Purpose: In aging populations, the Global Initiative for Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) spirometry threshold may misclassify normal spirometry as airflow limitation. The Global Lung Initiative (GLI) method provides age-adjusted criteria. We investigated how the use of GOLD or GLI thresholds in an algorithm affects the classification of elderly smokers into COPD risk phenotypes.

Background: Hepatic veno-occlusive disease (VOD) is a life-threatening complication of hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) and is categorized as a transplant-related, systemic endothelial disease. Severe VOD can lead to multi-organ dysfunction (MOF) and is associated with a high mortality rate.
Objective: To evaluate the incidence of VOD in children after HCT and analyze the outcomes and risk factors associated with increased mortality.

Purpose: Macular edema is a known complication following complicated retinal detachment repair with silicone oil (SiO) tamponade. Limited previous research has not led to a consensus regarding the safety and efficacy of intra-SiO injections. Consequently, we aim to present our case series study on intra-SiO injections for postoperative macular edema.

Background: Acute mesenteric venous thrombosis (MVT) is rarely suspected as primary diagnosis in emergency departments and still carries an in-hospital mortality rate of above 20%.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to find differences in clinical and laboratory markers between patients with acute MVT and a control group of suspected but confirmed as not having any type of acute mesenteric ischaemia (AMI).
Design: Data was retrieved from the AMESI (Acute MESenteric Ischaemia) study.

: This study aimed to describe the clinical, optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA) findings and characteristics in patients with perifoveal exudative vascular anomalous complex (PEVAC) and compare the macular vascular density with the age-matched control group. : We conducted a case-control study to compare demographic information, clinical observations, and OCT/OCTA findings in eyes with PEVAC ( = 5 eyes in 5 patients) and a control group of subjects matched for age ( = 9). The Advanced Retina Imaging (ARI) network algorithms were utilized to evaluate OCTA observations.

: Osteoporotic hip fractures in cirrhotic subjects are associated with increased post-fracture mortality. Our aim was to identify unfavorable factors that were associated with increased post-fracture mortality. : We employed a retrospective evaluation of the short- and long-term prognosis of cirrhotic patients that were admitted with a hip fracture to our institution.

Retinal vascular occlusions are a significant cause of visual impairment in older adults, resulting in ischemic retinal damage and sudden vision loss. This study evaluates the retinal, optic nerve head (ONH), and choroidal capillary networks in chronic and acute-on-chronic hypoxia compared to normal controls using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A). We evaluated a prospective study including twenty patients in the hypoxic group (mean age 61.

Background: Inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) are clinically complex and genetically heterogeneous visual impairment disorders with varying penetrance and severity. Disease-causing variants in at least 289 nuclear and mitochondrial genes have been implicated in their pathogenesis.
Methods: Whole exome sequencing results were analyzed using established pipelines and the results were further confirmed by Sanger sequencing and minigene splicing assay.

We examined the associations between attachment anxiety, attachment avoidance, and attachment to group (to Israel) and mental health scores. The study used a community sample of 434 participants in response to the October 7th attack on Israel. Additionally, we explored the potential mechanisms linking these attachment patterns to mental health scores.

Introduction: Universal newborn hearing screening has been successfully implemented in many places around the world, and it is recommended that cases with risk factors for hearing loss be followed-up regardless of hearing screening results. However, there is a need for clarity regarding the recommended rate of follow-up and which tests should be performed. The aim of this study was to assess the audiologic follow-up program for the group with risk factors.

Cultural traditions in Israel's Bedouin-Arab community encourage and permit men to take up to four wives, a practice supported by Islamic teachings. Despite legal prohibitions against polygyny in Israel, such marriages remain common and have profound effects on women, children, and broader society. This study explores how traditional notions of masculinity and positive attitudes toward polygyny influence young Bedouin men's reactions to a hypothetical scenario in which their wife refuses to accept a polygynous marriage as a threat to men's ego and pride.

Objective: Placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) is a term used to describe trophoblast invasion into the uterine wall. The condition can be FATAL: at labor due to a lack of spontaneous separation of the placenta from the uterine wall, leading to severe hemorrhage. In this study, we aim to evaluate preoperative risk factors for unplanned immediate hysterectomy in PAS uterine-preserving surgeries.

Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) Clinical Practice Guidelines (2012) are predominantly based on expert opinion due to limited available evidence at the time, leaving room for interpretation and variation in practices. Evidence on the natural course of MEN1-related neuroendocrine tumours (NET) and the value of screening programs has increased and new imaging techniques have emerged. The aim of this study is to provide insight in the current practices of screening and surveillance for MEN1-related NETs in ENETS Centers of Excellence (CoEs).

Purpose: Adult-onset foveomacular vitelliform dystrophy (AFVD) shares phenotypic similarities with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The genetic factors associated with AFVD are unknown in >80% of cases. This study evaluated the association of known AMD genetic risk variants with AFVD and compared systemic complement activation in these conditions.

Among the dominant pathogenic genes (PG) in breast cancer are BRCA1/2. Knowing whether a patient carry one of these alterations is meaningful as it affects management. A substantial question is to what extent are the genomic profile of a tumor and its characteristics affected by the germline profile of BRCA1/2 and what is the possible contribution of other environmental factors.

Immunotherapy has revolutionized cancer treatment, but the limited availability of tumor-specific neoantigens still remains a challenge. The potential of alternative mRNA splicing-derived neoantigens as a source of new immunotherapy targets has gained significant attention. Tumors exhibit unique splicing changes and splicing factor mutations which are prevalent in various cancers and play a crucial role in neoantigen production.

The interaction between proteins and RNA is crucial for regulating gene expression, with dysregulation often linked to diseases such as cancer. The RNA-binding protein (RBP) Lin28 inhibits the tumor suppressor microRNA (miRNA) let-7, making it a significant oncogenic factor in tumor progression and metastasis. In this study, a small molecule is used that binds Lin28 and blocks its inhibition of let-7.
