Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Clear Water Bay, Kowloon, Hong Kong SAR 999077, China.

Onboard measuring the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) for lithium-ion batteries is a long-standing issue that limits the technologies such as portable electronics and electric vehicles. Challenges arise from not only the high sampling rate required by the Shannon Sampling Theorem but also the sophisticated real-life battery-using profiles. We here propose a fast and accurate EIS predicting system by combining the fractional-order electric circuit model-a highly nonlinear model with clear physical meanings-with a median-filtered neural network machine learning.

Water purification is becoming increasingly important due to the scarcity and industrial contamination of water. Although traditional adsorbents such as activated carbon and zeolites can remove heavy metal ions from water, they have slow kinetics and low uptake. To address these problems, metal-organic framework (MOF) adsorbents have been developed, which are characterized by facile synthesis, high porosity, designability, and stability.

Metallic glass-based triboelectric nanogenerators.

Nat Commun

February 2023

Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shatin, N.T., Hong Kong SAR, China.

Surface wear is a major hindrance in the solid/solid interface of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG), severely affecting their output performance and stability. To reduce the mechanical input and surface wear, solid/liquid-interface alternatives have been investigated; however, charge generation capability is still lower than that in previously reported solid/solid-interface TENGs. Thus, achieving triboelectric interface with high surface charge generation capability and low surface wear remains a technological challenge.

We demonstrate the use of the machine learning (ML) tools to rapidly and accurately predict the electric field as a guide for designing core-shell Au-silica nanoparticles to enhance O sensitization and selectivity of organic synthesis. Based on the feature importance analysis, obtained from a deep neural network algorithm, we found a general and linear dependent descriptor (θ ∝ , where , , and are the shape constant, size of metal nanoparticles, and distance from the metal surface) for the electric field around the core-shell plasmonic nanoparticle. Directed by the new descriptor, we synthesized gold-silica nanoparticles and validated their plasmonic intensity using scanning transmission electron microscopy-electron energy loss spectroscopy (STEM-EELS) mapping.

Atomically thin monolayer semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), exhibiting direct band gap and strong light-matter interaction, are promising for optoelectronic devices. However, an efficient band alignment engineering method is required to further broaden their practical applications as versatile optoelectronics. In this work, the band alignment of two vertically stacked monolayer TMDs using the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method is effectively tuned by two strategies: 1) formulating the compositions of MoS Se alloys, and 2) varying the twist angles of the stacked heterobilayer structures.

Guangzhou HKUST Fok Ying Tung Research Institute, Guangzhou 511458, China; Department of Mathematics, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong SAR, China. Electronic address:

Over the past two decades, genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have successfully advanced our understanding of the genetic basis of complex traits. Despite the fruitful discovery of GWASs, most GWAS samples are collected from European populations, and these GWASs are often criticized for their lack of ancestry diversity. Trans-ancestry association mapping (TRAM) offers an exciting opportunity to fill the gap of disparities in genetic studies between non-Europeans and Europeans.

Motivation: As increasing sample sizes from genome-wide association studies (GWASs), polygenic risk scores (PRSs) have shown great potential in personalized medicine with disease risk prediction, prevention and treatment. However, the PRS constructed using European samples becomes less accurate when it is applied to individuals from non-European populations. It is an urgent task to improve the accuracy of PRSs in under-represented populations, such as African populations and East Asian populations.

Alkaline-surfactant-polymer (ASP) flooding technology is used to maximize crude oil recovery. However, the extensive use of alkaline materials makes it difficult to treat the water used. Here, an improved multi-zone anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) using FeSO4 as electron acceptor was employed to treat the wastewater from ASP flooding technology, and the effects on major pollutants (hydrolyzed polyacrylamide, petroleum substances, surfactants suspended solids) and associated parameters (chemical oxygen demand, viscosity) were evaluated.

Tuning the electronic properties of polymers is of great importance in designing highly efficient organic solar cells. Noncovalent intramolecular interactions have been often used for conformational control to enhance the planarity of polymers or molecules, which may reduce band gaps and promote charge transfer. However, it is not known if noncovalent interactions may alter the electronic properties of conjugated polymers through some mechanism other than the conformational control.

Reconstruction of the incremental capacity trajectories from current-varying profiles for lithium-ion batteries.

iScience

October 2021

Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Clear Water Bay, Kowloon, Hong Kong SAR 999077, China.

The reliable assessment of battery degradation is fundamental for safe and efficient battery utilization. As an important health diagnostic method, the incremental capacity (IC) analysis relies highly on the low-noise constant-current profiles, which violates the real-life scenarios. Here, a model-free fitting process is reported, for the first time, to reconstruct the IC trajectories from noisy or even current-varying profiles.

Light-driven polymerization, such as photoinduced electron/energy transfer-reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization, enables biological benign conditions and versatile functional polymer structure design, which is readily used in protein-polymer bioconjugates. However, conventional metalloporphyrinic homogeneous catalysts for PET-RAFT polymerization suffer from limited aqueous solubility and tedious purification. Here we demonstrate the design of PET-RAFT photocatalyst from the reticular assembled Zr-porphyrinic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), along with a biomacromolecule-based chain transfer agent, as efficient bioconjugation tools in water.

Fabricating electrodes with large specific surface area (SSA) and high permeability has been the long-standing target in redox flow batteries (RFBs). In this work, we propose a novel ZIF-8-assisted etching approach to form holey fibers in the electrospinning process of aligned electrode structures. The etching approach allows the formation of holey fibers with small pores of ~50 nm, offering large active surface areas for redox reactions, while the aligned macrostructure with the holey fibers of 3-5 μm in diameter ensures a high permeability along the fiber direction.

The water-gas shift reaction is one of the most important reactions in industrial hydrogen production and plays a key role in Fischer-Tropsch-type synthesis, which is widely believed to generate hydrocarbons in the deep carbon cycle but is little known at extreme pressure-temperature conditions found in the Earth's upper mantle. Here, we performed extensive ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and free energy calculations to study the water-gas shift reaction. We found the direct formation of formic acid from CO and supercritical water at 10-13 GPa and 1400 K without any catalyst.

The development of polygenic risk scores (PRSs) has proved useful to stratify the general European population into different risk groups. However, PRSs are less accurate in non-European populations due to genetic differences across different populations. To improve the prediction accuracy in non-European populations, we propose a cross-population analysis framework for PRS construction with both individual-level (XPA) and summary-level (XPASS) GWAS data.
