Sick Children, Paris, France.

Article Synopsis
  • Some babies with a specific mutation in the IL7R gene have a serious immune problem called SCID, where they lack a certain type of immune cells called T cells, but still have normal B and NK cells.
  • In a study of 6 adults who have a similar genetic issue, they showed low levels of T cells but had relatively normal levels of other immune cells, indicating a more specific problem in T cell development.
  • Even though their T cells didn’t grow well in the lab, the study hints that there might be another way T cells can develop that doesn’t depend solely on the IL-7 cytokine.

Israeli neonatal herpes simplex infection: Unique epidemiology and clinical profile.

J Med Virol

September 2024

Pediatric Infectious diseases Unit, Edmond and Lily Safra Children's Hospital, Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer, Ramat Gan, Israel.

Article Synopsis
  • A study conducted on Israeli neonatal herpes simplex virus (NHSV) infection collected data from 2015 to 2022, comparing clinical characteristics of NHSV patients with those suffering from neonatal enteroviral meningitis (NEM).
  • The results showed an NHSV incidence of 5.9 per 100,000 live births, with notable demographics suggesting that horizontal transmission was linked to practices like ritual circumcision.
  • NHSV patients presented unique symptoms such as a lower incidence of fever and irritability but showed a tendency for rashes and seizures, marking a distinct clinical profile compared to NEM, which can help guide treatment approaches for infected newborns.

Issues Concerning the Mechanisms of Bone Conduction.

Audiol Res

September 2024

Department of Medical Neurobiology (Physiology), Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical School, Jerusalem 91120, Israel.

Air and bone conduction thresholds are used to differentiate between conductive and sensori-neural hearing losses because bone conduction is thought to bypass the conductive apparatus, directly activating the inner ear. However, the suggested bone conduction mechanisms involve the outer and middle ears. Also, normal bone conduction thresholds have been reported in cases of lesions to the conduction pathway.

Background: Community water fluoridation began in the 1945 as a public health measure to prevent and control caries and was implemented in Israel in 1981. Community water fluoridation reduced caries significantly, but in 2014, the Ministry of Health decided to stop Community water fluoridation in Israel. The aim of our study was to examine the effect of fluoridation cessation on the dental health of children aged 3-5, treated in "Assuta Tel Aviv" dental clinics, under general anesthesia or deep sedation.

Intratumoral heterogeneity is an important clinical challenge because low burden clones expressing specific genetic alterations drive therapeutic resistance mechanisms. We have developed CAVE (cancer-associated variant enrichment), a gene-agnostic computational tool to identify specific enrichment of low-burden cancer driver variants in next-generation sequencing (NGS) data. For this study, CAVE was applied to TP53 in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) as a cancer model.
