Background: Evidence from Western countries indicates that there are fundamental discrepancies between self-perceived illness of immigrants and the provision of health care, according to the Western bio-medical health service model. These need to be understood in the planning and implementation stages of public health care programs for new immigrants. The objectives of the present study were to investigate self-perceived versus clinically diagnosed dental and periodontal health status among immigrants from Ethiopia.

Open Dent J

June 2009

Laboratory of Bioanthropology and Ancient DNA, Hadassah School of Dental Medicine, Hebrew University, POB 12272, Jerusalem, 91120, Israel.

Objectives: This study was carried out to evaluate the extent of differences in mineralization of inner and outer enamel of the lower primary second molars of children with Down syndrome (DS) and Cerebral Palsy (CP) as revealed by acid treatment of exfoliated teeth. The results were compared to those obtained from a control group of healthy children.

Methods: The sample included 4 mandibular second molars from each group.

Objective: To test the hypotheses that (1) the distal angulation of unerupted mandibular premolar (MnP2) is significantly greater in children with palatally displaced canines (PDC) than in those in a control sample; and (2) delayed tooth formation is significantly more frequent in children with both malposed MnP2 and PDC than in children with PDC only.

Materials And Methods: We examined retrospectively panoramic radiographs from 43 patients with PDC who had no previous orthodontics. A control sample consisted of age- and sex-matched patients.

Previous studies have shown that whole cells of several periodontal pathogenic bacteria including Porphyromonas gingivalis may degrade the clinically used regeneration membranes Biomend Extend and Bio-Gide. Fractionation of P. gingivalis cells revealed that cell membrane-associated proteases are responsible for the in vitro degradation of the collagen membranes.

November 2008

Dept. of Oral Medicine, The Hebrew University, Hadassah School of Dental Medicine, Israel.

Graft versus host disease (GVHD) is an alloimmune inflammatory process, which results from a donor-origin cellular response against host tissues. The chronic syndrome of GVHD (cGVHD) occurs in approximately 50% of patients post hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and remains the leading cause of non-malignant mortality. Oral cavity is one of the most frequent sites involved in cGVHD, possibly only second to skin.

Objectives: Major risk factors of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) are environmental and can lead to DNA mutagenesis. Mismatch repair (MMR) system functions to repair small DNA lesions, which can be targeted for promoter hypermethylation. We therefore wanted to test whether hypermethylation of MMR genes (hMLH1, hMSH2) could contribute to oral carcinogenesis by correlating the information to patient clinical data.

Purpose: The aim of this retrospective study was to compare the postretention clinical appearance and the pulpal and periodontal status of surgically exposed and orthodontically aligned impacted maxillary central incisors, treated by 2 different surgical techniques-open eruption (OE) versus closed eruption (CE).

Patients And Methods: The OE group consisted of 11 patients, age 15 to 38 years. The 11 patients in the CE sample (aged 14-28 years) were selected from a larger group of patients treated by this method, by carefully matching them to the patients in the OE group, in terms of cause and height of impaction.

There are 2 major drawbacks to the classic orthodontic-surgical approach for resolution of impacted teeth in adults: appearance and duration of treatment. This case report illustrates the lingual orthodontic treatment of an adult with an impacted maxillary canine; absolute anchorage was achieved with a miniscrew placed in the palate. The combination of invisible appliances and a nondental anchorage system is particularly useful in adults and should make treatment available to more patients.

Good oral hygiene has always been the cornerstone of public and private dental health promotion. However, this has often been based upon incorrect assumptions. The public is not always willing and does not always need to change its oral health behavior to the same extent as that expected by the dental profession.
