Background: Autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT), a T cell-mediated organ-specific disorder, and transcription factors have a critical role in the regulation of immune responses, especially in the fate of T-helper cells.

Objectives: This study aims to investigate changes in the gene expression profile of transcription factors and regulators in patients with different forms of thyroid pathology.

Methods: We used the pathway-specific real-time PCR array (Neurotrophins and Receptors RT2 Profiler PCR Array, QIAGEN, Germany) to identify and verify transcription factors and regulators pathway-focused genes expression in peripheral white blood cells of patients with postoperative hypothyroidism, hypothyroidism as a result of AIT and AIT with elevated serum and antithyroglobulin (anti-Tg) and anti-thyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO) antibodies.

SARS-CoV-2 infection fatality rate (IFR) doubles with every five years of age from childhood onward. Circulating autoantibodies neutralizing IFN-α, IFN-ω, and/or IFN-β are found in ~20% of deceased patients across age groups. In the general population, they are found in ~1% of individuals aged 20-70 years and in >4% of those >70 years old.

The aim of the study was to investigate the phagocytic and metabolic activity of peripheral blood neutrophils in rats with lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced periodontitis combined with chronic thiolactone hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy). The experiment included non-linear mature male rats (n=48), which were divided into 4 groups: control; animals with a periodontitis model; animals with a model of chronic thiolactone HHcy; animals with a model of periodontitis in combination with chronic thiolactone HHcy. Phagocytic activity, phagocytic index and phagocytic number were determined as indicators of phagocytosis of peripheral blood neutrophils.

Article Synopsis
  • Roundup (Rn) is a widely used glyphosate herbicide that impacts non-target organisms, including effects on zinc (Zn) accumulation and activities.
  • The study exposed the digestive gland of the bivalve mollusk Unio tumidus to Rn, Zn, and a Zn chelator (TPEN) to analyze their interactions over 17 hours.
  • Results showed that Rn did not alter Zn levels but had pro-oxidative effects on glutathione (GSH) levels and lysosomal stability, while TPEN negatively affected Zn functions, indicating the utility of ex vivo approaches in studying aquatic pollutants.

A review on natural teeth whitening.

J Oral Biosci

March 2022

Council for Nutritional and Environmental Medicine (CONEM), Mo I Rana, Norway. Electronic address:

Background: Discoloration of teeth occurs for various reasons. Common ingredients like substances from tea and coffee, as well as antibiotics like tetracycline, or food dyes, can percolate into the teeth, and, as such, these stains may persist in the porous structure of the enamel. Smoking is also contributory to dental discoloration, with toxins of tobacco smoke accumulating in a similar way.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is identified as an important growth factor involved in learning and memory. Patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis can suffer from cognitive dysfunction, whereas BDNF is directly regulated by thyroid hormones. It seems reasonable to propose that changes in BDNF expression underlie some of the persistent neurological impairments associated with hypothyroidism.

Oxidative Stress and Energy Metabolism in the Brain: Midlife as a Turning Point.

Antioxidants (Basel)

October 2021

Department of Neurophysiology, Institute of Physiology, University of Tübingen, 72074 Tübingen, Germany.

Neural tissue is one of the main oxygen consumers in the mammalian body, and a plentitude of metabolic as well as signaling processes within the brain is accompanied by the generation of reactive oxygen (ROS) and nitrogen (RNS) species. Besides the important signaling roles, both ROS and RNS can damage/modify the self-derived cellular components thus promoting neuroinflammation and oxidative stress. While previously, the latter processes were thought to progress linearly with age, newer data point to midlife as a critical turning point.

Although dry mouth, dry eye, and swollen salivary glands are the hallmark manifestations of Sjögren's syndrome (pSS), a wide spectrum of other conditions should be considered for differential diagnosis. The diagnostic challenge is mainly encountered in patients presenting with dry eyes and/or dry mouth, who do not meet the full established classification criteria for pSS. Presented case-based review highlights the relationship between dry eye, parotid swelling, and psychiatric disorders.

Unlabelled: It is known that the violation of one or more functions of the liver, where the basic biochemical processes take place, is reflected in the functional state of many organs and systems, causing severe consequences. For the effective treatment of the hepatobiliary system diseases the drugs from fungi and plant materials are promising, the ingredients of which are close to natural metabolites, have different mechanisms of hepatoprotective action and, in general, can have a positive effect on liver function.

Aim: The aim of the research was to investigate the hepatoprotective properties of the Maitake mushrooms thick extract in the experiment on rats with paracetamol (acetaminophen)-induced hepatitis.
