This study presents a preliminary examination of the effects of environment changes post-excavation on heavily corroded archaeological Roman iron nails using neutron tomography and image registration techniques. Roman nails were exposed to either a high relative humidity environment, or fast thermal drying as primary experiments to show the power of this imaging technique to monitor and quantify the structural changes of corroded metal artifacts. This research employed a series of pre- and post-treatment tomography acquisitions (time-series) complemented by advanced image registration methods.

Interprofessional meetings are crucial for achieving patient-centeredness in healthcare. Exactly how patient-centeredness is reached during these meetings remains underexamined. Adopting an Ethnomethodology and Conversation Analysis (hereafter EMCA) perspective, this contribution looks at video-recordings of interprofessional meetings in two distinct healthcare settings: rehabilitation and internal medicine.

Venous leg ulcers (VLUs) provoke multiple symptoms and impact individuals and society as a whole. Their treatment and prevention strategies require individual's involvement in self-management strategies. Insufficient knowledge with regard to prevention, management, and treatment has been identified as a critical factor related to VLUs and their recurrence.

The group represents a serious risk in powdered and amylaceous foodstuffs. Cold plasma (the fourth state of matter) is emerging as an alternative effective nonthermal technology for pasteurizing a wide range of matrices in solid, liquid, and powder form. The present study aims to evaluate the mechanisms involved in inactivation via cold plasma, focusing on (i) the technology's ability to generate damage in cells (at the morphological and molecular levels) and (ii) studying the effectiveness of cold plasma in biofilm mitigation through the direct effect and inhibition of the biofilm-forming capacity of sublethally damaged cells post-treatment.

Context: Contemporary technologies, such as mainstream and specialised Assistive Technologies (ATs), are seen as effective. However, there is a noticeable gap between technological progress and the ability to customise these technologies to meet the unique needs and characteristics of neurodivergent individuals, particularly those on the Autism Spectrum and people with Intellectual Disability (pwID).

Purpose: The goal of this study is to investigate the present requirements and future priorities acknowledged by specialists in the field regarding the progress of social inclusion for this population, making use of ATs.

The animal brain is endowed with an innate sense of number allowing to intuitively perceive the approximate quantity of items in a scene, or "numerosity." This ability is not limited to items distributed in space, but also to events unfolding in time and to the average numerosity of dynamic scenes. How the brain computes and represents the average numerosity over time, however, remains unclear.

Background: Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 highlighting the importance of social distancing guidelines. Following a series of lockdowns and the widespread vaccination of the European population, many countries began to lift these restrictions. During this period, while some parents yearned for emotional support and family presence, others found that the solitude facilitated by the restrictions was beneficial for bonding and breastfeeding.

Background: The end tuberculosis (TB) strategy requires a novel patient treatment approach contrary to the one-size-fits-all model. It is well known that each patient's physiology is different and leads to various rates of drug elimination. Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) offers a way to manage drug dosage adaptation but requires trained pharmacologists, which is scarce in resource-limited settings.

Introduction: Maternal-neonatal healthcare services were severely disrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic in even high-income countries within the World Health Organization (WHO) European Region. The objective of this study was to compare trends in the quality of maternal and neonatal care (QMNC) in Sweden and Norway to 12 other countries from the WHO European Region during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to identify domains for improvement.

Material And Methods: This cross-sectional study included women giving birth in Europe from March 1, 2020 to December 31, 2022.

Article Synopsis
  • Restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic negatively impacted maternal and newborn care (QMNC) across Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, with varying strictness in protective measures implemented.
  • An online survey collected data from 1,875 women who gave birth in these countries, revealing that Switzerland had better QMNC scores compared to Germany and Austria, particularly in the "Experience of care" sub-index.
  • The study found weak to strong correlations between reorganizational changes due to COVID-19 and other QMNC areas, highlighting the need for continued research to enhance care quality post-pandemic.

How visual experience shapes body representation.

Institute of Neuroscience (IoNS), Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgium; Institute for Research in Psychological Sciences (IPSY), Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgium; HES-SO Valais-Wallis, The Sense Innovation and Research Center, Switzerland. Electronic address:

We do not have a veridical representation of our body in our mind. For instance, tactile distances of equal measure along the medial-lateral axis of our limbs are generally perceived as larger than those running along the proximal-distal axis. This anisotropy in tactile distances reflects distortions in body-shape representation, such that the body parts are perceived as wider than they are.

The e-Flower: A hydrogel-actuated 3D MEA for brain spheroid electrophysiology.

Sci Adv

October 2024

Laboratory for Soft Bioelectronic Interfaces, Neuro-X Institute, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Geneva, Switzerland.

Traditional microelectrode arrays (MEAs) are limited to measuring electrophysiological activity in two dimensions, failing to capture the complexity of three-dimensional (3D) tissues such as neural organoids and spheroids. Here, we introduce a flower-shaped MEA (e-Flower) that can envelop submillimeter brain spheroids following actuation by the sole addition of the cell culture medium. Inspired by soft microgrippers, its actuation mechanism leverages the swelling properties of a polyacrylic acid hydrogel grafted to a polyimide substrate hosting the electrical interconnects.
