Aflatoxins are immunosuppressive and carcinogenic secondary metabolites, produced by the filamentous ascomycete , that are hazardous to animal and human health. In this study, we show that multiplexed host-induced gene silencing (HIGS) of genes essential for fungal sporulation and aflatoxin production (, , , and confers enhanced resistance to infection and aflatoxin contamination in groundnut (<20 ppb). Comparative proteomic analysis of contrasting groundnut genotypes (WT and near-isogenic HIGS lines) supported a better understanding of the molecular processes underlying the induced resistance and identified several groundnut metabolites that might play a significant role in resistance to infection and aflatoxin contamination.

Phylogenetic Analyses of Microbial Hydrolytic Dehalogenases Reveal Polyphyletic Origin.

Indian J Microbiol

December 2022

The Energy Resources Institute, India Habitat Center Complex, Lodhi Road, New Delhi, Delhi 110003 India.

Unlabelled: Hydrolytic dehalogenases form an important class of dehalogenases that include haloacid dehalogenase, haloalkane dehalogenase, haloacetate dehalogenase, and atrazine chlorohydrolase. These enzymes are involved in biodegradation of various environmental pollutants and therefore it is important to understand their phylogeny. In the present study, it was found that the enzymes haloalkane and haloacetate dehalogenases share a common ancestry with enzymes such as carboxyesterase, epoxide hydrolase, and lipases, which can be traced to ancestral α/β hydrolase fold enzyme.

Objectives: The CHARM2 (Counseling Husbands and wives to Achieve Reproductive Health and Marital Equity) intervention engages health care providers to deliver gender-equity and family planning sessions to couples using a person-centered shared decision-making approach for contraception counseling. We previously showed that the intervention improved contraceptive use at 9-month follow-up. We sought to assess whether the intervention was further associated with the quality of care reported by participants and whether the quality of care reported mediated the effect of the intervention on contraceptive use.

Women's contraceptive decision-making control is crucial for reproductive autonomy, but research largely relies on the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) measure which asks who is involved with decision-making. In India, this typically assesses joint decision-making or male engagement. Newer measures emphasize female agency.

Several ternary "Janus" metal dichalcogenides such as {Mo,Zr,Pt}-SSe have emerged as candidates with significant potential for optoelectronic, piezoelectric, and thermoelectric applications. SnSSe, a natural option to explore as a thermoelectric given that its "parent" structures are SnS and SnSe has, however, only recently been shown to be mechanically stable. Here, we calculate the lattice thermal conductivities of the Janus SnSSe monolayer along with those of its parent dicalchogenides.

Reversible Pressure-Induced Partial Phase Transition in Few-Layer Black Phosphorus.

Nano Lett

August 2020

Centre d'Elaboration des Matériaux et d'Etudes Structurales (CEMES), UPR-8011 CNRS, Université de Toulouse, 31055 Toulouse, France.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers are studying how layered black phosphorus (BP) changes structure under mechanical stress, which is important for its use in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) in tough environments.
  • Using high-pressure Raman spectroscopy, they found that when BP is subjected to around 4.2 GPa of pressure, it transitions from an orthorhombic structure to a rhombohedral one (also known as blue phosphorus).
  • The experiment showed that the phase change is reversible, and computational analysis helped explain how and why these structural changes occur under pressure, revealing a state where both BP and blue phosphorus can exist simultaneously.

The present work describes synthesis, detailed characterization, and application of bare and surfactant-modified titania nanomaterials (NMs) for various wastewater treatment applications as individual cases like cadmium (Cd) removal, methylene blue (MB) dye degradation, and treatment of real textile and dyeing industry effluent. These NMs are used as adsorbents and photocatalysts in an indegenously developed end-to-end treatment process and a photocatalytic reactor for treatment of textile wastewater. The used NMs are suitably filtered and recovered for reuse; however, still this work focusses on the extent of potential risk and environmental safety of these engineered NMs towards seed germination and plant growth, in the event they escape wastewater treatment plants and reach out to natural water bodies and soil systems, accumulate over a period of time, and comes in contact with plant species.
