Article Synopsis
  • - Recent studies indicate that excessive activation of the complement system plays a role in severe COVID-19, similar to a condition called thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA).
  • - Researchers analyzed genetic data from 97 COVID-19 patients and identified key genetic variants associated with severe illness, revealing that specific combinations of these variants correlated with ICU hospitalization.
  • - The study suggests that certain genetic profiles, particularly those involving ADAMTS13 and complement factors, could inform targeted treatments for severe COVID-19 patients, as well as uncover potential gender differences in these genetic variants.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing is a newly established concept in orthopedics compared with other industries. Surgical applications of 3D printing and tissue engineering have been investigated since the early 2000s, almost two decades after Charles Hull had patented the first device currently in use for additive manufacturing, also known as rapid prototyping or more commonly 3D printing, and whose initial formal appellation was stereolithography (SLA). Despite technological progress, substantial principles have largely remained unaltered.

Introduction: Within the last 50 years the management of patients with breast cancer has changed dramatically with a significant de-escalation of the role and magnitude of surgery, both for the management of the primary tumor and for the management of the axilla. In the management of the axilla of patients with early stage breast cancer (EBC) and clinically uninvolved axilla (cN0), axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) was gradually replaced by sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) saving more than 60-70% of patients from an unnecessary dissection. Further studies confirmed that isolated tumor cells or micrometastases found on the SLN had no further benefit from ALND sparing even more patients from an unnecessary ALND.
