Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers analyzed cancerous lung tissue and corresponding non-cancerous tissue, along with saliva and plasma samples from lung cancer patients and healthy controls, finding several metabolites that differed significantly between groups.
  • * A specific model using 12 unique salivary metabolites showed promise in distinguishing lung cancer patients from controls, with a notable discriminative ability of one metabolite, N-acetylspermidine, which may enhance non-invasive screening methods for the disease.

The patient was a 46-year-old women who was treated for axillary lymph node recurrence of breast cancer by a variety of methods, including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, but who experienced recurrences in the cervical and mediastinal lymph nodes and skin, and developed hydrothorax and ascites. Although the recurrent foci responded to 4 cycles of CAF chemotherapy, there was concern that the foci would become refractory or resistant to chemotherapy. The administration of paclitaxel was therefore initiated.

A study was conducted to evaluate the outcomes of 79 patients with early stage lung cancer diagnosed according to the following criteria. Central tumors were located in the segmental bronchi, or more proximally, and tumor invasion was limited to the bronchial wall without lymph node or distant metastases. Peripheral tumors were located distal to the subsegmental bronchi and were less than 2 cm in greatest dimension, and invasion was limited to the visceral pleura, with no lymph node or distant metastases.

June 1998

Department of Thoracic Surgery, Hachioji Medical Center of Tokyo Medical College, 1163 Tate-Machi, Hachioji, Tokyo 193-0944, Japan.

The characteristics and outcomes of resected adenocarcinoma with cavity formation were studied in 7 cases, which were 14.9% of all 47 resected adenocarcinomas in the past three years. Tumor size was less than 3 cm in diameter in 3 cases, 3 to 5 cm in 2 and more than 5 cm in 2.

In this report, 15 cases using straight staple (group A) and 35 cases using barbed staple (group B) were compared for the purpose of investigating efficacy for median sternal closure. The staples were placed by a Stapilizer powered metaphyseal staple system following partial transsternal fixation with two wires. As a means of assessing the status of back out, which is a major cause of poor fixation, the back out rate (BOR) was measured on lateral sternal radiographies.

The right middle lobe is unique because it is surrounded by two other lobes and the pericardium, and it is the smallest lobe. The proper surgical treatment and prognosis for cancer of the right middle lobe has not been definitively established. In order to clarify its prognosis and the best operative technique, 31 surgically treated patients with lung cancer of the right middle lobe were studied clinically and pathologically.

We undertook a randomized trial in patients with advanced colorectal cancer, comparing 5-fluorouracil and leucovorin versus combination of these agents with additional cisplatin. Between July 1991 and October 1994, 21 patients with advanced measurable colorectal cancer previously unexposed to chemotherapy were randomly assigned to treatment with either 5-FU (500-750 mg/body) and LV (30 mg/body) for 5 days, or the combination of 5-FU and LV in the same daily dose plus cisplatin (10 mg/body). The overall responses were 30% and 36.

We report herein the case of a 59-year-old asymptomatic man who was referred to our department for investigation of an abnormal shadow detected on a routine chest roentogenogram. Computed tomography (CT) showed an infiltrative shadow and air bronchogram in the right middle lobe without mediastinal lymphadenopathy, and a right middle lobectomy was performed with hilar and interlobar lymph node excision. Microscopically, the tumor consisted of small lymphoid cells without atypia, admixed with neutrophils and other mononuclear cells, but there was no invasion of the bronchial cartilage or visceral pleura, or any lymph node involvement.

Typical renal histological findings of Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) indicate a pauciimmune focal necrotizing glomerulonephritis with periglomerular granuloma and marked inflammatory cell infiltration in the interstitium. The recognition of the association between C (proteinase-3) anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (C [PR-3] ANCA) and WG is the only tool available to aid in the assessment of disease activity. Stage adapted immunosuppressive therapy (glucocorticoids and cyclophosphamide) has significantly altered the outcome of this once fatal disease.

There are many reports of the use of stellate ganglion block (SGB) for the climacteric psychosis, which is considered to be sympathicotonic response to stress. We experienced three cases of the SGB therapy for the climacteric psychosis. We performed SGB three times per week by 1% lidocaine 5 ml, and observed improvements of the symptoms after doing SGB for five times.
