Fundamental changes have occurred in dental services for children in Israel that are likely to affect workforce needs for dental hygienists. The aim of this study was to describe the employment situation and job satisfaction of a sample of dental hygienists in Israel, to estimate associated variables, and to discuss corresponding possible implications for training programs after these changes. An e-mailed questionnaire sent to all dental hygienists in the Israeli Dental Hygienists Association list included questions about respondents' demographic background, years of experience, working hours, desire to work in an alternative occupation, and sense that they were valued within the dental community.

A 66-year-old osteoporotic woman suffered from long-term mental paresthesia (numbness), facial swelling, and a nonhealing extraction site. Fulfilling the three clinical diagnostic criteria for bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ; exposed bone for at least 8 weeks, current bisphosphonate [risedronate] treatment, and no history of head and neck radiation therapy), she was diagnosed and treated accordingly. Nevertheless, a later histopathologic examination revealed malignant lymphoproliferative infiltration of large and intermediate cells.

The risk of osteonecrosis in patients treated with bisphosphonates is well known and guidelines intended to prevent this complication have been established and accepted. Bisphosphonate related osteonecrosis of the jaws (BRONJ) is a unique condition in which even past administration of medication may be of current and future relevance. We present a case of BRONJ in the maxilla after dental implant placement.

Conventional antibacterial treatment fails to eradicate biofilms associated with common infections of the oral cavity. Unlike chemical agents, which are less effective than anticipated, owing to diffusion limitations in biofilms, light is more effective on bacteria in biofilm than in suspension. Effectiveness depends also on the type and parameters of the light.

Objectives: Although the enhancement of plasma protein adsorption to titanium ( Ti ) following wetting has been recognized, the relationship between wettability and electrostatic forces has remained unclear. Thus, we have carried out a series of studies to determine the role of wettability and electrostatic forces on protein adsorption.
Methods: Titanium disks with different surfaces were wetted with a range of solutions, two of which contained divalent positive ions ( Ca and Mg ).

Objectives: The purpose of the present study was to critically evaluate the literature, describe the clinical and radiographic features of HD-SOD (hemimaxillofacial dysplasia/segmental odontomaxillary dysplasia), and describe one new case, involving a 12-year-old boy, with detailed radiological, clinical, and histologic characteristics.
Methods: Thirty-six cases published between 1987 and 2010, together with the present case, were evaluated according to criteria that included gender, age, location of the lesion, findings, and symptoms.
Results: We found that the lesion is discovered mainly in the first decade of life (71%), and has a male predilection (64%, 23/64).

Excessive bone resorption is frequently associated with chronic infections and inflammatory diseases. Whereas T cells were demonstrated to facilitate osteoclastogenesis in such diseases, the role of dendritic cells, the most potent activators of naive T cells, remains unclear. Using a model involving inflammation-driven alveolar bone loss attributable to infection, we showed that in vivo ablation of Langerhans cells (LCs) resulted in enhanced bone loss.

Sjögren's syndrome (SjS) is one of the most common autoimmune rheumatic diseases, clinically characterized by xerostomia and keratoconjunctivitis sicca. We investigated the following controversial topics: (i) Do we have reliable ways of assessing saliva production? (ii) How important are the quantity and quality of saliva? (iii) Are only anti-SSA/Ro and anti-SSB/La relevant for the diagnosis of SjS? (iv) Are the American-European Consensus criteria (AECC) the best way to diagnose SjS? Results from literature searches suggested the following: (i) Despite the fact that numerous tests are available to assess salivation rates, direct comparisons among them are scarce with little evidence to suggest one best test. (ii) Recent developments highlight the importance of investigating the composition of saliva.

Host defense peptides are innate immune effectors that possess both bactericidal activities and immunomodulatory functions. Deficiency in the human host defense peptide LL-37 has previously been correlated with severe periodontal disease. Treponema denticola is an oral anaerobic spirochete closely associated with the pathogenesis of periodontal disease.
