Background: Lamin A is barely expressed in human brain neurons or in murine models such as mice and rats. However, in Alheimer´s disease (AD) brains, neurons in the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex abnormally express lamina A from the initial stages of the disease, being a biomarker together with phosphorylated Tau of the nuclear pathology of AD. Constipation and mesenteric neuronal loss are related to aging and neurodegenerative diseases such as AD.

Objective: To estimate the clinical and economic benefits derived from increasing the use of fixed-dose combinations of high-intensity statins and ezetimibe in patients at high/very high cardiovascular risk, from the perspective of the Spanish National Health System (SNS).

Methods: A baseline scenario (current market shares) was compared with scenarios that increased the use of fixed-dose combinations (alternative: 30% increase; optimized: 69% increase). The potential annual increase in the number of controlled patients, cardiovascular events avoided and the associated savings in direct medical costs were estimated, including the cost of pharmacological treatment, follow-up, and managing cardiovascular events over a three-year time horizon.

Objetive: To identify and analyze the resources and costs associated with the administration of intramuscular antiretroviral therapy (ART) cabotegravir+rilpivirine (CAB+RPV) compared to oral ART in the management of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 (HIV-1) infection in Spain.

Methods: An economic model was developed to identify resources and analyze costs from the perspective of the National Health System (NHS) and societal, associated with the administration of intramuscular ART (CAB+RPV) compared to oral ART over a two-year time horizon. Costs included treatment change monitoring, pharmaceutical dispensation, administration, management of adverse events to injection-site reactions (AEs-ISR), travel to the hospital, telepharmacy service, and lost work productivity.

Strict control of atherogenic cholesterol and cardiovascular disease prevention.

Clin Investig Arterioscler

December 2024

Departamento de Medicina, Hospital Universitario Fundación Alcorcón, Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, Alcorcón (Madrid), España. Electronic address:

The role of cholesterol associated to low density lipoproteins (LDL) as a causal agent of arteriosclerosis is scientifically consolidated. A number of seminal clinical trials of the highest scientific quality (randomized, controlled, double-blind versus placebo) in the last 40 years have confirmed that lipid lowering therapy with progressively ambitious therapeutic goals is associated with reductions in cardiovascular complications in the absence of major side effects at least up to the range of 30mg/dL of LDL cholesterol. Drugs that have demonstrated these effects act by reducing circulating LDL cholesterol by upregulating the LDL receptor, independently of their primary action: inhibition of synthesis (statins, bempedoic acid), or absorption of cholesterol (ezetimibe) and promoting recycling of the LDL receptor via proprotein conversin subtilisine kexin 9 blockade.

Background: The advantages of active surveillance (AS) in low-risk prostate cancer (PC) have already been widely demonstrated. The 15-year results of the Prostate Testing for Cancer and Treatment (ProtecT) trial were published recently, reflecting worse oncological outcomes of their active monitoring programme (AMP) compared with radical prostatectomy (RP) or radiotherapy (RDT). Our objective was to analyse the survival of patients with International Society of Urological Pathology (ISUP) grade I PC depending on the treatment received and point out the differences between an AS protocol and the AMP established in the ProtecT trial.

Objective: To ascertain the changes of serum neurofilament light chain (sNfL) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (sGFAP) values in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) patients treated with ocrelizumab and their association with treatment response.

Methods: Multicenter prospective study including 115 RRMS patients initiating ocrelizumab treatment between February 2020 and March 2022 followed during a year. Serum samples were collected at baseline and every 3 months to measure sNfL and sGFAP levels using single-molecule array (SIMOA) technology.

Lentigo maligna (LM) often poses a diagnostic challenge due to its clinical and dermoscopic mimicry of benign lesions, leading to delayed diagnosis. Focal areas of reticular disruption have been described as one of the earliest dermoscopic signs observed. To describe a novel dermoscopic sign in LM, namely the presence of a parallel pigmented network.

Background And Objective: Diagnosis of vibratory urticaria/angioedema is established after performing the vortex provocation test. There is current consensus on measuring the forearm perimeter after running such test to define a positive response to it.

Material And Method: We evaluated the frequency of prior symptoms following vibratory stimuli in volunteers using a questionnaire, response to the vortex provocation test in the same volunteers (increase in forearm perimeter, erythema, localized edema, heat, and pruritus), interrater reliability, and correlation between the scores obtained in the questionnaire and response to the test.

Minimally invasive interventional guided imaging therapies of musculoskeletal tumors.

Quant Imaging Med Surg

November 2024

Department of Radiology, MSK Unit, The Clinical Diagnostic Imaging Centre (CDIC), Hospital Clinic, Universitat de Barcelona (UB), Barcelona, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • Historically, musculoskeletal (MSK) tumors have been treated separately, but the complications from metastases, like pain and fractures, require a team of experts to decide on the best treatments, including surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy.
  • * Recently, minimally invasive interventional therapies, particularly image-guided ablation techniques, have gained traction as promising options to effectively treat MSK tumors, offering less invasive alternatives.
  • * Imaging methods like CT, which is preferred for its accessibility, guide these interventions, which include techniques like radiofrequency ablation and cryoablation, sometimes combined with other treatments for better tumor control.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the incidence of urinary tract infections (UTIs) in elderly patients visiting emergency departments in Spain, including factors like hospitalization and outcomes.
  • Out of 25,375 patients, 1,058 were diagnosed with UTIs, showing an annual incidence of 24.7 per 1,000 seniors, with 36.5% requiring hospitalization; 30-day mortality was recorded at 5.4%.
  • The findings highlighted that functional dependence was strongly linked to negative health outcomes, while the biomarkers tested did not effectively predict these adverse events.

SGLT-2 inhibitors (SGLT-2is) are considered to be a first-line treatment for common conditions like type 2 diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and heart failure due to their proven ability to reduce cardiovascular and renal morbidity and mortality. Despite these benefits, SGLT-2is are associated with certain adverse effects (AEs), particularly genitourinary (GU) events, which can lead to treatment discontinuation in some patients. Preventing these AEs is essential for maintaining the cardiorenal benefits of SGLT-2is.
