Enterococcal Central Nervous System Infections in Children: A 22 Years' Experience in a Tertiary Center and Review of the Literature.

Background: Enterococcal meningitis in children is rare, and its clinical presentation, laboratory characteristics and outcomes are not well defined.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of Enterococcal meningitis cases during 2002-2023 at our tertiary center.

Results: We identified 10 cases in children 2 weeks to 15 years old (median age: 8 months).

Applicability of Redirecting Artemisinins for New Targets.

Employing new therapeutic indications for drugs that are already approved for human use has obvious advantages, including reduced costs and timelines, because some routine steps of drug development and regulation are not required. This work concentrates on the redirection of artemisinins (ARTS) that already are approved for clinical use, or investigated, for malaria treatment. Several mechanisms of action are suggested for ARTS, among which only a few have been successfully examined in vivo, mainly the induction of oxidant stress and anti-inflammatory effects.

Single- Versus Dual-Chamber Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator for Primary Prevention of Sudden Cardiac Death in the United States.

Background Routine addition of an atrial lead during an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) implantation for primary prevention of sudden cardiac death, in patients without pacing indications, was not shown beneficial in contemporary studies. We aimed to investigate the use and safety of single- versus dual-chamber ICD implantations in these patients. Methods and Results Using the National Inpatient Sample database, we identified patients with no pacing indications who underwent primary-prevention ICD implantation in the United States between 2015 and 2019.

Rationale And Objectives: Few reports have studied lung aeration and perfusion in normal lungs, COVID-19, and ARDS from other causes (NC-ARDS) using dual-energy computed tomography pulmonary angiograms (DE-CTPA). To describe lung aeration and blood-volume distribution using DE-CTPAs of patients with NC-ARDS, COVID-19, and controls with a normal DE-CTPA ("healthy lungs"). We hypothesized that each of these conditions has unique ranges of aeration and pulmonary blood volumes.

Methods and Results We conducted a population-based, historical cohort study of 105 656 people aged 45 to 80 with pharmacologically treated diabetes and who were free of cardiac disease in 2010. Data were retrieved from electronic medical records of the 4 Israeli health maintenance organizations.

Methods and Results We compared patients who received mTOR inhibitors within the first 2 years after heart transplantation to patients who did not by inquiring the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) database between 2010 and 2018. The primary end point was all-cause mortality with retransplantation as a competing event.

Research Question: What are the reproductive choices and retrospective reflections of women at least 4 years after planned oocyte cryopreservation (POC)?

Design: This was an internet survey, using the REDCap application, of women who underwent POC, at a single-centre university-affiliated IVF unit, 4-8 years before the survey. The questionnaire addressed reproductive choices and outcomes following POC.

Results: Seventy-nine women who underwent POC during 2011-2014 were invited to participate, and 70 (89%) responded.

An artificial intelligence system using machine-learning for automatic detection and classification of dental restorations in panoramic radiography.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to develop a computer vision algorithm based on artificial intelligence, designed to automatically detect and classify various dental restorations on panoramic radiographs.

Study Design: A total of 738 dental restorations in 83 anonymized panoramic images were analyzed. Images were automatically cropped to obtain the region of interest containing maxillary and mandibular alveolar ridges.

Background: Sonographic estimated fetal weight is performed by measuring the fetal organs' biometry and introducing the data into a formula. The calculated value is then compared with reference charts and serves as a critical component in pregnancy follow-up. Ideally the charts should be appropriate to the specific population.

Purpose: To describe whether nurses fully implement their scope of practice; nurses' perceptions of future practice implementation; and the association between scope of practice implementation with professional autonomy and self-efficacy.

Design: A descriptive correlational study was conducted using a convenience sample of 145 registered nurses with post-basic certification from two Israeli university hospitals, from May 2012 to September 2013.

Molteno implants in children.

We report our experience with Molteno implants in 27 eyes of 20 children with glaucoma. Associated ocular findings included Sturge Weber syndrome (one patient), aniridia and retinoschisis (one patient), aphakia (seven patients, eight eyes), rubella syndrome (two patients), Peters anomaly (one patient), and Treacher Collins syndrome (one patient). Fifteen eyes received a single-plate implant, and 12 eyes received a double-plate implant in two stages.
