Background: SARS-CoV-2 responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic, infiltrates the human body by binding to the ACE2 receptor in the respiratory system cell membranes, leading to severe lung tissue damage. An analog of ACE2, ACE1, has gained attention due to its well-known Deletion/Insertion (D/I) polymorphism, which seems to be associated with COVID-19 outcomes. This study aims to reveal the allelic and genotypic frequencies of the rs4646994 polymorphism in the Moroccan population and investigate the association between COVID-19 outcomes and both genotypic and demographic data.

Temporomandibular Joint Disorders in Elderly Patients.

Cureus

January 2025

Department of Biology and Basic Subjects, Faculty of Dental Medicine, Hassan II University of Casablanca, Casablanca, MAR.

The management of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) in elderly patients can present a significant challenge for dentists due to its multifactorial etiology, aging-related changes that contribute to TMD, and the fragile psychological state of these patients. Despite the growing prevalence of TMD in the elderly population, the scientific literature provides limited information about effective management strategies for this group. Therefore, it is crucial for researchers and clinicians to focus on improving our understanding of TMD in the elderly population and to develop more effective treatment approaches.

Amino-functionalized manganese oxide for effective hexavalent chromium adsorption.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

December 2024

Laboratory of Interface Materials Environment, Faculty of Sciences Ain Chock, Hassan II University, Casablanca, Morocco.

This study explores the use of functionalized manganese oxide (K-MnO-NH) for the removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) ions, a highly toxic heavy metal contaminant, from wastewater. The synthesis of K-MnO-NH was achieved through a two-step process, followed by comprehensive characterization using various analytical techniques, which confirmed the material's formation as a pure phase. The K-MnO-NH exhibited exceptional chromium removal efficiency, achieving up to 90% (4.

December 2024

Laboratory of Epidemiology and Research in Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah University, PO 1893, Km 2200, Route Sidi Harazem, Fez 30000, Morocco.

Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Etiology (CKDu) is a worldwide hidden health threat that is associated with progressive loss of kidney functions without showing any initial symptoms until reaching end-stage renal failure, eventually leading to death. It is a growing health problem in Asia, Central America, Africa, and the Middle East, with identified hotspots. CKDu disease mainly affects young men in rural farming communities, while its etiology is not related to hypertension, kidney stones, diabetes, or other known causes.

Insights into the emerging immune checkpoint NR2F6 in cancer immunity.

J Leukoc Biol

December 2024

LIGEP, Immuno-Genetics and Human Pathology Laboratory, Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, Hassan II University, Casablanca, Morocco.

NR2F6 has emerged as a key player in immune regulation, especially in cancer immunity. It has indeed been reported that NR2F6 could suppress the anti-tumor immune response, and has therefore been suggested as possible target in cancer immunotherapy. In this review, we will start by describing the complex structure of the NR2F6 gene and its multifaceted biological functions.

Article Synopsis
  • Leishmania is a parasite responsible for leishmaniasis, which is impacted by climate change and has developed strategies to evade the immune system, specifically by targeting immune receptors like FcγRIIA/CD32a.
  • In experiments with CD32a transgenic mice and various cell cultures, the study found that FcγRIIA/CD32a can both accelerate inflammation and prevent necrotic lesions in infected macrophages.
  • The results highlight the role of FcγRIIA/CD32a in leishmaniasis and suggest it could be a promising target for future therapies.
