Background: Our population-based study has previously shown that being born in winter or spring was associated with adult-onset asthma. The aim was to study if season of birth (SOB) is associated with airway allergy and related diseases: NSAID exacerbated respiratory disease (N-ERD), asthma, allergic rhinitis (AR), nonallergic rhinitis (NAR), chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) and CRS without nasal polyps (CRSsNP) in Finland.

Methods: A randomly sampled retrospective registry-based follow-up data (n = 74,868) of patients visiting Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa (HUS) in Finland was used.

Protein glycosylation responds sensitively to disease states. It is implicated in every hallmark of cancer and has recently started to be considered as a hallmark itself. Changes in N-glycosylation microheterogeneity are more dramatic than those of protein expression due to the non-template nature of protein glycosylation.

Background: The aim was to evaluate the relative proportion of Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug exacerbated respiratory disease (NERD) and other comorbidities, and their impact on the burden of outpatient visits due to allergic rhinitis (AR), non-allergic rhinitis (NAR), acute rhinosinusitis (ARS), and chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) and without (CRSsNP).

Methods: We used hospital registry data of a random sample of 5080 rhinitis/rhinosinusitis patients diagnosed during 2005-2019. International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD10) diagnoses, visits, and other factors were collected from electronic health records by using information extraction and data processing methods.

P-cadherin (CDH3) is a cell-to-cell adhesion molecule that regulates several cellular homeostatic processes in normal tissues. Lack of CDH3 expression is associated with aggressive behavior in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Previous studies have shown that CDH3 is downregulated in high-grade OSCC and its reduced expression is predictive for poorer survival.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) stands for 10% of the worldwide cancer burden and has recently become the second most common cause of cancer death. The 5-year survival rate depends mainly on stage at diagnosis. Mass spectrometric proteomic analysis is widely used to study the plasma proteome, which is complex and contains multitudes of proteins.

Objective: Reports on sinonasal oncocytic papilloma (SNOP) are scarce. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the clinical features of this rarest form of sinonasal papilloma with special emphasis on the pattern of recurrences and on the potential factors predicting them.

Study Design: Retrospective study.

We investigated serum and saliva concentrations of matrix metalloproteinases, MMP-8, MMP-9, and MMP-13, and their tissue inhibitor TIMP-1, in a group of patients with and without periodontitis from Sweden. The hypothesis was that these biomarkers are higher in the periodontitis patients. Ninety patients participated in this cross-sectional study.

Oncolytic adenoviruses (Onc.Ads) produce significant antitumor effects but as single agents they rarely eliminate tumors. Investigators have therefore incorporated sequences into these vectors that encode immunomodulatory molecules to enhance antitumor immunity.

Gastrointestinal and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) arise from disseminated neuroendocrine cells, expressing general and specific neuroendocrine markers. The World Health Organization 2010 classification of NETs is based on grading them according to the proliferation index (PI), which is determined by immunohistochemical staining of the nuclear antigen Ki-67. The classification introduces Ki-67 as the most important criterion for tumor grading, influencing patients' prognoses and the choice of treatment.

Angiogenesis, the growth of new blood vessels from pre-existing vasculature, is a key process in several pathological conditions, including tumour growth and age-related macular degeneration. Vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs) stimulate angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis by activating VEGF receptor (VEGFR) tyrosine kinases in endothelial cells. VEGFR-3 (also known as FLT-4) is present in all endothelia during development, and in the adult it becomes restricted to the lymphatic endothelium.

The regenerating protein (Reg)-like protein (RELP, also known as Reg IV) is a recently characterized fourth member of the human Reg protein family. The Reg proteins are small, about 20-kD-sized, secretory proteins of C-lectin type. The previously known Reg proteins have been functionally implicated in regeneration, proliferation, and differentiation of the pancreas, liver, and gastrointestinal mucosa.

We studied the relationship between proliferation, differentiation, and the expression of high-mobility-group protein 17 (HMG-17) during metanephric kidney development. Proliferating cells were found homogenously throughout the early kidney rudiment. The expression pattern of HMG-17 mRNA, on the other hand, was distinctly uneven: In the undifferentiated mesenchyme, the cells in the cranial "tail" part of the mesenchyme showed only a weak signal, whereas a group of cells lying close to the tip of the ureteric bud showed strong HMG-17 expression.

L-selectin-dependent lymphocyte extravasation is a hallmark of acute heart allograft rejection in rats. On screening over 600 endomyocardial biopsies (EMBs), taken at different time points after heart transplantation in man, we identified 91 samples with histological signs of acute rejection. Rejection and nonrejection EMBs were analyzed for the presence of properly glycosylated, ie, sulfated sialyl Lewis-x (sLex) decorated L-selectin ligands.
