The ability to perform endoscopy procedures safely and effectively is a key aspect of quality clinical care in Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (PGHN). The aim of this survey, which was part of a global survey on PGHN training in Europe, was to assess endoscopy training opportunities provided across Europe. Responses to standardized questions related to endoscopy training were collected from training centers across Europe through the presidents/representatives of the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition National Societies from June 2016 to December 2019.

Predictors of infertility-related concerns in a Canadian survey of men and women seeking fertility treatment.

Patient Educ Couns

September 2020

Department of Psychiatry, McGill University, Montréal, Canada; Department of Psychiatry, Jewish General Hospital, Montréal, Canada; Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research, Montréal, Canada. Electronic address:

Objective: To examine if and how factors associated with infertility-related concerns and opportunity to discuss concerns differ between male and female fertility patients.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey of 313 female and 254 male patients recruited from Canadian fertility clinics. An online survey asked about sociodemographic characteristics, psychological distress, the severity of psychosocial concerns on a scale of 0 (not concerned) to 5 (very concerned) related to fertility treatment, and their opportunity and desire to discuss concerns with healthcare providers (HCPs).

Background: Given the complexity of infertility diagnoses and treatments and the convenience of the internet for finding health-related information, people undergoing infertility treatments often use Web-based resources to obtain infertility information and support. However, little is known about the types of information and support resources infertility patients search for on the internet and whether these resources meet their needs.

Objective: The aims of this study were to (1) examine what individual factors, namely, demographic characteristics and distress, are associated with searching the internet for different types of infertility-related information and support resources and (2) determine whether Web-based resources meet the needs of patients.

Background: A potential positive effect of probiotics in cystic fibrosis (CF) on fecal calprotectin (FCP), pulmonary exacerbations and weight has been described in small controlled trials.

Methods: A double-blind multicenter cross-over study (2 × 4 m) was performed looking at abdominal pain, nutritional status, pulmonary function, pulmonary exacerbation, FCP and lactulose/mannitol gut permeability test. Patients kept a diary with daily scoring of abdominal pain, stool frequency and consistency as well as treatment changes.

Patterns of gastrointestinal disease associated with mutations of CFTR.

Curr Gastroenterol Rep

June 2008

Pediatric Gastroenterology Unit, Division of Pediatrics, Hadassah University Hospitals, Hebrew University, POB 24035, Jerusalem, Israel.

This review focuses on the pathobiology of the gastrointestinal and hepatic manifestations of cystic fibrosis (CF) disease in relation to their genetic basis in mutations of the CF transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene. It reviews the nature of the CFTR protein, a categorization of the types of gene mutations underlying CF's various manifestations, and the ways in which absent or reduced CFTR produces various functional abnormalities in the different organs affected by CF. Subsequently, the particular organ-related clinical manifestations of CF directly associated with loss of CFTR function are addressed.

Background: Maternal transport, rather than neonatal transport, to tertiary care centers is generally advocated. Since a substantial number of premature deliveries still occur in hospitals with level I and level II nurseries, it is imperative to find means to improve their outcome.

Objectives: To compare the neonatal outcome (survival, intraventricular hemorrhage and bronchopulmonary dysplasia) of inborn and outborn very low birth weight infants, accounting for sociodemographic, obstetric and perinatal variables, with reference to earlier published data.

Previous studies have shown a high incidence of cardiovascular complications when noncardiac surgery (NCS) is performed after coronary stenting. No study has compared the outcomes of NCS after stenting compared with percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) alone. The records of all patients who underwent NCS within 3 months of percutaneous coronary intervention at our institution were reviewed for adverse clinical events with the end points of acute myocardial infarction, major bleeding, and death < or = 6 months after NCS.

Digital replantation teaching model in rats.

Microsurgery

February 2000

Departemnt of Plastic Surgery, Hadassah University Hospitals, Jerusalem, Israel.

Replant surgery is a complex procedure that requires advanced microsurgical skills and is usually performed as an emergency operation, lasting many hours. For these reasons, teaching replantation is difficult. Although teaching models exist, they are often too general or complicated for routine use and do not simulate the stages and the pitfalls of human replant surgery.

The effect of sphingosine on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-mediated protein kinase C (PKC) activation and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and nitric oxide (NO) production was studied in primary cultures of rat glial cells. Incubation of cells with LPS elicited translocation of PKC from the cytosolic to the membranous compartment, as shown by measuring PKC activity and by immunoblotting. Under these conditions, a sustained increase in both PGE2 and NO production was measured.
