Background People with HIV (PWH) are at an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) with an unknown added impact of hepatitis C virus (HCV) coinfection. We aimed to identify whether HCV coinfection increases the risk of type 1 myocardial infarction (T1MI) and if the risk differs by age. Methods and Results We used data from NA-ACCORD (North American AIDS Cohort Collaboration on Research and Design) from January 1, 2000, to December 31, 2017, PWH (aged 40-79 years) who had initiated antiretroviral therapy.

Background Transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis (ATTR-CMP) is an increasingly recognized and treatable cause of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. Multimodality cardiac imaging is recommended for ATTR-CMP diagnosis, but its cost-effectiveness in current clinical practice has not been well studied. Methods and Results Using a microsimulation model, we compared the cost-effectiveness of a combination of strategies involving technetium pyrophosphate (PYP), cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, and endomyocardial biopsy for the diagnosis of ATTR-CMP.

Background The AHA Registry (American Heart Association COVID-19 Cardiovascular Disease Registry) captures detailed information on hospitalized patients with COVID-19. The registry, however, does not capture information on social determinants of health or long-term outcomes. Here we describe the linkage of the AHA Registry with external data sources, including fee-for-service (FFS) Medicare claims, to fill these gaps and assess the representativeness of linked registry patients to the broader Medicare FFS population hospitalized with COVID-19.

Article Synopsis
  • - The POLARIX trial found that pola-R-CHP offers better progression-free survival than R-CHOP for patients with untreated intermediate- to high-risk DLBCL.
  • - A survey of 174 clinicians, primarily from academic centers in the U.S., revealed that 70% would not switch to pola-R-CHP due to its limited PFS benefits and high costs.
  • - There was significant variation in how clinicians interpreted the trial results and their strategies for applying pola-R-CHP in practice.

Chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosives (CBRNEs) preparedness for sporting event mass gatherings: A systematic review of the literature.

Am J Disaster Med

August 2022

Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts; Division of Medical Toxicology, Department of Emergency Medicine, Brigham Health, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts.

Objective: Sporting events often constitute mass gatherings (MGs) featuring large crowds of spectators and participants. Our objective is to understand the current state of emergency preparedness for sporting events by examining past MG sporting events to evaluate mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery against chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive (CBRNE) events.

Methods: In accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, a systematic literature review was carried out among 10 literature databases.

  • Wild-caught fish can significantly improve the diet quality of billions if managed correctly, but nutritional aspects have often been overlooked in fisheries policies.
  • The concept of multispecies Maximum Nutrient Yield (mMNY) is proposed to optimize nutrient production while balancing catch levels and species vulnerability in fisheries.
  • Analysis indicates that enhancing nutrient yields, particularly for crucial vitamins like D, can support food security by integrating nutritional goals into existing fisheries management strategies.

Background: Understanding venous thromboembolism (VTE) recurrence risk is central to determining the appropriate treatment course. Whether this risk varies after discontinuing anticoagulation or overall by type of incident event (pulmonary embolism [PE] vs deep vein thrombosis [DVT]) and by the detailed location of the DVT needs further clarification.

Methods: In this population-based inception cohort of incident VTE cases with follow-up by electronic health record review, incident DVT was categorized as distal, popliteal, or iliofemoral.

Cigarette Smoking and Endometrial Cancer Risk: Observational and Mendelian Randomization Analyses.

Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev

September 2022

Nutrition and Metabolism Branch, International Agency for Research on Cancer, Lyon, France.

Background: Current epidemiologic evidence indicates that smoking is associated with a lower endometrial cancer risk. However, it is unknown if this association is causal or confounded. To further elucidate the role of smoking in endometrial cancer risk, we conducted complementary observational and Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses.

  • Black children have a lower incidence of perioperative stroke compared to White children following cardiac transplantation, with a 32% reduced odds.
  • In the first 6 months after a stroke, mortality rates are similar for both Black and White children, but Black children experience over three times higher mortality rates after 6 months.
  • The study highlights the need for targeted interventions to address racial disparities in care and outcomes for pediatric cardiac transplant recipients.

Electronic address:

Background: The amount of people affected by traffic-related air pollution and noise is continuously increasing, but limited research has been conducted on the association between these environmental exposures and functional brain connectivity in children.

Objective: This exploratory study aimed to analyze the associations between the exposure to traffic-related air pollution and noise during pregnancy and childhood, and functional brain connectivity amongst a wide-swath of brain areas in preadolescents from 9 to 12 years of age.

Methods: We used data of 2,197 children from the Generation R Study.

HEARTS in the Americas is the regional adaptation of the World Health Organization's Global Hearts Initiative, which will be the model for risk management for cardiovascular disease (CVD) in primary health care in the Region of the Americas by 2025. It has already been implemented in 21 countries and 1045 primary health care centers throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. It takes a public health and health systems approach to systematically introduce simplified interventions at the primary health care level and focuses on hypertension as a clinical entry point.

Background Preeclampsia is a major cause of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. Given its large public health burden, there is a need to identify modifiable factors that can be targeted for preeclampsia prevention. In this study, we examined whether a Mediterranean-style diet is protective for preeclampsia in a large cohort of racially and ethnically diverse, urban, low-income women.
