Objective:  Placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) is a term used to describe trophoblast invasion into the uterine wall. The condition can be FATAL: at labor due to a lack of spontaneous separation of the placenta from the uterine wall, leading to severe hemorrhage. In this study, we aim to evaluate preoperative risk factors for unplanned immediate hysterectomy in PAS uterine-preserving surgeries.

Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) Clinical Practice Guidelines (2012) are predominantly based on expert opinion due to limited available evidence at the time, leaving room for interpretation and variation in practices. Evidence on the natural course of MEN1-related neuroendocrine tumours (NET) and the value of screening programs has increased and new imaging techniques have emerged. The aim of this study is to provide insight in the current practices of screening and surveillance for MEN1-related NETs in ENETS Centers of Excellence (CoEs).

The IsletTester mouse: an immunodeficient model with stable hyperglycemia for the study of human islets.

Diabetes

November 2024

Institute of Diabetes, Obesity, and Metabolism, Perelman School of Medicine, The University of Pennsylvania, 3400 Civic Center Boulevard, Philadelphia, PA, USA 19104.

Article Synopsis
  • The current gold standard for testing human islet or stem cell-derived β-like cell function involves implanting them in immunodeficient mice, but existing models have limitations like unstable hyperglycemia and high morbidity.
  • Researchers developed the IsletTester mouse using CRISPR-Cas9 to create a stable hyperglycemic model, showing normal life span and fertility with consistent glucose levels.
  • This new model allows for better study of human islet biology and serves as a valuable preclinical tool for evaluating stem cell-derived islet products.

Pediatr Pulmonol

January 2025

The Lautenberg Center for Immunology and Cancer Research, Institute of Medical Research Israel-Canada, Faculty of Medicine, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Jerusalem, Israel.

Background: Risk factors for progression of adenovirus (AdV)-associated bronchiolitis (AdV-B) to post-infectious bronchiolitis obliterans (PIBO) are poorly defined. We aimed to investigate this in a multicenter cohort.

Methods: A multicenter hospital-based analysis included children admitted with AdV-B in Jerusalem during 2016-2022.

Ileocolic intussusception is the most common cause of acute intestinal obstruction in infancy. Without rapid diagnosis and intervention, as well as collaboration among physicians from multiple disciplines, the patient's condition can deteriorate significantly, leading to ischemia and bowel necrosis. This position paper is the work of a committee of the Israel Pediatric Association, the Israel Pediatric Surgery Association, the Israel Radiological Association (Pediatric Imaging Section), and the Israel Association of Emergency Medicine (Pediatric Emergency Medicine Section) with the aim of establishing guidelines and thereby improving the treatment of children.

J Heart Lung Transplant

November 2024

Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine, Department of Medicine, New York University Grossman School of Medicine, New York, New York; NYU Langone Transplant Institute, NYU Langone Health, New York, New York. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Lower airway dysbiosis, characterized by an increase in specific bacteria, is linked to various severity grades of primary graft dysfunction (PGD) after lung transplantation, particularly in moderate and severe cases.
  • A study involving lower airway samples from 96 lung transplant recipients showed correlations between PGD severity and elevated levels of inflammatory markers, particularly neutrophils and specific cytokines, indicating a distinct inflammatory response.
  • Results suggest that microbial differences may influence host immune signaling, potentially exacerbating inflammation and contributing to PGD pathogenesis, highlighting the importance of microbial balance in lung health post-transplant.
