Plasma levels of endocannabinoids (eCBs) are very dynamic and variable in different circumstances and pathologies. The aim of the study was to determine the levels of the main eCBs and N-acylethanolamines (NAEs) in COVID-19 patients during the acute and post-acute phase of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Samples collected before December 31, 2020 were used for the determination of circulating eCB levels by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).

Electronic address:

Friedreich ataxia is a hereditary neurodegenerative disorder resulting from reduced levels of the protein frataxin due to an expanded GAA repeat in the FXN gene. This deficiency causes progressive degeneration of specific neuronal populations in the cerebellum and the consequent loss of movement coordination and equilibrium, which are some of the main symptoms observed in affected individuals. Like in other neurodegenerative diseases, previous studies suggest that glial cells could be involved in the neurodegenerative process and disease progression in patients with Friedreich ataxia.

Article Synopsis
  • A study surveyed Spanish endocrine surgeons about their use of intraoperative neural monitoring (IONM) in surgeries, with a focus on thyroid and parathyroid procedures.
  • Results showed that while 75% of respondents used intermittent IONM, only 32% routinely performed preoperative laryngoscopy, indicating varied practices.
  • The main barriers to IONM use included its availability, cost, and perceived lack of value, suggesting that standardized guidelines for IONM application in surgery are still needed.

Fast detection of viral infections is a key factor in the strategy for the prevention of epidemics expansion and follow-up. Hepatitis C is paradigmatic within viral infectious diseases and major challenges to elimination still remain. Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is an inexpensive, clean, safe method for quickly detecting viral infection in transmission vectors, aiding epidemic prevention.

Article Synopsis
  • Around 750,000 patients each year are expected to be cured of HCV infection by 2030, but those with advanced chronic liver disease still face risks of liver issues and liver cancer.
  • A study followed 2,335 patients who were treated successfully for HCV and found that a small percentage experienced liver problems and new liver cancer within six years, with risks increasing steadily over time.
  • Risk assessment tools like Baveno VII criteria and other HCC algorithms are useful for identifying patients at higher risk for complications after curing HCV, helping tailor surveillance and management strategies.

Introduction: Rotator cuff-related shoulder pain (RCRSP) is the most common cause of shoulder pain. Currently, exercise is proposed as the first-line treatment for patients suffering from RCRSP. However, adherence to therapeutic exercise programmes can be poor in the long term in a home setting.

Objectives: The revised European Society of Musculoskeletal Radiology (ESSR) consensus guidelines on soft tissue tumor imaging represent an update of 2015 after technical advancements, further insights into specific entities, and revised World Health Organization (2020) and AJCC (2017) classifications. This second of three papers covers algorithms once histology is confirmed: (1) standardized whole-body staging, (2) special algorithms for non-malignant entities, and (3) multiplicity, genetic tumor syndromes, and pitfalls.

Materials And Methods: A validated Delphi method based on peer-reviewed literature was used to derive consensus among a panel of 46 specialized musculoskeletal radiologists from 12 European countries.

  • The WPAI-UC/CD-Caregiver questionnaires evaluate how ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) affect the work life and daily activities of caregivers in Spain.
  • The study involved translating the questionnaires, getting feedback from experts and families, and validating them using data from 370 patients and their caregivers, ensuring they are effective and quick to complete.
  • Results showed good reliability and validity of the Spanish versions of the questionnaires, making them suitable for use by families of children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Background: The coexistence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is uncommon. Data on the impact of HIV on IBD course and its management is scarce.

Aim: To describe the IBD phenotype, therapeutic requirements and prevalence of opportunistic infections (OI) in IBD patients with a coexistent HIV infection.

Background: to prove the effectivity of fertility-sparing procedures in early-stage ovarian cancer by assessing pregnancy rates and obstetrical outcomes.

Methods: we performed a retrospective multicenter study among 55 Spanish hospitals, collecting patients from 18 to 40 years old with diagnosis of early-stage ovarian cancer, epithelial (EOC) or non-epithelial (non-EOC), from January 2010 to December 2019. Data on the use of assisted reproductive techniques, pregnancy attempts and obstetrical outcomes were collected.

: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a clinical condition with high mortality rates, particularly in patients over 65. Current guidelines recommend assessing the likelihood of pulmonary hypertension (LPH) using advanced echocardiography before proceeding to right heart catheterization. This study proposed using the common femoral vein (CFV), an accessible vein that reflects right atrial pressure, as an alternative method to assess the high likelihood of pulmonary hypertension (H-LPH).

Headache and Associated Psychological Variables in Intensive Care Unit Nurses during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Prospective Study.

J Clin Med

June 2024

Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Psychology, Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, Av. de Atenas, s/n, 28922 Alcorcón, Madrid, Spain.

Headaches in health professionals have been studied over the years. This has become even more relevant during the COVID-19 pandemic, due to their link with the use of masks, being female or working in highly complex units. However, their association with different personality traits has not been studied in healthcare workers (HCWs).

Early diagnosis of HIV cases by means of text mining and machine learning models on clinical notes.

Undiagnosed and untreated human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection increases morbidity in the HIV-positive person and allows onward transmission of the virus. Minimizing missed opportunities for HIV diagnosis when a patient visits a healthcare facility is essential in restraining the epidemic and working toward its eventual elimination. Most state-of-the-art proposals employ machine learning (ML) methods and structured data to enhance HIV diagnoses, however, there is a dearth of recent proposals utilizing unstructured textual data from Electronic Health Records (EHRs).

Background: Ulcerative proctitis (UP) can have a milder, less aggressive course than left-sided colitis or extensive colitis. Therefore, immunosuppressants tend to be used less in patients with this condition. Evidence, however, is scarce because these patients are excluded from randomised controlled clinical trials.

  • The study involved 216 healthcare workers and used the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) to assess insomnia across three time periods, revealing initially high insomnia scores that significantly decreased over time.
  • Findings indicated that factors like social support, self-efficacy, and resilience helped reduce insomnia, while cognitive fusion worsened it, highlighting the importance of psychosocial support for healthcare workers during stressful periods.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary malignancy in the liver and is the third cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Surveillance with abdominal ultrasound should be offered to individuals at high risk for developing HCC. Accurate diagnosis, staging, and liver function are crucial when determining the optimal therapeutic approach.

Purpose: Shared decision-making is critical in multiple sclerosis (MS) due to the uncertainty of the disease trajectory over time and the large number of treatment options with differing efficacy, safety and administration characteristics. The aim of this study was to assess patients' decisional conflict regarding the choice of a disease-modifying therapy and its associated factors in patients with mid-stage relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS).

Methods: A multicenter, non-interventional study was conducted.
