Introduction: The presence of female faculty members in anesthesia residency programs is pivotal for enhancing and supporting diversity and gender equity in medical education. This study probes the intricate interplay between the percentage of female faculty and whether program type and geographical location impact the composition of female faculty.

Methods: For this retrospective cross-sectional analysis, we collected data from the Fellowship and Residency Electronic Interactive Database Access (FREIDA) system to assess the percentages of female faculty in anesthesia residency programs.

Objectives: Current guidelines recommend dexamethasone 6 mg/day for up to 10 days in patients with severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) requiring supplemental oxygenation or mechanical ventilation. The practice has significant variation, however, and dexamethasone has been used for >10 days for many patients with severe COVID-19. The aim of this study was to assess the benefits and risks associated with standard versus extended use of dexamethasone in patients with severe COVID-19.

Objective: The incidence of splanchnic vein thrombosis (SVT) is reported to be <25 times lower than that of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary emboli, which occur in 70 to 270/100,000 cases in the general population. Current guidelines recommend initial treatment with therapeutic low-molecular-weight heparin followed by a transition to a vitamin K antagonist (VKA) or a direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) in patients with cirrhosis who develop SVT without severe liver dysfunction. This, however, is based on observational data.

Article Synopsis
  • Coronary artery anomalies (CAA) are congenital heart conditions that can cause serious issues like arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death due to abnormal coronary artery structure and function.
  • A 58-year-old woman experienced chest pain and shortness of breath, leading to the discovery of a rare coronary artery anomaly during cardiac catheterization, including an unusual left anterior descending artery and an absent left circumflex artery.
  • Despite being treated with various medications for her condition, she continued to suffer from chronic angina, and a surgical assessment determined that her arterial anomaly was not operable.

Background: The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) provided a focused update to the 2021 Guideline for the Management of Heart Failure, now providing a 1A recommendation for intravenous iron in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and iron deficiency (ID). However, the findings from randomized controlled trials (RCT) are mixed. This systematic review of RCTs aims to provide an update and synthesize the evidence addressing the association of intravenous iron with patient-based outcomes in patients with HFrEF and ID.

Background And Aim: The quality of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for the management of antithrombotic agents in patients undergoing gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy has not been systematically appraised. The goal of this study was to evaluate the methodological quality of CPGs for the management of antithrombotic agents in periendoscopic period published within last 6 years.

Methods: A systematic search of PubMed and Embase databases was performed to identify eligible CPGs published between January 1, 2016, and April 14, 2022, addressing the management of antithrombotic agents in the periendoscopic period.

Epiploic appendagitis (EA) is an uncommon intraabdominal pathology resulting in transient, localized pain. The condition is caused by ischemia of one of the epiploic appendages, which are distributed axially along the length of the colon. EA is often mistaken for other more common etiologies of an acute abdomen.

Although left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation can improve survival in patients with end-stage heart failure, it is not without risk. Numerous complications are possible, and durable support requires substantial lifestyle changes. The use of various knowledge-assessment tools may allow for more informed patient decisions.

Am J Cardiol

September 2023

Research Methodology and Biostatistics Core, Office of Research, Department of Internal Medicine, University of South Florida, Tampa, Florida.

Multiple clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for heart failure management have been published to provide the best practices regarding the use of foundational therapies to reduce morbidity and mortality in this patient population. However, a critical appraisal of these heart failure guidelines has not been performed. This systematic review aimed to assess the methodological quality of current CPGs in the management of patients with heart failure.
