Acting as the interface between the human body and its environment, clothing is indispensable in human thermoregulation and even survival under extreme environmental conditions. Development of clothing textiles with prolonged passive temperature-adaptive thermoregulation without external energy consumption is much needed for protection from thermal stress and energy saving, but very challenging. Here, a temperature-adaptive thermoregulation filament (TATF) consisting of thermoresponsive vacuum cavities formed by the temperature-responsive volume change of the material confined in the cellular cores of the filament is proposed.

Background: Perioperative neurocognitive disorder (PND) is a prevalent form of cognitive impairment in elderly patients following anesthesia and surgery. The underlying mechanisms of PND are closely related to perineuronal nets (PNNs). PNNs, which are complexes of extracellular matrix primarily surrounding neurons in the hippocampus, play a critical role in neurocognitive function.

Unifying spatiotemporal and frequential attention for traffic prediction.

Sci Rep

January 2025

College of Computer and Information Engineering, Nanjing Tech University, Nanjing, Jiangsu, China.

Intelligent transportation systems heavily rely on forecasting urban traffic flow, and a variety of approaches have been developed for this purpose. However, most current methods focus on exploring spatial and temporal dependencies in historical traffic data, while often overlooking the inherent spectral characteristics hidden in traffic time series. In this paper, we introduce an approach to analyzing traffic flow in the frequency domain.

Low-threshold surface-emitting colloidal quantum-dot circular Bragg laser array.

Light Sci Appl

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Optical Fiber and Cable Manufacture Technology, Institute of Nanoscience and Applications, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Southern University of Science and Technology, Shenzhen, China.

Colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) are attractive gain media due to their wavelength-tunability and low optical gain threshold. Consequently, CQD lasers, especially the surface-emitting ones, are promising candidates for display, sensing and communication. However, it remains challenging to achieve a low-threshold surface-emitting CQD laser array with high stability and integration density.

Honokiol (HK) and Magnolol (MG), isomers found in Magnolia officinalis bark extract (MBE), possess bioactive properties attributed to their biphenolic structure. However, their low polarity results in poor oral absorption, limiting their bioavailability. To enhance their systemic absorption after passing through the digestive tract, efficient carrier systems are essential.

High Preoperative T1 Slope is a Marker for Global Sagittal Malalignment.

Clin Spine Surg

January 2025

Department of Orthopedic Surgery, NYU Langone Health, New York, NY.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed preoperative data from adult spinal deformity patients to establish a threshold for T1 slope (T1S) from cervical radiographs that indicates thoracolumbar malalignment.
  • Researchers found a specific cutoff of 30 degrees for high T1S, with 50% of the patients falling above this threshold.
  • Notably, higher T1S was linked with greater thoracic kyphosis, sagittal vertical axis, T1-pelvic angle, and pelvic tilt, suggesting that this measurement could serve as a useful parameter in cervical evaluations.

Optimized Intravenous Injection in Adult Zebrafish.

J Vis Exp

December 2024

Department of Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine, LKS Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong; ZeBlast Technology Limited, Hong Kong Science Park;

Intravenous (IV) injection is widely recognized as the most effective and commonly utilized method for achieving systemic delivery of substances in mammalian research models. However, its application in adult zebrafish for drug delivery, stem cell transplantation, and regenerative and cancer studies has been limited due to the challenges posed by their small body size and intricate blood vessels. To overcome these limitations, alternative injection techniques such as intracardiac and retro-orbital (RO) injection have been explored in the past for stem cell transplantation in adult zebrafish.

Consensus on the lung cancer management after third-generation EGFR-TKI resistance.

Lancet Reg Health West Pac

December 2024

Guangdong Lung Cancer Institute, Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital (Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences), Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Lung cancer is the most common type of cancer in the Asia-Pacific region, with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) making up about 85% of cases, and a significant mutation rate of 40-60% in Asian patients with lung adenocarcinoma.
  • Third-generation EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs) have improved treatment for NSCLC with mutations, but managing resistance to these drugs is still a major issue with no standardized guidelines.
  • A set of recommendations has been developed, integrating international guidelines and regional clinical experiences, to help healthcare providers classify resistance, conduct clinical testing, and devise treatment strategies for patients struggling with resistance to third-generation EGFR-TKIs.

Department of Psychology, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Macau, Macau; Centre for Cognitive and Brain Sciences, Institute of Collaborative Innovation, University of Macau, Macau. Electronic address:

Previous research investigating Internet gaming disorder (IGD) in China involved mainly youth samples despite the large population of adult gamers. Drawing on the self-regulatory executive function model, this study aimed to demonstrate the psychometric robustness of negative and positive gaming-specific metacognitions assessed by the short-form Metacognitions about Online Gaming Scale (MOGS; Study 1). Then, Study 2 aimed to explore bidirectional associations between these two factors of the MOGS and IGD among a broad age spectrum of Chinese adult gamers.

Composite gels are a type of soft matter, which contains a continuous three-dimensional crosslinked network and has been embedded with non-gel materials. Compared to pure gels, composite gels show high flexibility and tunability in properties and hence have attracted extensive interest in applications ranging from cancer therapy to tissue engineering. In this study, we incorporated triethylenetetramine (TETA)-functionalized cobalt ferrite nanoparticles (ANPs) into a hydrogel consisting of sodium alginate (SA) and methyl cellulose (MC), and examined the resulting composite gels for controlled drug release.
