Article Synopsis
  • Mothers of preterm infants face high levels of stress when their babies are admitted to the NICU, primarily due to separation, the baby's condition, and the NICU environment.
  • A study assessed stress levels using the Parental Stressor Scale: NICU, finding that parental role alteration was the most significant stress factor, followed by concerns about infant appearance and the sensory overload of the NICU.
  • Stress in mothers was positively correlated with maternal age and the duration of NICU treatment, while more frequent visits to the NICU were linked to lower stress levels; however, severe infant conditions, like seizures or needing ventilator support, increased maternal stress.

Natural Dietary Compounds in the Treatment of Arsenic Toxicity.

Molecules

July 2022

Department of Chemical, Physics, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Sassari, Via Vienna 2, 07100 Sassari, Italy.

Chronic exposure to arsenic (As) compounds leads to its accumulation in the body, with skin lesions and cancer being the most typical outcomes. Treating As-induced diseases continues to be challenging as there is no specific, safe, and efficacious therapeutic management. Therapeutic and preventive measures available to combat As toxicity refer to chelation therapy, antioxidant therapy, and the intake of natural dietary compounds.

The vulnerability of bivalve mollusks to micropollutants is estimated mainly in single model exposures. However, chronic environmental stress and complex exposures can modulate their responses. To evaluate the impact of population-dependent adaptations on the ability to react to common micropollutants, we compared freshwater bivalves Unio tumidus from two distinct populations, pure (Pr) and contaminated (Ct), in their exposures to microplastics (MP, 1 mg L, size 0.

Article Synopsis
  • Breakthrough cases of severe COVID-19 in vaccinated individuals may be linked to weak or inadequate antibody responses, particularly among those already at risk.
  • A study of 48 vaccinated individuals with hypoxemic COVID-19 pneumonia found that about 24% had auto-antibodies (auto-Abs) that neutralized type I interferons, which are essential for the immune response.
  • The presence of these auto-Abs suggests that even with normal antibody responses to the vaccine, some individuals can still suffer severe effects from COVID-19, indicating a need for more targeted strategies for vulnerable populations.

Objective: Hospitalization in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) with numerous painful medical interventions, being separated from parents, leads to the high risk of chronic stress for preterm infants. Today, many NICUs use more appropriate developmental care and pain management, but the early and long-term outcomes of stress in these vulnerable infants require searching for more stress-reducing interventions in neonatal care. The objective of the study was to investigate how skin-to-skin contact (SSC) can influence the biologic stress levels in preterm infants in the NICU by assessing cortisol and oxytocin levels.

The aim of present study was to analyze the serum lipid profile parameters in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and comorbidities [overweight/obesity and/or chronic pancreatitis (CP)] to determine the contribution of these pathologic factors to lipid metabolism disorders in T2DM. The study involved 579 type 2 diabetic (T2D) patients with comorbid overweight/ obesity and/or CP. The serum lipid panel parameters [total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C)] were determined by commercially available kits on a Cobas 6000 analyzer (Roche Hitachi, Germany).

The aim of the present work is to define the risk factors that can affect the presence of a cognitive impairment and analyze the associations of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) gene polymorphism (rs6265), vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene polymorphism (rs2228570), and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor gene polymorphism (rs4880213) with the cognitive impairment in patients with autoimmune thyroiditis and hypothyroidism in the Western Ukraine population and predict the development of cognitive disorders in these patients. The study involved 153 patients with various forms of thyroid pathology (hypothyroidism, autoimmune thyroiditis, elevated serum antibodies anti-thyroglobulin and anti-thyroid peroxidase). Cognitive impairment in the examined patients was evaluated based on the results of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) test.

Novel antibiotic combinations may act synergistically to inhibit the growth of multidrug-resistant bacterial pathogens but predicting which combination will be successful is difficult, and standard antimicrobial susceptibility testing may not identify important physiological differences between planktonic free-swimming and biofilm-protected surface-attached sessile cells. Using a nominally macrolide-resistant model Klebsiella pneumoniae strain (ATCC 10031) we demonstrate the effectiveness of several macrolides in inhibiting biofilm growth in multi-well plates, and the ability of azithromycin (AZM) to improve the effectiveness of the antibacterial last-agent-of-choice for K. pneumoniae infections, colistin methanesulfonate (CMS), against biofilms.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to set criteria for thermal sensitivity in healthy individuals aged 17-20 through a survey of 150 participants.
  • A thermal test revealed that individuals with higher heat sensitivity experienced increased heart rate and blood pressure, while those with lower sensitivity had stable or decreased readings.
  • Findings suggest that heightened sympathetic nervous system activity in heat-sensitive individuals indicates stress response, raising concerns in light of rising global temperatures.

Silica nanoparticles were applied as the carrier of chloramphenicol (2,2-dichloro--[(1,2)-1,3-dihydroxy-1-(4-nitrophenyl)propan-2-yl]acetamide), and were loaded in a 1% carbopol-based gel (poly(acrylic acid)), which allowed obtainment of an upgraded drug form. The samples of silica materials were obtained by means of modified Stöber synthesis, and their morphological properties were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method, elemental analysis (EA), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), analysis of the specific surface properties, X-ray diffraction study (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS) methods, which permitted the selection of the drug carrier. The two obtained silica carriers were coated with chloramphenicol and loaded into 1% carbopol gel.
