Objectives: Behçet's disease tends to be more severe in men than women. This study was undertaken to investigate sex-specific genetic effects in Behçet's disease.

Methods: A total of 1762 male and 1216 female patients with Behçet's disease from six diverse populations were studied, with the majority of patients of Turkish origin.

Study Design: A multicenter retrospective review of consecutive series of patients.

Objective: Long-term experience with using the magnetically controlled growing rods (MCGR) to treat patients with deformity in the growing spine to the conclusion of treatment with posterior spine fusion.

Summary Of Background Data: MCGR treatment for growing spine gained popularity with paucity of long-term follow up data.

Article Synopsis
  • Behçet's disease is a complex inflammatory condition with unclear causes, and this study aimed to explore its genetic connections within a diverse population.* -
  • The study included 9,444 participants from 7 backgrounds and found 2 new genetic risk markers associated with the disease, along with confirming 6 previously known ones.* -
  • These results suggest significant genetic influences across different ethnicities and open avenues for further research into the underlying mechanisms of Behçet's disease.*

Extended spectrum β-lactamase producing enterobacteriaceae: carbapenem sparing options.

Expert Rev Anti Infect Ther

December 2019

Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology, Hacettepe University Sıhhıye Campus, Sihhiye, Ankara, Turkey.

: Carbapenems have an important place in our antibiotic armamentarium and have been trusted to effectively treat infections caused by ESBL-producing for many years. However, the utility of carbapenems has been compromised by the emergence of resistance especially in . Therefore, carbapenem-sparing alternative antibiotics are of extreme importance in clinical practice.

Aim: To compare the effect of furcal perforations of various sizes on the biomechanical response of mandibular first molars with or without periodontal bone loss at the furcal region via three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis (FEA).

Methodology: The 3D geometric basic model was reconstructed from the micro-computed tomographic images of an extracted mandibular first molar. Five different models were constructed from this molar in group 1 as follows: intact molar model, root filled (RCF) model and three models with furcal perforations (1, 2 and 3 mm in diameter) repaired with a calcium silicate-based cement (CSC).

In this study we aimed to compare the findings of coronary dual-source computed tomography angiography of myocardial bridges with cadaveric dissections. Forty-one isolated, non-damaged fresh sheep hearts were used in this study. Myocardial bridges of the anterior interventricular branch of the left coronary artery were demonstrated and analyzed by a coronary dual-source computed tomography angiography.

Radiation sterilization of new drug delivery systems.

Interv Med Appl Sci

June 2014

Department of Radiopharmacy, Faculty of Pharmacy, Hacettepe University Sıhhiye, Ankara Turkey.

Radiation sterilization has now become a commonly used method for sterilization of several active ingredients in drugs or drug delivery systems containing these substances. In this context, many applications have been performed on the human products that are required to be sterile, as well as on pharmaceutical products prepared to be developed. The new drug delivery systems designed to deliver the medication to the target tissue or organ, such as microspheres, nanospheres, microemulsion, and liposomal systems, have been sterilized by gamma (γ) and beta (β) rays, and more recently, by e-beam sterilization.

This study assessed the effects of pregnancy and lactation on the morphology of the dentine tubules and external enamel surface of rat incisor teeth using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) system. Twenty-four female Wistar rats were divided into three groups; group A rats were at the end of pregnancy, group B rats were in the post-lactation period and group C rats, the control group, were unmated. The outer enamel surface and openings of the dentine tubules at the neck regions of the incisors were observed under the SEM and photographed.

Unlabelled: Hypertrophic osteoarthropathy (HOA) is characterized by clubbing, periosteal new bone formation and polyarthritis. The pathogenesis of clubbing involves an increased expression of platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) from the digitally lodged platelet clumps, which bypass the pulmonary capillary network as a result of various systemic disorders. Intrathoracic neoplasms are rare causes of HOA in children.

Objective: In this study, acute normovolemic hemodilution (ANH) and hypervolemic hemodilution (HHD) were compared with no hemodilution with regards to the effectiveness in blood usage and coagulation parameters.

Methods: The study was performed from February to August 2001 at Hacettepe University Hospital, Ankara, Turkey. Thirty patients undergoing hip arthroplasty surgery were prospectively randomized into: ANH group [autologous blood 15 mL kg(-1) was withdrawn and replaced by 6% hydroxyethylstarch (HES)] or HHD group (HES was administered without removal of any autologous blood) or the control group (no hemodilution).

Altered levels of high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), and very-low density lipoprotein (VLDL), as well as apolipoproteins have been previously described in rheumatoid arthritis patients. We have attempted to evaluate the serum triglyceride, total cholesterol, cholesterol in DHL, LDL, apolipoprotein A1 (apo-A1) and apolipoprotein B (apo-B) levels in juvenile chronic arthritis (JCA) and to correlate them with CRP and ESR in the active and non-active stages of JCA. A total of 37 children no fulfilled ARA criteria for the diagnosis of JCA were studied.
