Article Synopsis
  • Familial dysautonomia (FD) is a genetic condition affecting the autonomous and sensory nervous systems, leading to severe gastro-oesophageal reflux as a major complication.
  • Patients may develop megaoesophagus, causing issues like food and secretion retention that increase the risk of aspiration and serious respiratory problems.
  • A traditional case report demonstrates that reverse tubing of the oesophagus can significantly improve symptoms in FD patients and may be a viable treatment option for other oesophageal motility disorders.

Article Synopsis
  • - Maccabi Health Services launched the "Dermadetect" teledermatology app in 2019, aiming to analyze post-teleconsultation face-to-face consultations for differences in diagnoses and reasons for in-person visits.
  • - Out of 12,815 users, 30% had follow-up in-person consultations within 5 months, with 55% having the same indication as the teleconsultation, showing a high diagnosis concordance rate of 97.4%.
  • - The study suggests that a 30% follow-up consultation rate should be factored into reimbursement models and that low diagnosis discordance rates (1.4% for different diagnoses) can likely be overlooked.

Unveiling the relationship between WWOX and BRCA1 in mammary tumorigenicity and in DNA repair pathway selection.

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women worldwide, with the basal-like or triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) subtype being particularly aggressive and challenging to treat. Understanding the molecular mechanisms driving the development and progression of TNBC is essential. We previously showed that WW domain-containing oxidoreductase (WWOX) is commonly inactivated in TNBC and is implicated in the DNA damage response (DDR) through ATM and ATR activation.

We report the long-term follow-up of an immunocompetent patient who presented with slowly progressive endogenous endophthalmitis secondary to Streptococcus anginosus. A 46-year-old healthy man presented with a two-month history of right eye iritis. On examination, visual acuity was 20/60 with intraocular pressure of 6 mm Hg.

Introduction: Smoking is a collective and complex problem in the Palestinian-Arab community in Israel, where women and children are particularly vulnerable to exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS), especially in the home.

Aims And Methods: We undertook this study to better understand women's experiences with SHS exposure in the home and to identify pathways for intervention. Using the grounded theory approach, seven focus groups were conducted with 66 women in different localities across Israel.

Pregnancy trained decidual NK cells protect pregnancies from harmful Fusobacterium nucleatum infection.

PLoS Pathog

The Lautenberg Center for General and Tumor Immunology, Institute for Medical Research Israel-Canada, The Hebrew University Hadassah Medical School, Jerusalem, Israel.

Natural killer cells (NKs) found during pregnancy at the maternal-fetal interface named decidual (d)NKs, show signs of education following first pregnancy, resulting in better placentation and fetus-growth, hence termed pregnancy trained dNKs (PTdNKs). Here we show that PTdNKs provide increased protection of the fetus from Fusobacterium nucleatum (FN) infection. We demonstrate that PTdNKs secrete elevated amounts of the bacteriocidal protein granulysin (GNLY) upon incubation with FN compared to dNKs derived from first pregnancies, which leads to increased killing of FN.

Seven eponyms have been pioneered by dermatologists in Israel: Brenner's sign, Chanarin-Dorfman syndrome, granulated sweetener packet sign, isopathic phenomenon of Sagher, lanolin paradox, Nakar-Ingber disease, and Wolf's isotopic response. In addition, there are three id reactions described by Israeli dermatologists: leishmanid, pediculid, and scabid. There is also the acronym PEMPHIGUS, which stands for the causative reasons for pemphigus.

Objective: NR5A1 is a key regulator of sex differentiation and has been implicated in spleen development through transcription activation of TLX1. Concerns exist about hypo- or asplenism in individuals who have a difference of sex development (DSD) due to an NR5A1 disease-causing variant. We aimed to assess spleen anatomy and function in a clinical cohort of such individuals and in their asymptomatic family member carriers.

Article Synopsis
  • Drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) significantly impacts the lives of children and young adults, prompting a study on the effectiveness and safety of purified CBD for this population.
  • The study analyzed data from 139 patients, revealing that a significant majority experienced reduced seizure frequency after treatment, with 41.1% showing over a 50% reduction, along with improvements in alertness and speech.
  • While purified CBD proved to be well-tolerated and effective, common side effects included irritability and drowsiness, with previous treatments influencing the likelihood of seizure reduction.

Objective: Compassion fatigue, which consists of burnout and secondary traumatic stress, and compassion satisfaction are conceptualized as the negative and positive emotional reactions of working in the helping professions. In this study we examined the joint effect of oncologists' attachment orientations and empathy on their compassion fatigue and satisfaction.

Methods: Seventy-three oncologists completed a demographic questionnaire, the shortened version of the Experiences in Close Relationships scale, the Interpersonal Reactivity Index, and the Professional Quality of Life questionnaire.

Objective: To assess the humoral response to the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine among patients with spondyloarthritis (SpA) receiving secukinumab (SEC) compared to those receiving tumor necrosis factor inhibitors (TNFi) and immunocompetent controls.

Methods: Consecutive patients with psoriatic arthritis or axial SpA receiving SEC (n = 37) or TNFi (monotherapy, n = 109; + methotrexate [MTX], n = 16), immunocompetent controls (n = 122), and patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) receiving TNFi therapy (controls, n = 50) were vaccinated with 2 or 3 doses of the BNT162b2 vaccine. We evaluated humoral response, adverse events, and disease activity, and monitored for breakthrough coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) postvaccination.

  • The OXR1 gene plays a crucial role in various biological processes, and mutations in this gene have been linked to conditions like cerebellar atrophy and epilepsy in affected patients.
  • A novel mutation in OXR1 has been identified, leading to severe developmental issues, including cognitive disabilities and sensitivity to oxidative stress, which can be partially rescued by replacing the affected domain.
  • The study highlights the importance of OXR1 in regulating gene expression during neurodevelopment and its potential role in spatial-temporal histone arginine methylation in the brain.

Stimuli-Responsive Hydrogel Microcapsules Harnessing the COVID-19 Immune Response for Cancer Therapeutics.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

October 2023

Institute of Chemistry, The Minerva Center for Bio-hybrid Complex Systems, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Jerusalem, 91904, Israel.

The combination of gene therapy and immunotherapy concepts, along recent advances in DNA nanotechnology, have the potential to provide important tools for cancer therapies. We present the development of stimuli-responsive microcapsules, loaded with a viral immunogenetic agent, harnessing the immune response against the Coronavirus Disease 2019, COVID-19, to selectively attack liver cancer cells (hepatoma) or recognize breast cancer or hepatoma, by expression of green fluorescence protein, GFP. The pH-responsive microcapsules, modified with DNA-tetrahedra nanostructures, increased hepatoma permeation by 50 %.
