Introduction: Medical misinformation regarding COVID-19 immunization remains rampant and a public concern, and as such, there is a need for national studies evaluating the immunization's safety profile. We sought to quantify and analyze urologic adverse events and symptoms after COVID-19 immunization, compare these events reported between COVID-19 vaccine types, and compare these events reported following COVID-19 immunization relative to those reported following other immunizations.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective case-control disproportionality analysis by querying the Food and Drug Administration Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System for all reported symptoms following COVID-19 immunization through December 23, 2022, as well as for all non-COVID immunizations.

A phase 1 study of mebendazole with bevacizumab and irinotecan in high-grade gliomas.

Pediatr Blood Cancer

April 2024

Division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology and Stem Cell Transplant, Cohen Children's Medical Center, New Hyde Park, New York, USA.

Background: High-grade gliomas (HGG) have a dismal prognosis despite multimodal therapy. Mebendazole is an anti-helminthic benzimidazole that has demonstrated efficacy in numerous in vitro cancer models, and is able to cross the blood-brain barrier. We conducted a phase 1 trial (NCT01837862) to evaluate the safety of mebendazole in combination with bevacizumab and irinotecan in children and young adults with HGG.

sequence type ST410 is an emerging carbapenemase-producing multidrug-resistant (MDR) high-risk One-Health clone with the potential to significantly increase carbapenem resistance among . ST410 belongs to two clades (ST410-A and ST410-B) and three subclades (ST410-B1, ST410-B2, and ST410-B3). After a switch between clades ST410-A and ST410-B1, ST410-B2 and ST410-B3 subclades showed a stepwise progression toward developing MDR.

Cardiometabolic risk factor clustering in persons with spinal cord injury: A principal component analysis approach.

J Spinal Cord Med

September 2024

Department of Veterans Affairs Rehabilitation Research & Development Service National Center for the Medical Consequences of Spinal Cord Injury, James J. Peters Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Bronx, New York, USA.

Context/objective: To identify cardiometabolic (CM) measurements that cluster to confer increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk using principal component analysis (PCA) in a cohort of chronic spinal cord injury (SCI) and healthy non-SCI individuals.

Approach: A cross-sectional study was performed in ninety-eight non-ambulatory men with chronic SCI and fifty-one healthy non-SCI individuals (ambulatory comparison group). Fasting blood samples were obtained for the following CM biomarkers: lipid, lipoprotein particle, fasting glucose and insulin concentrations, leptin, adiponectin, and markers of inflammation.

Proliferative glomerulonephritis with monoclonal immunoglobulin (mIg) deposits (PGNMID) is a rare glomerular disease characterized by glomerular deposits of mIg. The pathogenesis of PGNMID without circulating mIg is poorly understood but a role for aberrant immune response to infection or another exogenous stimulus has been proposed. We describe a unique case of PGNMID that presented with multiple episodes of acute kidney injury, nephritic syndrome, and hypocomplementemia, associated with self-limited febrile illnesses or COVID-19 vaccination.

Background: We have shown that use of Team-based learning (TBL) in a first-year Infectious Diseases (ID) course improved final examination and course performance. Therefore, we implemented TBL in the second-year Women's Health (WH) course to improve acquisition of course content. We hypothesized that prior experience with TBL in the first-year of medical school would lead to a strong correlation between TBL performance in the first and second years.

Objective: To perform a systematic review to investigate the common presenting symptoms of barosinusitis, the incidence of those findings, the methods for diagnosis, as well as the medical and surgical treatment options.

Methods: A review of PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library for articles published between 1967 and 2020 was conducted with the following search term: aerosinusitis OR "sinus squeeze" OR barosinusitis OR (barotrauma AND sinusitis) OR (barotrauma AND rhinosinusitis). Twenty-seven articles encompassing 232 patients met inclusion criteria and were queried for demographics, etiology, presentation, and medical and surgical treatments.

Management of anticoagulation in pregnant women with venous thromboembolism: An international survey of clinical practice.

Thromb Res

February 2022

Division of General Internal Medicine, Department of Medicine, Jewish General Hospital, McGill University, Montreal, Canada; Centre for Clinical Epidemiology of the Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research, Jewish General Hospital, Montreal, Canada. Electronic address:

Introduction: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is an important cause of maternal morbidity and mortality. During pregnancy, VTE is treated with low-molecular-weight-heparin (LMWH). Studies assessing the optimal duration and peripartum management of therapeutic anticoagulation are lacking.

Background: Incentives for preparation and participation in case-based (CBL) and team-based learning (TBL) differ by virtue of differences in assessment, allowing us to evaluate the role these incentives play in preparation and participation in these activities as well as overall course performance.

Methods: Weekly TBL and CBL participation and performance as well as performance on the course final examination were recorded. Student participation was quantified and correlated with: (1) CBL preparation, participation, teamwork and completion of learning objectives scores, and (2) TBL individual readiness assurance test (iRAT) scores.

The expanding worldwide burden of colorectal cancer (CRC) is a significant public health issue. Understanding the shift in the geo-demographic, socioeconomic, environmental, and biogenetic distribution of CRC is paramount. The Human Development Index (HDI) measuring life expectancy, education, and gross national income is a composite index comparing health outcomes between countries.

"" (Suborne 2007). The rising rate of the global aging population is predicted to create a health care crisis within the next three decades. Vulnerable older adults suffer from multiple chronic conditions (MCCs) in addition to cognitive and physical decline during the process of aging resulting in an inability to optimally achieve self-management.

In 2018, approximately 18 million people worldwide were diagnosed with cancer and are predicted to double by 2040. The global quality chasm in improving health care worldwide requires "systems thinking" as the key to success. Aligning the goal around person-centered care captures the total needs of care of a population and not just disease categories.

Brachiocephalic arteriovenous fistulas (AVF) makeup approximately one third of prevalent dialysis vascular accesses. The most common cause of malfunction with this access is cephalic arch stenosis (CAS). The accepted requirement for treatment of a venous stenosis lesion is ⩾50% stenosis associated with hemodynamically abnormalities.

Purpose Of Review: Allergic rhinoconjunctivitis is one of the most common ocular surface allergic inflammatory conditions seen in primary care that impacts patient's quality of life. Allergic conjunctivitis is increasingly being recognized as its own symptom complex that negatively impacts patient's quality of life separate from allergic rhinitis. This article reviews the psychosocial impact of ocular surface allergic inflammatory disorders (namely seasonal allergic conjunctivitis, ocular allergy, perennial allergic conjunctivitis, and atopic keratoconjunctivitis) on adult and pediatric populations.
